OK, so drop-top sales have plummeted by half in the past decade, with some in the autos universe all but signing the convertible’s death warrant.

Danny Kellermeyer’s Corvette carried the checkered flag for two recent Showcase Races

Danny Kellermeyer signs a fan’s hat after his Saturday race.
Waterford Hills Road Racing (WHRRI) in Clarkston, MI, drew numerous vintage racecars during the July 27-28 weekend for the Canadian-American Challenge. These vintage cars brought back the days of old racing, as cars from the 50s to 80s hit the track for action-packed competition.

Danny’s #37 Corvette.
But that’s not all! The WHRRI also hosted the ground-pounding showcase race of current cars, including driver Danny Kellermeyer (sponsored by Michigan Corvette dealer Matick Chevy) in his yellow C6. Kellermeyer set the pole with a field of 15 cars close behind. The field of BMWs, Corvettes, Camaros and Firebirds ran some awesome times, but at the end, Kellermeyer’s Corvette carried the checkered flag for both of the Showcase Races.

“I was glad we were able to pull off the wins for all our friends and fans that were at the track this weekend,†says Kellermeyer. “We were really glad to see many of our Corvette friends out there for the Corvette Hospitality Day on Saturday. We know they enjoyed all the activities.â€

Saturday saw many Corvette owners enjoying the races, partaking in parade laps, viewing a flagging display, and meeting the drivers. Activities also took place under the D.J. Racing paddock canopy. Many stopped by the trailer to watch the crew prep the racecars.
Kellermeyer’s teammates were Norm Betts of Ann Arbor, MI, and Robert Pfeffer of Indianapolis, IN. Pfeffer not only drove his black #38 C5 Corvette, but also drove the C4 Morrison Corvette in a vintage group.
“I broke the differential in the Morrison Corvette during the Saturday race,†Pfeffer explains. “Danny (Kellermeyer) had a spare diff , which he got for us, and after a couple hours, it was in. I had to start in last place for the race, but worked my way up to the front to finish first overall. I could not ask for a better team than our D.J. Racing team.â€

Kellermeyer’s scorecard this year shows 15 races thus far with all podium finishes. “I have been really lucky so far this season with one 3rd place, two 2nd places and ten 1st- place finishes,†enthuses Kellermeyer. “We have been working hard to stay up front and it has been paying offâ€.
Kellermeyer’s next race will be Aug. 10-11, again at WHRRI in Clarkston. This WHRRI Race #4 will be in memory of Vern Roberts, who was a Corvette race driver and a friend to all. A special memorial will be held prior to the race on Saturday, honoring Roberts.
If you get a chance, stop by, watch the racing and say hi to the D.J. Racing team.
And if you can’t get to the track on those days, the Matick-DJ Racing Silver C6 will be on display in the Matick Chevrolet Tent at the Corvettes America show at Alpine Valley in White Lake on Aug. 10. Or do both — hit the Corvette show in the morning and drive 20 minutes to WHRRI and watch the racing later in the day!
Matick Chevrolet is a sponsor of the Corvettes America show, this year under the direction of show chairs Richard Heldenbrand, president of the host America’s Corvette Club, and Larry Courtney, Michigan captain for the 2014 National Corvette Caravan.

2013 Corvettes on Woodward Event is August 14th – 16th
The days of the calendar are flipping by faster than the new C7 can sprint from 0-60mph. August is nearly upon which means that the Woodward Dream Cruise is right around the corner. Along with that comes all of the activities beforehand that makeup the annual Corvettes on Woodward fiesta. Once again, organizer Larry Courtney has assembled 3 full days Corvette goodness for participants.
Each year on the Wednesday before the Woodward Dream Cruise Corvette enthusiasts gather to support the Open Hands Food Pantry in Royal Oak, MI. Corvettes on Woodward began as a 1 night only Corvette takeover of famous Woodward Avenue. Today it’s a multi-day festival of all things Corvette and the 2013 edition takes place in just a couple of weeks.
The highlight of Corvettes on Woodward is the Wednesday night cruise down world famous Woodward Avenue. The event now consistently draws over 500 Corvettes each year to a Radisson hotel in Bloomfield Hills for staging.
From there it’s about 5 miles of cruising south to the food bank to drop off generous donations. In addition to the edible goodies, the cash donations are typically enough to buy 40,000lbs of food each year. That’s the weight of about 12 Corvettes.
This year there are 5 tours and 2 meet and greets scheduled. Here’s how the whole agenda looks for 2013.
Activities on Wednesday, August 14th get started with a tour of the GM Heritage Center at 10am. There currently is only one tour scheduled but an additional tour could be added if there is demand. Cost is just $10 per person to view this priceless collection of 100+ years of GM history.
After the Heritage Center, you’ll head over to the Radisson Hotel for staging for the big cruise. The lot opens at noon. At the hotel there will be a 50/50 drawing and a Cauley Performance Automotive truck taking food donations for those not cruising to the Open Hands Food Pantry. Vendor displays will include Corvette Central, Eye Candy Wraps, Matick Chevrolet (with Callaways!), Galli Sports Apparel, and Cruis’News magazine. Information on the 2014 National Corvette Caravan will be available as well. The police will show up at 7pm to block off Woodward so 500+ Corvettes can head south. Like last year, a $5 donation will be collected when you enter in order to offset expenses. Any excess collected is donated to the food pantry. All attendees will get a raffle ticket and the first 250 Corvettes will get a dash plaque. After you’ve dropped off your goodies head on up to the Moose Preserve restaurant at Square Lake and Woodward any time after 8pm. (CorvetteBlogger tip: don’t forget to order the fresh made chocolate chips cookies).
Thursday’s adventure is a visit to the massive Lingenfelter Collection in nearby Brighton, MI. As of now, the time is still TBD, but it’s usually a morning tour. Contact Larry Courtney to reserve your spot as this tour is limited to 100 people. Cost is free, but a $10 donation to the Lingenfelter charities is usually offered up. Later on at 7pm head over to the Hooters at Rochester and Big Beaver roads for another meet and greet.
Friday August 16th is a very busy day. The action begins with a 10am stop at the Webber Wildlife Museum in Clinton Township, a 1pm tour at Katech (limited to 24 people), and wraps up at the Stahl Automotive Museum and their open free house from 1-4pm.
Corvettes on Woodward is rapidly growing into a can’t miss Corvette event each year. Make your plans now the tours and Radisson parking will fill up quickly. For more information on the event follow the COW thread on Corvette Forum, email organizer Larry Courtney at vjnlcsvette@aol.com, or give him a call at 586-876-6923.

[PIC] Throwback Thursday: A Day at the Races
It’s time for Throwback Thursday where we feature vintage photos of Corvettes. Today’s subject is a one near and dear to our hearts – taking your Corvette racing!
We’re seeing nothing older than a 1965 Corvette in the picture and if you look right in the middle of the photograph, it appears there is one and perhaps two black 1963 Fuel Injected Sting Ray Coupes.
We’re thinking this is California with the mountains in th background but if anyone has a definitive location, please let us know in the comments below.
