Four Ways to Celebrate Corvette’s 60th Birthday this Weekend

Four Ways to Celebrate Corvette's 60th Birthday this Weekend

Chevrolet’s Corvette officially turns 60 this weekend. It was June 30th, 1953 when that first Polo White two seater left the Flint, MI assembly plant. If you’re looking for a way to help celebrate Corvette’s 60 year legacy you’ve got several options this weekend. From Illinois to Kentucky to Detroit there are plenty of events taking place and we’ve neatly summarized them all for you after the break.

There’s a quartet of big events going on around the country this weekend. The weekend kicks of a little early with Drive Your Corvette to Work day on Friday, June 28th. Also kicking off that day is the Bloomington Gold Corvette show in Champaign, Illinois. The National Corvette Museum will be hosting celebration at Corvette’s current birthplace in Bowling Green, Kentucky and Corvettes in the D will be taking place in Detroit at GM’s World Headquarters.

Here’s a quick snapshot of each event.

  1. Drive Your Corvette to Work Day: This event promoted by Mid America Motorworks takes place each year on the Friday closest to June 30th, Corvette’s official birthday. Whether you’re working or retired make it a point to get out drive your Corvette. If you do take your Vette to work post a picture on our Facebook wall or Tweet us at @CorvetteBlogger.
  2. Bloomington Gold: Bloomington is celebrating its 40th anniversary in a new home in Champaign, Illinois. This great event has something for everyone including seminars, Certification judging, a road tour, autocross, and a Mecum auction among numerous other activities. This is where we’ll be this weekend so keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for updates from the show.
  3. National Corvette Museum 60th Birthday Celebration: The NCM will be hosting a 2 day event at Corvette’s current birthplace in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Corvette program team will be in attendance as will several new C7’s. There will also be a Corvette evolution display, limited plant tours, and the formal ground breaking for the new NCM Motorsport Park.
  4. Corvettes in the D: This event takes place at GM’s world headquarters in downtown Detroit. The inaugural get together will feature a Corvette caravan from Flint down to Detroit as well as C7’s and a GM ride and drive. Event organizers are expecting 200-300 Corvettes to attend.

So there you have it – 4 different ways to celebrate 60 years of Corvettes. Even if you can’t make it to any of these fine events just be sure to get out there and hit the road in your Corvette!

Monterey Motorsports Reunion to Feature the Corvette Grand Sport Racers

Monterey Motorsports Reunion to Feature the Corvette Grand Sport Racers

Some special “guests” will help Corvette celebrate its 60th anniversary at the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in August.

The reunion, set for August 16-18, will feature two and perhaps even three of the legendary Corvette Grand Sport models from the 1960s.

Only five of the Grand Sports were ever produced in 1962, under the secret supervision of Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. The cars were designed with one goal in mind: whipping the competition at places like Sebring and Le Mans. To accomplish that mission, Zora focused on making everything as light as possible, with the use of aluminum tubing, thin fiberglass bodies, cast-magnesium wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes.

The cars were made in secret because back in 1957 GM had joined an industry-wide ban on active participation in racing. Once GM Chairman Frederic Donner heard that a Grand Sport had nearly set a track record at Sebring in 1962, he quickly made Zora and his team abort the plans. But that wasn’t the end of the Grand Sports.

Private teams mysteriously got hold of the cars, and GM engineers sometimes offered their help at big races while they just happened to be there on “vacation.’ One such engineer even managed to have a couple of differential coolers in his luggage to replace one that had overheated on a Grand Sport competing in the 1963 Nassau Speed Week in the Bahamas. Thanks to his help, the Grand Sports beat Shelby Cobras in the Governor’s Cup and Nassau Trophy races. Hmmm, after all, you just never know what you might need on vacation, huh?

The Corvette, as it celebrates its 60th anniversary, will be the star of the show at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, with more than 60 racing Corvettes of all generations slated to be on hand, including Grand Sports 003 and 004 to be shown in static and on-track events that weekend.

The last time we saw one of the original Corvette Grand Sports was last November at the Simeone Automotive Museum in Philadelphia. A Corvette Racing event was held there with Doug Fehan and one of the seminars featured its Grand Sport Roadster #002 doing laps in the parking lot.

The one-of-a-kind 2011 “Jake Edition” Corvette Grand Sport built for the 2010 SEMA show will be auctioned on Friday afternoon at the National Corvette Museum with proceeds going to the new NCM Motorsports Park. Tickets are just $20 and there are no limits on how many tickets will be sold.

The 2011 Jake Edition Corvette was built to showcase the Corvette Genuine Accessories catalog available at the parts counter of your local Chevy dealer. Here is how it was described when it first made is appearance in Las Vegas:

He started off as a discreet logo in 2005 that symbolized a tenacious attitude of the Corvette Racing team and ever since, the skull mascot known as Jake has grown to embody the determination and triumphs of the team. Now, Chevrolet designers have created the Corvette Jake Edition Concept, a special Grand Sport convertible concept vehicle that celebrates Corvette’s racing spirit.

The Corvette Jake Edition is a Grand Sport Coupe, with Z06 wheels featuring the Competition Gray finish. The matte Jake hood graphic from the GT1 commemorative model adds a subtle visual statement, while a host of other accessories round out the car’s unique appearance. Most of the parts added to this special Grand Sport are available today as Genuine Corvette Accessories or through any Chevrolet dealer’s parts department.

Since it was built in 2010, the Jake Edition Corvette has appeared at most of the major Corvette shows and other car related events around the country. It now has approximately 4,300 miles. About the only difference we see on the car from its reveal at SEMA are a set of different Competition Gray wheels.

The Corvette features the GT1 Championship Edition Jake logo on the hood as well as special Jake logo fender badges and center wheel caps. The Corvette also has the racing pedal kit with Jake floor mats. Under the hood is a Jake “underhood blanket” and Tech-pattern engine cover.
