Is a Hybrid in the Future for Corvette?

You have to give Chevrolet credit for not letting any grass grow under the wheels of its new Corvette Stingray.

The seventh-generation car is due to be on the streets with real live owners very soon, but that hasn’t stopped GM President Mark Reuss from dreaming about the Stingray’s future.

In an interview with the LA Times recently, Reuss admits that a hybrid Corvette isn’t just a pipe dream.

“I think it’s a very attractive idea, actually,” Reuss said. “I think it would be really fun to do, I think it would build capability inside our company and I think people would love it.”

Actually, an energy recapturing system is already being used on hybrid supercars like Ferrari’s LaFerrari and the McLaren P1.

The Ferrari actually gets 161 of its 923 total horsepower from a system known as a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), and the McLaren gets 176 of its 903 horsepower from a similar system.

The C7 already has gone super high-tech with fuel-saving ideas like direct-injection and cylinder deactivation, so it’s not hard to imagine the Corvette’s super-smart engineers going to the next level and taking advantage of a KERS system in the future, as they would be able to boost power and efficiency at the same time.

“It’s exciting stuff, I mean it is,” Reuss said. “It’s cool.”

[VIDEO] C5 Corvette Pulled From a New Orleans Bayou

Down in the Bayou definitely takes on a new meaning for this Corvette.

New Orleans Police pulled the black C5 hardtop (possibly a 1999 or 2000 model) out of Bayou St. John early Wednesday morning.

WVUE Channel 8 in New Orleans showed live video of the Corvette – minus at least its left front fender and rear bumper, with the left rear tire dangling – being pulled out of the water about 7:45 a.m. today.

Police found no one in the car, but in a noon statement said they have made contact with the driver, though they did not release his name. They did say he was alone in the Corvette.

Witnesses reported seeing a man climb out of the water shortly after the accident, which happened around 4 a.m. Recovery efforts began at 5:30 a.m., and the northbound lanes of Wisner Boulevard between Esplanade and Desaix were closed until 8:55 a.m.

NOPD is continuing its investigation and won’t say how or why the car made its way into the water.

[PICS] Corvette Museum Unveils Hall of Fame Corvettes for Johnny O'Connell and Wil Cooksey

The National Corvette Museum unveiled two special Hall of Fame Corvette Stingrays for two members of the 2013 HOF class. Former Corvette Racing driver Johnny O’Connell and former Bowling Green Plant Manager Wil Cooksey had their commemorative Corvette Stingray’s revealed at a special ceremony Thursday during the Museum’s 19th annual Labor Day Anniversary celebration.

Johnny O’Connell went first and under the special Stingray logo’d cover was a 2014 Cyber Gray Corvette Stingray. The doors have the No. 3 decals like we’ve seen previously on the Ron Fellows and Andy Pilgrim’s HOF cars. On the bottom of the doors in Velocity Yellow is a “TEAM CORVETTE” graphic with the new C7 style Jake. On the hood, there is a black stinger and then a new reversed-color Jake done in Cyber Gray graphics. Inside the Corvette, Johnny’s distinctive helmet design and his signature are embroidered on the headrests. A special dash plaque has the Corvette Racing name with a Jake logo. The Corvette was also outfitted with a “STINGRAY” banner on the windshield, yellow calipers and another Black/Yellow Jake under the hood.

Wil Cooksey’s commemorative Corvette Stingray mirrors the special 2008 427 Limited Edition Z06 that were signed and numbered 1 through 505 by Cooksey inside the center console. His Corvette Stingray is Crystal Red Metallic with a Black Stinger hood graphic and chrome Z51 wheels. Corvette Product Marketing Manager Harlan Charles said there are some aspects of the car that they can’t yet disclose. As Cookey’s previous C6 427 Limited Edition was a Z06, could it be possible that there is something more under the hood than the regular production 6.2L LT1? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Check out the two special Corvette Stingrays in this gallery of photos submitted by CS who was at the event:
