Corvettes at Carlisle: Meet the Original American Idol

Corvettes at Carlise: Meet the Original American Idol

I was checking out the strong lineup of 2012 Corvettes at the Kerbeck Corvette tent when I saw EX-122 sitting in the center, surrounded by her much younger siblings. The Corvette that appeared in the extravigant Motorama display at the Waldof Estoria in January 1953 was now under a tent at a fairgrounds in Pennsylvania. And she was just as beautiful today as she was to those who first saw the fiberglass 2-seater 58 years ago.

After doing a walk around the oldest Corvette and trying to soak in every detail, I remembered I was packing a camera. So here is the results of our celebrity photo shoot with the legend that started it all.

As I walked around the experimental concept car, two thoughts came to mind. First, I find it wholey appropriate the the oldest Corvette, built for a car show, is now being used by a dealer to help sell cars. I call that fullfilling one’s destiny. Secondly, it did cross my mind that EX-122 was in Carlisle, pA instead of Atlantic City,NJ and therefore should be safe from any damange Hurricane Irene dishes out.

Lingenfelter Collection Tour Popular with Cruisers!

In honor of the week of Woodward Dream Cruisin’, and in an effort to raise funds for the Open Hands Food Pantry of Royal Oak, Michigan, the Lingenfelter Collection held an open house last Friday, August 19.  Although not so well known as other Michigan based automotive collections, this assembly of automobiles is refreshing and simply wonderful.

We were told that there are 196 cars in the complete collection, although only about 130 were on hand.  But what an amazing 130 they were!  Spread out through three adjoining showrooms, we saw excellent examples of Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Vector, Camaro, Mustang, Bugatti, and numerous muscle and classic cars.  I took special interest in the modifications provided by both Lingenfelter and Callaway.

For me, the most special treat were the two examples of Reeves Callaway’s Speedsters.  However, the Bugatti Veyron and the Lambo Reventon (both valued in the millions) were certainly head turners, as well.

The collection is not open to the general public, so there is no posted admittance fee, as at a museum.  To get in, you have to be part of a group, using the collection as a background to raise funds for charity.  That said, if you get an opportunity to see this special collection, don’t miss out.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is held in mid-August each year. Countless automotive enthusiasts from around the globe converge on historic M-1 in metro Detroit to celebrate all things car and transportation related. What began as a fundraising event for a Ferndale baseball field has evolved into the world’s largest 1 day automotive event. Each year roughly 40,000 collector cars and 1.5 million people gather along the 16 mile stretch of road to relive years gone by when Woodward Avenue was the unofficial proving grounds for Detroit’s latest creations. Click past the jump to check out our Corvette pics from this year’s Dream Cruise.

The official date of the cruise this year was Saturday, August 20th, but eager cruisers start rolling in earnest a week (or more) before that. Traffic moves freely early in the week leading up to the cruise, but slows to a snail’s pace by midday on cruise day. Cars not on the road fill virtually every parking along the way. The sidewalks are shoulder to shoulder with car aficionados talking about, pointing at, or photographing the nearest piece of rolling artwork.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is probably the only place you’ll see a Ferrari followed by Labatt themed beer can car followed by a 69 GTO followed by boat and trailer converted for street driving which is followed by a C1 Corvette which is then followed by a lifted F-250. If it’s on wheels, you’re likely to see it on Woodward. Of course we’re partial Corvettes and they were present too in abundance this year. Cars from all 6 generations rolled up and down the avenue all weekend long and seemed way more prolific than any other make this year.

A late day batch of severe weather rolled through between 4:30 and 5pm. Even the severe storms, power outages, and downed trees couldn’t keep the cruisers away long. Once the weather broke and some of the mess was cleaned up Woodward once again filled up with collector cars until the authorities shut it down at the official end time of 9pm.

Couldn’t make this year? Then check out some of our pics from the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise below. Or peruse the WDC website for more info on the event. And we’ll see you out there next August!

Supercar Summit: Mercedes-Benz SLS Amg, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi…

Two days, two totally different driving experiences, two key questions. Can the new McLaren MP4-12C dethrone the Ferrari 458 Italia? And how do these two high flyers compare to the sports car establishment? True, it would have been nice to include the exciting new Lamborghini Aventador, and perhaps even the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, in this … (more)

[VIDEO] Over 40 Corvette Race Cars Rumble at the Corvette World Tribute

On Sunday, over 40 current and former Corvette race cars gathered at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for the Corvette World Tribute, a celebration of racing Corvettes as part of the Chevrolet’s 100 year anniversary. As the cars lined up to take a parade lap around the famous 4.08 mile circuit, youtube member HeyMark5 captured nearly three minutes of pure Corvette thunder as each of the corvettes sauntered past his camera and made their way onto the track.

The Corvette World Tribute was put on by our friends at the Registry of Corvette Race Cars. As we wait for an official recap of the event, you can see more pictures from Sunday’s Corvette World Tribute as well as pictures from the previous day’s ALMS race from dvandeentop on Photobucket.

[VIDEO] Corvette Racing Tech Transfer: Carbon Fiber Panels

During Sunday’s broadcast of the American Le Mans Series at the Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase at Road America, Corvette Racing’s Program Manager Doug Fehan delivered the latest Tech Transfer segment which centered on the Corvette’s carbon fiber panels.

Doug sets up the segment by talking about sibling rivalry and rubbing and racing on the racetrack while the video shows the two Corvette C6.Rs racing side-by-side as well as the infamous pit lane crash at last year’s 12 Hour’s of Sebring. Fehan states “We don’t mind if the kids get together once in a while because these carbon fiber fenders can take it.”

Following the segment, ABC Race Commentator and former Corvette Racing driver Johnny O’Connell laughs and said that he always looked at a crash on the track as job security for the pit crew. Although we can all laugh now at the self-deprecating humor of watching the two Corvette C6.Rs crash in the pits during 2010′s 12 Hours of Sebring, I am sure Fehan would actually prefer that the kids didn’t get together…
