Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2011: Corvette Sales Bring in $2.5 Million

The 4th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector car auction in Las Vegas concluded Saturday night with 46 Corvettes crossing the auction block over the 3-day sale. The Sales for Corvettes totaled $2,549,250 which includes the 10% buyer’s commission. Check out the top sellers of the auction as well as the full results following the jump.

The top Corvette sale of the three day auction came on Saturday night. Lot #673.2 was a 1967 Corvette Roadster powered by the L71 427/435hp with a 4-speed transmission. Completely and correctly restored with matching numbers and Tank Sticker documentation, the Yellow/Black roadster was originally an Arizona car with only three previous owners. Selling price including the buyers commission was $150,700.

The #2 sale of the auction was also a 1967 Corvette. Lot #677 was a 1967 custom resto-mod Corvette coupe that one of the cars we previewed last week. Built on an Art Morrison chassis and a body by Downs Industries, the Gray Metallic coupe is powered by an LS2 V8. The custom Corvette sold Saturday for $121,000 including buyers commission.

There did appear to be some good buys over the weekend with several Corvettes selling under $10,000. One Corvette, Lot #601 was a 1986 Coupe with 79,400 actual miles. The all-original Medium Gray Corvette changed hands for a mere $5,500 including buyers commission.

Biden Misses His 1967 Green Corvette

There’s nothing worse than having a thrilling ride and not being able to drive it. Take Vice President Joe Biden for example – a proud owner of his beloved 1967 green Corvette.

“The Secret Service won’t let me drive it. I’m not allowed to drive anything. It’s the one thing I hate about this job. I’m serious,” says Biden in a recent Car and Driver Magazine interview.

As the son of a car salesman who sold Chryslers and Fords, Biden has always shared a passion for vehicles. In fact, he remarked about test-driving his brother’s 556-hp Cadillac.

“He brought it down for me to eat my heart out,” said Biden. “So I got in. I have a driveway that’s about 1,700 feet long. I knew the Secret Service wouldn’t let me drive it outside. So I jumped on that sucker and laid rubber.  A great feeling…”

Sounds like our kind of guy.

Historic Cars for a Historic Landmark

Ken Behrens is proud of his 1930 Model “A” Ford. When the vintage automobile rolled off the production line over 80 years ago you could drive one home for just over $500. But the ride would be a bumpy one.

Spongebob Corvette

Spongebob VetteWho lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Corvette…?

Well, not really. But the owner of this ’94 Corvette had all the right intentions. Upon purchasing this original Dark Red Metallic ride, already in dire need of a paint job, the owner decided to simply combine his joys of ‘Vette driving with the cartoon residents of Bikini Bottom.

And he claims, “Definitely an eye catcher. Lots of compliments wherever it goes.”

Though we’ll let you form your own opinion on this one…

Inside Line: C7 Corvette to be Offered with a 7-Speed Manual Gearbox

[VIDEO] Corvette Racing Tech Transfer: Headlights

It seems like every time we turn around, some other site has an “inside source” that is spilling the beans on the next-generation Corvette. We’ve heard rumors and speculation that the 2014 Corvette will be powered by a turbo, or that it will be mid-engined, or it will have all-wheel drive. Whatever the case, it appears that everyone is talking within the C7 program as yet another “inside source” has come forward to leak new details on the development of the C7.

The latest rumor comes from InsideLine.com whose “trusted source” is telling them that the 2014 C7 Corvette will be available in a seven-speed manual transmission.

Having that additional gear could be seen as a way to increase fuel-efficiency as an overdrive gear, but it might also allow Chevy engineers to tighten up the lower gears for improved performance.

In addition to the transmission, Inside Line’s source is saying that the upcoming GEN-V small block V8 that will power the new Corvette will continue with the 16-valve pushrod architecture and will see the addition of fuel-saving technologies like direct injection and a variable valve lift system.

The addition of a seven-speed transmission for the Corvette comes on the heals of the announcement from Porsche earlier this month that it will offer a seven-speed manual gearbox and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission on the 2012 911.

Transmission rumors for the C7 Corvette date back to October 2007 when the details of the GM-UAW agreement listed upcoming projects at all the GM factories. One in particular was this from the Toledo, OH transmission plant which read “RWD DCT for NG Corvette will be allocated (2012)”. The DCT typically refers to the dual clutch transmissions and 2012 was the previously the expected model year that the C7 would debut.
