Prizes, speakers and test drives headline Matick’s Open House!

Corvettes are rolling in to our George Matick Chevrolet faster than the veggie dip is disappearing. Former Chevy engineer (now retired) Charles Beckham parked his sleek black beauty, and then shared that he’s had more than a dozen over the years. “This is a nice event,” he noted, while looking at various ‘Vettes and chatting with other connoisseurs. “The design of a ‘Vette is really art,” he explained, thinking back to his days as an engineer for GM.

Meanwhile, Mike Yaramus of Woodhaven, who bought a 1995 Corvette from Matick, reports that his ‘Vette had around 10,000 miles on it when he purchased it, and now over 310,000 memorable miles.

“If you’re going to have one, you’ve got to drive it,” said Larry Courtney of Warren, MI, while checking out the “sooobad” super-charged Callaway. Courtney is Michigan captain for the 2014 Corvette Caravan, which heads to Bowling Green next August. “I drive ours more than he does,” adds Courtney’s wife, Verna. The Courtneys are here with their USA flag-wrapped Corvette (Matick is one of the sponsors of this truly patriotic vehicle).

While patrons ogled ‘Vettes and enjoyed Plum Market goodies, Matick Chevy’s Ryan Esler announced the first winner of the Open House — Dan Watts of Novi, MI. Watts, owner of a 2005 ‘Vette convertible, will take home a Danny Kellermeyer D.J. Race Enterprise T-shirt and a Corvette cleaning kit. The next winner was Howard Rundell, who will now sport a new Corvette hat. Meanwhile, Howard Hoover won a prize for having more Corvettes than anyone else who was attending the Danny Kellermeyer presentation part of the Open House. Hoover has owned 11 ‘Vettes in his life. Other attendeed that evening owned up to 19, but weren’t present for this particular drawing. Way to hang in there, Howard!

[VIDEO] Chevrolet's Harlan Charles Celebrates the C5 Corvette Generation

As Chevrolet looks back at 60 years of Corvettes, the focus today is the C5 generation that started in 1997 and ended in 2004. Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles filmed this tribute to the 5th gen Corvette from the Corvette Time Line at Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise last month.

The C5 generation was a complete reinvention of the Corvette that continued the tradition of refinement and helped usher the American sports car onto the world stage. One of the big deals in the design for the C5 Corvette was the return of an actual trunk which disappeared from Corvettes after 1962. Harlan says by moving the transmission to the rear and splitting the gas tanks behind the seats, it gave the C5 Corvette much needed cargo space which allowed the car to serve as a daily driver as well as making it great for road trips.

Technology was still a huge emphasis and we saw the C5 generation Corvettes equipped with active handling, stability control, a heads up display and all Corvettes were introduced with run-flat tires. All Corvettes were built with hydro-formed steel frame that was very strong and helped lower the overall weight while reducing the number of parts needed to assemble.

The C5 Corvette marked the return of factory racing with Corvette. Corvette Racing began racing the C5-R and the team won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times and the ALMS Manufacturers championship 4 times during the era. Chevy marked the success of the Corvette Racing team by offering the 2004 Commemorative Edition.

In 2003, Corvette celebrated its 50th Anniversary and the occasion was marked with a special 50th Anniversary package.

Finally, the C5 Corvette would mark the return of the Z06 performance model. Introduced in 2001, the Corvette Z06 featured the 385-horsepower LS6 and when the generation came to a close in 2004, the Z06 was rated at 405 horsepower.

Preservation Expert Eric Gill to Lead Restoration of Neil Armstrong’s 1967 Corvette

When is a car more than just a car?

How about when it once belonged to the first man who walked on the moon?

That’s right, a 1967 Corvette once owned by Neil Armstrong – known for his “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” – is on its way back to being carefully restored, thanks to new owner Joe Crosby.
Crosby has commissioned a team of experts, led by respected automobile preservation activist Eric Gill, to lead the project, which could take years because they want the job done right since its owner was such an important part of world history.

“Ultimately, this will help humanize one of America’s iconic heroes,” Gill said. “Maybe someday a schoolchild will look at the car and realize Neil Armstrong was a real guy, like his or her dad. While a child can aspire to a hero – larger than life – that hero is a real person, so isn’t that a better goal, to humanize this inanimate artifact?”

Like so many of his fellow space travelers, Armstrong was a fan of the Corvette, buying the 1967 427, from Jim Rathmann Chevrolet for $1. He drove it most of the year before trading it back in to Rathmann for a 1968 Corvette.

The second owner, who prefers to remain anonymous, bought the car the very next day and kept it for 31 years before selling it to Crosby in February.

No word on what price Crosby paid, but he did say the seller took the money and bought a new Corvette.

Gill is carefully documenting the restoration process with video and still photography. “Because we are recording this digitally, we’re not doing anything to hide or fool,” he said. “The digital record of the car, you’ll be able to see the before, during, and end result.”

Gill believes the car will inspire future generations of astronauts. “To do this properly, you’re talking about hundreds of hours for what is probably 12 linear feet,” he said. “What is the return? The payback is huge because future generations will see this as an artifact found.”

Armstrong, who passed away earlier this summer, still remembered the 1967 Corvette, according to Jack Legere, a member of the Cape Kennedy Corvette Club, who just happened to run into Armstrong during an April visit to the Space Center.

“I asked Mr. Armstrong, ‘I understand you used to own a 1967 Corvette,’ ” Legere recalled. “He turned around and looked at me and said, ‘The blue one?’ I was hoping he would answer that way.

“I answered him back, ‘Yes, sir.’ He asked me if I owned it, and I told him no but I knew the guy that does own it. ‘Where’s the car,’ he asked me. I told him it was here on Merritt Island and he flashed a big smile, a big toothy smile.”

It’s too bad that Mr. Armstrong won’t get to see the final result.

Top Speed Website Claims C7 Will Have Air-Conditioned Seats

Air Conditioned Seat Controls
Air Conditioned Seat Controls

These are not photographs, but they are clearly drawings taken from either photographs or someone’s extremely detailed photographic memory.

One pic is a schematic of the C7 Corvette seat, showing four ports for cooling to enter the seat cushion.  The other pic shows the seat heating & cooling controls.

Critics have long lambasted Corvette seats.  This should help alleviate the scorn!

Less clear, but also included in this brief article, is a photo of the proposed Corvette engine, again in a styling of a photo.

Top Speed also has a brief video entitled, “Corvette C7 Visualization.”  Take a look, but I think this is very homogenized, and I seriously don’t think the tail lights could possibly look like this.

As we get closer to “the day,” do you think we’re getting any better of an idea of what she will be like?

Chevy Sonic Engineer John Buttermore Repeats SCCA National Championship

Now make that the 2 –time defending National Champion. Buttermore recently piloted his Corvette to his 2nd consecutive Touring 1 National Championship during the SCCA runoffs at Road America.

Prior to winning his titles, Buttermore claimed second and third place honors at the runoffs.

Buttermore averaged 99.505mph while leading all 13 laps over the Corvette-heavy field.

Reflecting on his win Buttermore said “It was pretty smooth…Everything went according to the plan that we had. We wanted to get out and see if we could break the draft and get away…I ran four or five laps at 100 percent and then put it back to 90 percent and cruised with it.”

Congrats John!
