Bruce Ricks’ 1954 Chevy Ragtop

In the early ’50s, GM’s designers seemed to be stuck in the ’40s when it came to high cowls and vestigial rear fender shapes stamped into the quarter-panels of their progeny.

Registration is Open for 2012 Corvettes at Carlisle

Registration is Open for 2012 Corvettes at Carlisle

Our Carlisle Events email newsletter arrived last week reminding us that registration for this year’s Corvettes at Carlisle is already open. The show takes place August 24th – 26th. You can register a number of ways, but online is the easiest. Sign up for the “Gate-N-Go” option prior to July 23rd and take advantage of a $10 discount off of the regular price. Also, for a limited time you can get a 50% discount off entry to the Carlisle GM Nationals with your Corvettes at Carlisle registration.

Like always, the weekend will be packed full of activities including the:

  • Downtown parade
  • NCRS gallery
  • C5 and C6 diagnostic seminars
  • Callaway Reunion / display
  • 1962 Reunion
  • Autocross
  • Burnout contest
  • Sunday Corvette Giveaway

In addition to the above we look forward to wandering the Fun Field and checking out all the cars for sale in the car corral. Friday there will be a special Celebrity Choice parade to salute the award winners who didn’t get their due last year thanks to hurricane Irene. And, of course, there’s still the Miss Corvettes at Carlisle contest on Saturday afternoon.

Our friends at AllVette have partnered with Corvettes at Carlisle for the second year in a row to provide the annual Giveaway Corvette. We hear that this year’s Corvette will be one of the NICEST Corvettes ever offered at Corvettes at Carlisle. It will be given away on Sunday, August 26, as the weekend event wraps-up.

Returning this year are the Team Chevy vehicle test drives. Just hop on a shuttle to the Carlisle Expo Center 1 block outside Gate 3 and take a turn behind the wheel of one of GM’s latest offerings. We’ll be there to test out a few rides ourselves and to take advantage of the free ice cream that’ll be available. There are countless other things going on throughout the weekend and you can check them all out on the Corvettes at Carlisle website.

This year’s Corvettes at Carlisle takes place August 24th – 26th at the Carlisle fairgrounds in Carlisle, PA. Admission at the gate is $14 per day or you can grab a 4-day pass for $40. The countdown is now at less than 150 days!

Incentives on New Corvettes Get Even Better!

Look at ’em go!

Incentives from the factory on remaining 2011 Corvettes and on 2012 Corvettes were good last month.  In fact, they were so good that customers responded by purchasing and leasing more Corvettes in March than they have any month since last spring!  Chevrolet‘s response in April is to keep those incentives coming.  Nothing was eliminated from last month’s programs.

In fact, Chevy has made purchasing a 2011 or 2012 Corvette even easier for those who get the General Motors Employee Discount.  That discount will help GM employees and retirees by an additional $1000.  Please note, however, that the extra $1000 does not apply to leases.

Check below for a summary of the current programs.  If you have any questions, please let us know at 313-532-2571, or just comment below.

What hasn’t changed on offers for 2011 MY Corvettes:

$4000 Customer Cash or 0% Financing for up to 72 Months
$3000 Retention Program (by mailing or in manifest)

$2000 Competitive Lease Program for Non-GM Lessees (not compatible with Retention or Conquest programs)
ZR1 does not receive any Employee Purchase Allowance

What hasn’t changed on offers for 2012 MY Corvettes:

ProTeam Corvette’s Terry Michaelis and the 1962 Style Corvette

One of the features at last month’s Amelia Island Concours D’elegance was a class made up exclusively of Corvette styling cars. Included in the chic, invitation-only collection of cars was this Firemist Gold 1962 Corvette created under GM Shop Order #10224. It is believed that this one-off was an exercise to produce a 50th Anniversary package to celebrate Chevrolet’s golden anniversary.

The styling exercise was completed on January 16th, 1962. Inspections have found the shop order number #10224 present on several of the vehicle’s components. Like many hip-hop and rap artists today, this car also features a gold plated grill. There’s also a special styling shop order tag mounted on the firewall. In 2010, prior to new paint, interior and top, our friends at ProTeam Corvette (http://www.proteam-corvette.com/cars/1068A.htm) performed some CSI work and found evidence of old Firemist Gold paint as well as signs of a gold or tan interior. Hence, their belief that it was an attempt at a 50th anniversary package.

The car is equipped with the numbers matching 300hp 327ci engine mated to a 4-speed transmission. Other options include leather interior, 3.36 rear end, Wonderbar radio, visors, windshield washers, courtesy light, heater, and white stripe tires.

At the Amelia Island Concours, it participated in the road tour and then was presented on show day alongside special Corvettes built for Bunkie Knudson and Harley Earl, a Scaglietti-bodied Corvette, and the Mako Shark. Numerous other significant styling cars were present as well. We first came across this car at last year’s Eyes on Design show in Dearborn, Michigan. It looks even better in person than it does in the photos below.

[VIDEO] Family Awarded $3.4 Million in Lawsuit against GM for a 2005 Corvette Fire

General Motors plans to appeal a decision by a California jury that awarded $3.4 million to a California family.

The settlement came as part of a lawsuit against GM over a defective telescoping steering column in a 2005 Corvette belonging to Patti Boekamp.

“Two hours after my wife came home and parked the car in the garage, the car caught fire and took the 5,300-square-foot house with it,” her husband, Herbert Boekamp, said.

Also lost in the January 16, 2010 fire was a 1962 Corvette.

Fortunately, the family escaped unharmed, despite the fact that several hard-wired smoke alarms didn’t work because the fire burned the circuits. Herbert Boekamp was awakened by the smell of smoke.

Once they had exited the burning house, Mr. Boekamp noticed a trail of gasoline that leaked out of the garage.

“When the car melted down, the gas rolled out of the garage and caught the outside of the home on fire; that was the first clue that it was the car,” he said.

The Boekamps can’t rebuild the house until the legal issues are resolved. A judgment will be entered against GM on Monday, and the automaker has indicated it will appeal within the 60 days allotted to do so.

Jay Leno and a C1 Corvette Featured in New Burger King Commercial

Jay Leno and a C1 Corvette Featured in New Burger King Commercial

We all know Jay Leno loves cars, so our first thought when we saw his new commercial for Burger King wasn’t about the new menu. It was our concern that ketchup and mustard – not to mention barbecue sauce – might somehow get on that lovely C1 Corvette he was driving in the commercial.

In case you haven’t seen the commercial, Leno is one of several big-name stars who are helping Burger King with the unveiling of its new menu items.

In the commercial, Leno uses the front counter as if it were a drive-thru window, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he just drove a Corvette through the lobby of a restaurant. The manager commends Leno for his nice-running Corvette, then tells the talk show host that the store has a real drive-thru (outside). Leno just shrugs off the suggestion, and the commercial ends with the new slogan – “Exciting Things Are Happening at Burger King.”

By the way, Burger King is touting the fact that it has added smoothies, blended coffees, chicken tenders, and a garden chicken salad to its menu in an attempt to regain ground lost at the hands of rivals McDonald’s and Wendy’s.

We’re not sure how effective the commercial will be, but we do have to admit it was nice to see a slick Corvette used to promote their new food.

Check out the new commerical on Burger King’s YouTube channel.
