Women can be passionate about cars, too.

Take Kristi Zick of Kindred, North Dakota, for example.

She grew up watching her dad, Roger Langlie, work as crew chief for her uncle’s Super Comp dragster team at a track. That’s the same track where she met her husband, Ryan, after first falling in love with his black Camaro.

Kristi’s infatuation with cars began thanks to her father, who helped her fix up a 1986 Corvette, using the car to teach her the basics about things like changing oil and minor repairs.

They even bought a 1993 Corvette together in April 2002, but sadly Roger succumbed to cancer just a few months later so they didn’t have much time to work on the car together.

“We were planning on sharing it,” Kristi says. “It didn’t work out that way. … It’s nice now, because every time I see it or every time I drive it, it reminds me of him. It’s something we loved to do together.

“I’d say my dad is my heart and soul when it comes to cars,” she says. “To be able to carry out that part of him, it means a lot to me.”

Since his death, she joined the Northern Lights Corvette Club in honor of her father and has even been known to drag race the ’Vette.

“Racing to me, it’s such an adrenaline rush. It’s something not everybody does, which is fun for me,” she says.

She plans to pass on her love for cars to her two young sons and says if they do happen to enjoy her passion, “that would be a great family thing for us to do as they get older,” she says.

Another Fargo, North Dakota woman, Tanya Robideau, also traces her love of cars to her father, Paul Hornbacher, as she watched him fix up hot rods from the 1930s – bringing them from a bucket of rust to a shiny classic that looked like it just came out of the showroom.

Her love for cars has even turned into a business that she and her husband operate, Dakota Chassis Work that specializes in frame repair. Tanya also does pinstriping not just on cars but once even on a tricycle and refrigerator.

They’re a true car family as they own a 1992 Corvette that her husband won. Tanya once owned a 1964 Ford Galaxy 500, and her father surprised her mom with a 1968 Camaro SS on their anniversary last year. There’s a third generation on the way up, too, as Tanya says her 9-year-old daughter is a “car nut just like I am.”

Being around the old cars has made her appreciate just historic they are.

“The more connected you get into cars, the more people you know and really get to connect with,” she says. “There’s so much history there. Once these cars are gone, the history is gone. It’s sort of like you’re doing your part to keep history.”

Corvette Museum Surpasses Fundraising Goal to Build the Motorsports Park

Corvette Museum Surpasses Fundraising Goal to Build the Motorsports Park

The sound of horsepower will soon fill the air across the highway from the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

That’s because the NCM’s fundraising goal to raise an additional $1 million for the Motorsports Park by June 1st has come true. In fact, the Museum surpassed that amount by $95,471! With that goal met, it means that initial construction will include the west track.

The National Corvette Museum’s Executive Director Wendell Strode sent out a congratulatory email yesterday:

Dear Friends,

Thanks to YOU… WE DID IT!!! Not only did we hit our $1 million goal over the weekend, but we exceeded it by $95,471!

Because you helped us achieve this milestone in our fundraising efforts we will be including the West Track as part of the initial construction of the Motorsports Park.

The Motorsports Park Project Committee is continuing to look at specific pricing on various aspects and combinations for development of the Park. NCM Management and the Board of Directors plan to make a special announcement at the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, June 28 as to the amount of park development that will be included with the initial construction. We are so pleased that the West track will be included, thanks to the support of Corvette enthusiasts, members and friends, from all over.

The support each individual and club has made for this project is a strong testament to potential sponsors. We will continue to network with companies who are a good fit to have their name associated with the park. If you have any connections that could help us, please contact me (270-467-8814) or Connie (270-467-8815).

Excitement is growing as we keep driving the dream!

Wendell Strode, Executive Director

Although clearing has already started on the 184 acres, the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Motorsports Park project is planned for June 28,2013 as part of the Museum’s 60th Anniversary Corvette celebration.

Based on statements made by Strode and others, we believe the first phase will now include construction of the 2.0 mile west track and the autocross skid pad as well as the supporting infrastructure.

The entire project is estimated to cost $16.45 million. The first phase which includes the skid pad and 2.0 mile west track is estimated to cost $9 million. The Museum has already spent $2.7 million for the land, paid in part by $2.5 million in donations before the additional $1 million fundraising goal was set.

The Grand Opening for the NCM Motorsports Park is planned for Labor Day Weekend 2014 and will be held in conjunction with the NCM’s 20th Anniversary and the 5th National Corvette Caravan.

[ACCIDENT] C4 Corvette Rollover in Illinois

Two passengers in a white Corvette C4 convertible might want to buy some lottery tickets after the lucky men escaped without injury when the car rolled over in Springfield, Illinois on May 18.

The Corvette nearly fell into a ravine and wound up upside down after rolling over on Taylor Avenue about 7:30 p.m.

The cause of the mishap may have been a blowout, based on what witnesses reported hearing as the car traveled southbound and suddenly went out of control.

A nearby resident heard the crash, ran over, and cut one of the passengers out of his seatbelt.

The two passengers refused medical treatment, but their mishap blocked traffic in both directions for about an hour.
