2011 Corvettes At Carlisle

Always one of the mammoth Corvette events in the United States, Corvettes at Carlisle opens Friday with an estimated 5000 Corvettes, hundreds of vendors, and tons of activities, designed to please one and all!  And this year, the weather should be perfect!!!!

Some of the special features at this year’s edition of Corvettes at Carlisle are:

Celebration of the 1963 Corvette, also known as the first of the second generation of the Corvette, a.k.a. the first Midyear Corvette.

A unique opportunity to obtain autographs from many of your favorite Corvette celebrities, including Lance Miller, Randy Leffingwell, Reeves Callaway, Harlan Charles, Kirk Bennion, Tadge Juechter, Dave Tatman, and many more.  This is offered on Friday 12:30-1:30 and Saturday at 10:30.

Also on Saturday, at 3PM, Reeves Callaway, the man behind Callaway Cars, will be meeting and greeting his fans at the Callaway tent in the Manufacturer’s Midway.

This year’s event also offers three giveaways, including a low mileage 1998 Corvette Coupe.  Prize winners will be announced on Sunday afternoon.

Readers of this blog may recall that the 2011 edition of the Woodward Dream Cruise, held just north of Detroit, was threatened by storms much of the day, and was actually smitten by serious thunderstorms before the afternoon was even over.

This year, the event was blessed by awesome weather, probably the best ever in the dozen or so iterations of the event.  The sky was baby blue, the clouds were cumulus, the temperature was comfortable, and there was a pleasant light breeze for much of the day.

As a result, with numbers from the Detroit Free Press, some 40,000 cars came to congregate and parade.  The crowd was estimated at 1.3 million.

I spent most of my day with America’s Corvette Club just north of 16 Mile Road.  We rented a property there, and had thousands of cars to enjoy as they zoomed by in the morning, and inched by bumper-to-bumper in the afternoon.

I brought a Torch Red 2011 Callaway Grand Sport Convertible for the event, a vehicle you can see near the curb in some of these pics.
