NY Gov. Cuomo, Car Enthusiast

Gov. Andrew CuomoLast week, car enthusiasts of all sorts meandered through a collection of vintage vehicles at the 2nd annual Nassau County’s car show.

Anonymous to the crowds, one individual pulled in and parked his 1975 Corvette amongst others. It wasn’t until a small entourage of photographers and plain-clothed state troopers made it clear of his notoriety – New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

As a car-enthusiast since his early teenage years working at a gas station, he walked through the rows of vehicles and exclaimed, “I’m having a ball.”

He all but apologized about his ride, admitting that his deep sky-blue 1975 model that he bought for $4,750 while in college was no prize-winner. “I use it — it’s not a show car by any means,” he said. “I leave it in a parking lot, so the car isn’t as clean as these cars. It’s far from perfect.”

According to his office, this was Cuomo’s first gubernatorial car cruise. Instead of posing for pictures then to be whisked away, Cuomo stayed awhile and engaged in conversations, proving his auto-buff smarts.

“It’d be cooler if he’d lower my taxes. But, yeah, it’s pretty cool,” said an attendee.

Article and Photos contributed by Steve Burns

A couple months back we had the opportunity to tour the immense car collection of Ken Lingenfelter, owner of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering. The diverse collection contains about 150 stunning muscle cars, exotics, classics, as well as several of LPE’s latest creations. No car collection is complete without a healthy dose of America’s sports car, and this one is no different. Roughly 40% of the grouping consists of Corvettes including some very rare ones. Check out some photos from our visit after the break.

The Lingenfelter Collection resides in a rather nondescript 40,000 square foot house of horsepower. The interior is relatively simple with white walls and a painted floor. A few photos and pictures hang on the walls and some banners and signs drop down from the ceiling. The focus here is clearly the cars (as it should be). The building is split into 3 sections. One section is for the exotics including a Bugatti Veyron, about 10 Ferrari’s (including an Enzo), several Lambo’s (including a Reventon), a Mercedes SLR McLaren, and a Porsche Carrera GT among several others. The muscle car room holds old Firebirds, Camaros, a Hemi Challenger, AAR Cuda, Novas, Mustangs, and pretty much 1 of every muscle car you can think of. There’s even a NHRA Funny Car in there.

Last, but definitely not least, is the Corvette room. The collection has corvettes from every era and enough zing to make Zora blush. Some of the highlights include:

In addition to all of these there are numerous Lingenfelter and Specter Werkes Corvettes. In addition to the C12 above, there about 6 or 7 other Callaway cars in there as well. Don’t forget the fuelie C1’s and big block C2’s and C3’s in there too. There are just way too many cool cars in there to talk about here so check out some of our photos below.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo attended a Corvette show Sunday in East Meadow, N.Y., driving his 1975 Bright Blue Corvette that he bought in college for $4,750.

“I use it — it’s not a show car by any means,” Cuomo said. “I leave it in a parking lot, so the car isn’t as clean as these cars. It’s far from perfect.”

Cuomo said he spent the day before the show changing his oil and cleaning up the car and was a bit sore from the work.

“I’m all sore today,” he told the crowd. “I’m all cramped from moving around the car. But it is a great passion. It’s a great hobby.”

Proof that Corvettes can trump politics, Governor Cuomo (D) parked his Stingray next to gold 1969 Corvette, owned by Nassau County executive Edward Mangano (R), and the two shared tips on cleaning grime from the engine manifold. For the record, the Governor prefers a toothbrush.

ALMS: Corvette Racing Laguna Seca qualifying report

Corvette RacingThe lap count down qualification for ModSpace American Le Mans Series Monterey was held this past weekend, and Corvette Racing came in with a vengeance, especially Gavin.

Within the last (and quickest) lap, driver Gavin took the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R from sixth to second on the GT grid. “I knew that the car had it in it. I just needed to put a lap together without any traffic or sand on the track,” said Gavin. “It all seemed to come together on that last lap."

Corvette Racing’s fastest laps:

Oliver Gavin (ninth lap): 1:23.124 at 96.925 mph

Olivier Beretta (sixth lap): 1:23.566 at 96.412 mph

The lap winner, however, went to BMW M3 GT driver Joey Hand who clocked in 1:22.226 at 97.984 mph.

"It’s super close with everyone except Hand’s BMW, and we’re in with a fighting chance," Gavin added. "Six hours at Laguna Seca is a long race, and I know that Corvette Racing will make the right calls and we’ll be battling to keep ourselves in the championship."
