[VIDEO] Drag Race Battles with a Corvette ZR1 Hennessey vs 1200 hp Twin Turbo Jeep SRT-8

We’re not sure what to make of these three races on Dragtimes featuring a Corvette ZR1, a couple of Mercedes, a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, and a Porsche 911 TurboS.

In the first race, the two Mercedes square off with the expected results, the E63 AMG tuned by Evotech with 730-hp leaving the stock S65 V12 AMG with 612-hp in its dust. The E63 does the quarter-mile in 12.808 seconds (197.91 kmh) vs. 13.141 seconds and 189.67 kmh for the S65. In the mile, the E63 runs 29.902 seconds (289.15 kmh) while the S65 does 31.259 seconds at 276.71kmh.

That’s when the action gets interesting. We’re not sure what is up in the second matchup.

The Porsche (with only 530-hp) somehow makes up for its lack of horses and manages to whip the Jeep (1200-hp 7.2 liter twin-turbocharged V8). Times are 11.124 seconds (205.94 kmh) for the 911 in the quarter and 28.178 seconds (286.16kmh) in the mile vs. 13.782 seconds (165.66 kmh) and 28.420 seconds (281.19 kmh) for the Jeep.

We know what you are thinking: based on that race, this should be an easy win for the ZR1 (prepared by Hennessey Performance and rated at 760-hp) over the Jeep, but hold on a minute. Was the Jeep driver just sandbagging against the Porsche? He jumps out quickly and blows the ZR1 away in the quarter, racing to a time of 11.732 seconds at 163.78 kmh over the Chevy’s time of 13.860 seconds at 184.52 kmh.

But then the Jeep apparently runs into mechanical problems and, with its emergency flashers going, limps to a pitiful time in the mile of 47.659 seconds at 89.93 kmh, while the ZR1 finishes at 31.134 seconds at 292.20 kmh.

All this action did take place on a wet track, it should be noted.

But the results leave us wondering just what was going on with the driving and the cars. This doesn’t seem to be a fair showing for any of the vehicles. Maybe a rematch is in order.

2012 Corvettes at Canterbury Show

DJ Race Canterbury Show 079

I attended the Corvettes at Canterbury Show in mid-June, and had a great time, as I have had so many times before.  GMC Corvette Set, sponsors of this show, clearly put much time and effort into this event every year, and they are to be commended for it.

I am pretty sure it was a first for this meet, but they provided a separate Show ‘n Shine type competition for their own club members this year.  Since I was competing myself for prizes in the modified C6 class with a Torch Red Callaway Corvette, I spent much of the morning trying to get my car detailed for a First Place finish.

After I walked through the entire field of competition of those who had paid the entry fee, and after lunch, I reviewed all the club member cars, seeking my selection for winner of People’s Choice Award.  My approach was to find a car that spoke to my inner Corvette.  I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but I hoped I’d recognize it when I saw it.

And then I saw this 1967 Corvette Sting Ray.  I loved the way it looked!  Although it was under the shade of a massive tree, the Rally Red paint was bright and lustrous.  The wheel openings in the fenders were clearly modified to give the car an aggressive look.  Every piece of chrome was beautiful.  The look was awesome.

While I was engaged in enjoying it, the owner approached me, to share his delight with me about the car, and to tell me the amazing story behind it.  John & Kathy Mollo love this car – enough to have bought it twice!

Originally, the car was painted Sunfire Yellow, with a Black Stinger on the hood.  They bought it in Columbus, Ohio in 1996, but sold it four years later to a man from Atlanta, Georgia.  Some seven years after that, John was in Atlanta, and couldn’t resist the urge to check on his baby.  It turns out that the newer owner was looking to sell it, and John ended up buying the car again.

Since then, the suspension has been lowered, the mini-flares were created over the wheels, American Racing Wheels have been added, and the car has been bathed in 6 coats of Rally Red and 5 coats of clear (the secret of all that lustre)!

The original 427 engine had been destroyed many years ago, but the car now relies on adequate (OK, more than adequate) power from a 454 crate engine with 425 horses!

I wasn’t the only one to vote for this pretty car, either.  At the end of the day, it did take home the People’s Choice Award.  Congratulations to John & Kathy for a fine job, a beautiful car, and favoring me with the time to share their great story!

Corvette Racing at Lime Rock: Back to Business at the Bullring

Corvette Racing at Lime Rock: Back to Business at the Bullring

American Le Mans Series Returns to Series’ Shortest Track for Rough-and-Tumble Fourth Round

LAKEVILLE, Conn. – With the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the rearview mirror, Corvette Racing is now driving for the American Le Mans Series GT championship. The series’ fourth round, the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix, will be contested on Saturday, July 7, in the tight confines of Lime Rock Park. This 1.5-mile circuit in the Connecticut countryside is road racing’s equivalent of a short-track bullring – albeit with more ups and downs than the stock market.

With the exception of the Esses and a pair of chicanes, all of the corners at Lime Rock Park are right-hand turns – a layout that affects both setups and attitudes. Several of Corvette Racing’s key team members began their racing careers on bullrings, and they bring that hard-edged experience to Lime Rock.

Long before team manager Gary Pratt was winning titles in Le Mans, he was racing late-model stock cars on short-tracks in Michigan and Ohio. Lessons learned there still apply today.

“Lime Rock is basically a clockwise oval track, so we try to maximize right-side weight because there are so few left-hand corners,” Pratt explained. “The racing on short-track ovals is usually rough-and-tumble, and that’s the way it is at Lime Rock.”

Lime Rock Park has not been kind to Corvette Racing recently. Hard contact took out the No. 3 Corvette C6.R in 2010, and last year both Corvettes were caught up in a chain-reaction accident early in the race that relegated them to ninth and 10th at the checkered flag.

“We need to be faster at Lime Rock so we can qualify up front and not have to contend with traffic at the beginning of the race,” Pratt said. “When you’re at the back of the line and somebody makes a mistake, it’s just a domino effect. I’m optimistic that with the wider track, higher downforce, and other improvements that we’ve made in the Corvettes, we can qualify higher and not get stuck in traffic.

“If we do encounter traffic, we need to be smart on the radio and tell our drivers to leave some room to avoid accidents. The time to start racing hard is after the final pit stops. Until then it’s risky to run nose-to-tail in a pack of cars.”

Dan Binks, crew chief for the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R, earned his racing stripes running in NASCAR circles with the likes of Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch. “You always look forward to races at short tracks like Martinsville and South Boston because the gloves are off,” said Binks. “You race as hard as you can, and hopefully you’re around for the green-white-checker at the end.”

“At Le Mans you conserve a little, do the best job you can without taking too many chances – Lime Rock is the total opposite,” Binks added with a laugh. “You have to get as much as you can in that kind of racing, and hopefully you’re on the giving side instead of the receiving side. Two years in a row, we’ve been on the receiving end, so I’m hoping that our cars are fast enough this year that we’ll be ahead of the pushing and shoving.”

Going into the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix, Corvette drivers Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner lead the GT drivers standings in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R by seven points on the strength of back-to-back wins in Long Beach and Laguna Seca. Teammates Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen (who will make his milestone 100th ALMS start at Lime Rock) are third in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R, 11 points back. Chevrolet leads the manufacturer championship over BMW, Ferrari, and Porsche, and Corvette Racing is first in the team standings. When the dust finally settles at Lime Rock, Corvette Racing is aiming to remain on top.

The American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix will start at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 7, and will be broadcast same day on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. ET. Live coverage is available starting at 2:45 p.m. ET on ESPN3.

Top 13 American Muscle Cars for Independence Day

I made a big mistake last Friday. While preparing a feature on the Top 10 American Muscle Cars ever built in honor of Independence Day, A I solicited the rest of the Motor Trend staff for their opinions on what Detroit iron belonged on this list.
