[PIC] Throwback Thursday: At the Beach in a C1 Corvette

It’s time for Throwback Thursday where we feature vintage photos of Corvettes. This Monday is Labor Day which traditionally signals the end of Summer and for many kids out there, it’s time to head back to school.

During the 1970s and through the 1990s, my grandparents lived for years in a condo on New Smyrna Beach, Florida and I always loved how beach-go’ers could actually drive and park on the beach, just feet from the Atlantic Ocean.

I’ve sure seen my share of Corvettes on the beach and hope one day to get my ’66 Corvette back over to East Coast of Florida sometime just to say yes, I’ve done that as well!

Do you have any vintage Corvette pictures to share? Let us know!

Edmunds Track Tests the 2014 Corvette Stingray vs the 2013 SRT Viper

We knew it was coming – this battle between the 2013 Viper and the long-awaited 2014 Corvette Stingray.

Edmunds.com quite simply labels it the “Best. War. Ever.” Few would argue.

And (spoiler alert) while Edmunds, in the end, gives the nod to the latest-generation Corvette, it admits that the Viper is a very, very special car, despite its shortcomings.

“Because of its much lower price, manners that are easy to live with in daily use and still astonishing performance, the Corvette takes a narrow win here,” Edmunds proclaims. “It is the one car you can drive comfortably every day and still use to dominate a track day. Built around an impregnable structure, overstuffed with technology that actually improves the driving experience, and so easygoing you can commute in it with one finger on the wheel, it’s this year’s great leap forward for the entire breed of sports cars.”

The Stingray takes a moral victory in performance results because it gives up 180 horses and 135 lb-ft in torque to the Viper, yet GM’s latest creation managed to be less than a second behind the Viper around the 1.6-mile Willow Springs course.

“During development the Chrysler and GM engineers were aiming at very different, very specific things with these cars,” Edmunds writes. “And all that is apparent even before anyone puts them into gear.”

Here’s what they had to say about the C7, calling it a “two-seater that doesn’t scrimp on comfort. It’s quiet but makes a great sound when the engine is working. Pick the right suspension setting and it rides over freeways better than some Cadillacs, and what is ferociously precise steering on track mellows into easygoing operation during commutes. In some significant ways (suspension compliance and steering feel in particular) the Corvette is easier to live with than a Malibu. It’s that easy and that good.”

Meanwhile, Edmunds says the Viper “is actually oddly wonderful on the street. This isn’t the sort of car you take through the drive-through or to Home Depot to pick up bathroom fixtures. Sure, you can drive it every day if you really want to, but this is a special event car; every time it’s on the road it’s a one-car parade. It’s a car that feels alive from the heft of the shifter to the heat from its side exhaust. This car doesn’t take you for a ride, it demands you pay attention and get involved in the driving experience. You want cushy comfort, buy a Charger. It’s right next to the Viper on the showroom floor.”

Maybe it’s a great day to be an American when we can have two supercars made in this nation, huh?

Official 2014 Corvette Stingray Configurator is Now Online

Official 2014 Corvette Stingray Configurator is Now Online

Nearly eight months since the 2014 Corvette Stingray was unveiled in Detroit, GM has finally got their “Build Your Own” Stingray configurator online. The Configurator allows you to set up the Stingray Coupe or the Stingray Convertible with the options and colors you want and then see the official MSRP for all the options selected.

“Honey, I need $878 a month for 72 months!”

That’s the estimated monthly payment I came up with after selecting the Arctic White 2LT Corvette Stingray Coupe with Z51 and the 7-speed manual transmission, Magnetic Ride Control, NPP Performance Exhaust and then outfitting it with the optional Black Z51 wheels and red painted calipers. My final exterior item was the Carbon Flash spoiler and outside mirrors. On the inside I added the FAY Carbon Fiber Trim, Navigation system and the 3-spoke suede microfiber-wrapped steering wheel.

The Corvette Stingray configurator says my dream Corvette will cost me $66,325 so then I ran through the options of 10% cash down and financing 1.9% for 72 months to arrive at the $878 per month payment.

Since I found the configurator, I have probably outfitted three different stingrays in the last 24 hours, playing with options and colors and even maxing out one Stingray Coupe with all possible options for $79,340!

The configurator isn’t quite finished though as it doesn’t yet show your car virtually with the options and colors selected. The exterior shows only a silhouette while the interior does allow you to see some of the different colors inside.

If you like the new Corvette Stingray Convertible, then luckily there’s an online configurator for the topless Stingray as well.

Go go head to Chevrolet.com and choose either the Stingray Coupe or the Stingray Convertible and build your dream Corvette!

And remember, once you have built your Corvette Stingray online and are ready to place your order, we recommend these dealers who are not charging more than MSRP for America’s newest Sports Car. Check out Kerbeck Corvette, Mike Furman at Criswell Corvette and Sport Chevrolet. These three dealers not only support CorvetteBlogger.com as sponsors, but they are also supporting Corvette owners by selling Corvettes at MSRP.

Oh, here is a pic of that 2014 Arctic White Corvette Stingray that I’m so in love with. Someday…
