Corvette Racing at Baltimore: A Grand Prix, Indeed!

Compuware Corvettes to test their mettle around Inner Harbor street circuit

DETROIT (Aug. 27, 2013) – Crab cakes, Camden Yards and Charm City’s temporary street circuit await Corvette Racing and its two Compuware Chevrolet Corvette C6.R race cars this weekend with the third running of the Grand Prix of Baltimore. The two-hour race is the seventh round of the American Le Mans Series and the second street race of the season. One of the newest venues on the ALMS calendar has been kind to Corvette Racing with podium finishes in the event’s first two years.

The concrete canyons along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor frame a demanding and unforgiving layout that will challenge Corvette Racing’s four drivers. ALMS GT championship leaders Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner – who lives 90 minutes from Baltimore in his native Virginia – drive the No. 4 Compuware Corvette that has won two races this season. Meanwhile, Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen look to win for the second time in 2013 with their No. 3 Corvette. The pair stands fourth in the drivers’ standings but only six points out of first place.

With four races remaining in the ALMS season, positions and points are at a premium. In addition to the drivers’ championship, Chevrolet leads the GT manufacturers’ standings, as does Corvette Racing in the team category.

The Inner Harbor circuit measures 2.02 miles in length with 12 turns. The long frontstretch features a temporary chicane to slow cars before crossing a light-rail line prior to start-finish and a hard right-hander for Turn 1. The course also features a tight hairpin turn and a run around Camden Yards – home of Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles.

Corvette Racing appears to have history – brief as it may be – on its side at Baltimore. Gavin and Magnussen were third in 2011 with Gavin and Milner runners-up last year en route to the ALMS championship. Gavin was on pole position and set the fastest GT race lap in 2012, and Magnussen was the fastest driver in the 2011 race.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“Street circuits have always been some of my favorite tracks. Last year I discovered both of the ALMS street circuits for the first time – Long Beach and Baltimore. Because the schedules were so tight, it was harder to get on the pace right away without knowing the track. This year is completely different. I have a race at Baltimore under my belt now – even if it wasn’t a good one because we got a puncture right at the start.

“Over the years, Corvette Racing has been competitive on all types of circuits – road courses and street circuits. Whatever kind of track will are on, the car is always competitive. We just need to be focused and get in a rhythm as soon as possible. Like any street circuit, you cannot make any mistakes and keep the car on the track until the end of the race.”

(On the level of focus for a street circuit) “You cannot ‘relax’ as much as on a road course, for sure. You always are focused even if you’re on a straight because of the bumps which are present. The level of focus needs to be a little higher. Everywhere is a potential place to make a mistake.”

JAN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 3 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“It’s a fun track. It has quite a lot of grip in the surfaces we run on. That gives you confidence right away even though there is not a lot of room. Some places are very, very bumpy. (The chicane) is a little bit of an issue for everyone because it is a movable chicane. And we move it! Whoever uses that chicane best takes the most chances but can make the most gains. Other than that, I’m looking forward to going back there. It’s always a fantastic show in downtown Baltimore.”

(On the GT championship with four rounds remaining) “The manufacturer championship is most important to us. We keep reminding ourselves and the team reminds us that the ultimate goal is to win the manufacturer championship for Chevrolet. So far that has panned out well and continues to do so.”

OLIVER GAVIN, NO. 4 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“Baltimore is a lot of fun. I have some pretty good memories from there. I won pole last year, which was very satisfying. I enjoy the circuit. It is, alongside Sebring, the most aggressive circuit we race on in terms of the bumps and how physical the circuit can be. It’s tight and challenging. The walls are right there and you have to run right against them. I actually have the wing mirror from last year! The team gave it to me after the Baltimore event. The right side is missing – just the end part of it – as I scraped up against the side of the wall in qualifying. That’s kind of satisfying to do that kind of thing; you’re right on the limit and can’t use any more of the circuit.”

(Describing a lap) “It’s unique like every street circuit is. Braking into Turn 1 is tricky and challenging because it’s bumpy and it’s wide. You’re all the time wondering what side of the track you need to be. Can I be looking further on the inside or all the way out? Also just before the corner late in the braking zone, it goes quite a bit downhill. So that’s another thing that can catch you out. Braking into Turn 3 – the hairpin – is super bumpy but you always get a lot of grip right and the end of the braking zone and it’s very wide. Then you come back along the circuit to where the pits are, and they always resurface that area where the tram lines go. That part is very ‘grippy’. They use very good tarmac there. That part of the track is very quick, and there is another section back around the other side of the baseball field just before you get back on the start-finish straight.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“It’s a home race for me. The last couple years, it’s been a fantastic event with good crowds and lots of new people to see us race. It’s great to see that the D.C., Virginia and Maryland areas have embraced the race like they have. I’m looking forward to getting back there again. We were second last year, and obviously that one is high on my list of ones I want to win.

(On the track) “It’s a good street track. I was pretty impressed the first year when they came with a brand new track. It’s tough to fit it in an area like the Inner Harbor where they want to have the race. There are some good passing spots with some sections that bumpy, some that are smooth. There are fast sections, slow stuff and hairpins… it’s challenging and fun for the drivers and makes for a good race track.

“There are bits and pieces that are challenging in their own right. Turn 1 is tough because the street has not been repaved or resurfaced at all. You’re kind of going uphill then down a little, and it’s a super-tight right-hander that is a great passing spot. It’s tough to squeeze the last couple of tenths out of the car there. It’s tougher when you’re offline because it’s so dirty. The last sweeping left- and right-hander before you come back on to Pratt Street is difficult because those are extremely quick corners for a street track. There is no margin for area. I’ve tried to push and find some more speed but you can get loose easily, and that’s a pretty scary moment.”

DOUG FEHAN, CORVETTE RACING PROGRAM MANAGER

“As difficult as road racing can be, nothing compares to the intensity of a battle on the streets of a major urban center. This time it will be the Inner Harbor of the great city of Baltimore. To be successful here, it takes the perfect balance of patience and aggression on the part of the drivers along with an effective race strategy and finished off with flawless execution by the crew guys in pit lane. With only four rounds to go in the ALMS season, every lap and every stop will play a vital role in retaining our ALMS manufacturers’ championship. With nine of those titles under our belt, you can bet we are ready to capture number 10.”

2014 Corvette Stingray Retail Production is Underway

2014 Corvette Stingray Retail Production is Underway

Over the weekend at Corvettes at Carlisle, select GM engineers in attendance gave a series of quickie seminars (5-10 minutes and then Q&A) at the top of each hour. On Saturday morning, Steve Grilli, Bowling Green Assembly’s Quality Manager spoke and confirmed that retail production for the 2014 Corvette Stingray is underway as well as some other interesting tidbits of Stingray news.

We missed the seminar so we are relying on a Corvette Forum thread started by forum member MDK9950 who appears to have taken some decent notes.

The biggest news is that 2014 Corvette Stingray retail production has officially began. Members on the forums who have submitted orders have started receiving their VINs and customers are reporting that their order has moved to Status Code “3800″ which means that their Corvette has been produced.

But just because the Corvettes have been produced doesn’t mean they are shipping right out. Remember that John Fitzpatrick told us that the new Corvette Stingrays will undergo a quality assessment process so it may still be another month before these cars are actually shipped from Bowling Green. Look for status code “4200″ which will indicate to the customer that the vehicle has shipped.

Grilli said the plant is currently producing about 20 cars per day, but will be ramping it up to about 18.5 Corvettes per hour which equals 135 Corvettes per day and 30,000 cars per year. That’s about the same volume of Corvettes that we saw produced annually in 2005-2008 prior to the Carpocalype and GM’s bankruptcy. If memory serves me correct, the final C6s were built at a rate of around 8.5 per hour.

In other production news, Grilli announced that the C7 Test Fleet which comprises just over 200 Corvette Stingrays have completed 1,000,000 miles of real world testing last week. GM subcontracts the testing of Corvettes to a third party.

Finally, Grilli gave a couple of updates on the two known Corvette Stingray crashes which include the Laguna Blue Corvette in Arizona and the Cyber Gray Stingray t-boned by the Lincoln Towncar in Detroit. The Laguna Blue Corvette had its body panels and frame repaired and it was put back into service. The Cyber Gray C7 is waiting for body parts (fender, door, quarter panel) and will go back into service once the repairs are complete. As a testament to driver safety, both C7 Corvette drivers walked away from their accidents with no injuries.

[VIDEO] Jay Leno and Rick Hendrick Impressed After Driving the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Count talk-show host Jay Leno and racing icon Rick Hendrick among the growing legion of fans of the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

The two men got a first-hand look at the Stingray this month during an appearance in Marina, Calif., and came away mightily impressed.

“I think it’s the coolest Corvette that I’ve ever looked at,” said Hendrick, who plunked down more than $2 million (going to charity) to have the privilege of buying the first Stingray coupe and convertible.

“It just grabs you,” he said. “When I saw it, you know, I just thought immediately the first thing that came to mind, this is a Ferrari killer! It’s a great day for Chevrolet and it’s a great day for Corvette.”

Leno, meanwhile, is no stranger to Corvettes, pointing out to reporters that when he got his first Z06 in 2002, it was the most powerful Corvette with 405 horsepower.

“Now the standard Corvette (Stingray) is more powerful than the most powerful Corvette just 10 years ago,” Leno said, excited to get behind the wheel. “I’ve been a Corvette guy for a long time. I’ve got a ZR1, I’ve got a lot of Corvettes, and I’m just anxious to see what the new platform is like.”

Leno had the honor of climbing behind a dark gray Stingray and leading a parade of classic Corvettes.

“Oh yeah, it’s a terrific car, an amazing car,” he said after climbing out, “especially for the value. It’s an amazing car for the money.”

Ed Welburn, VP of Global Design for GM, posed for photos with Leno and Hendrick and admits that there may be some other great cars with incredible capability “that come somewhat close to this, but they don’t have the emotion, they don’t have the passion” of the new Corvette.

“I’m driving one now, and everywhere I go, people – I don’t care who they are, what their background is, what they are personally driving – they just get excited when they see the car.”

Corvette Central Launches Online Swap Meet Catalog

Corvette Central Launches Online Swap Meet Catalog

Corvette Central’s founder Jerry Kohn has been collecting used and NOS parts for Corvettes since the mid-1970′s and says he’s always envisioned the day when he can begin to pare down his collection by hosting a swap meet. Well that time is now here where you can search through his collection and buy these parts at www.ccswapmeet.com.

Imagine you’re at one of the big Corvette shows and have walked the aisles where vendors have all their new, used and new old stock (NOS) parts laid out on the grass or on tables. Many vendors sell an eclectic mix of parts and that’s what you’ll find at Corvette Central’s swap meet. We browsed the C2 section which contained everything from the console shift plate diagrams to bumper brackets to original wood steering wheels.

Many of the parts are “survivor quality” which means they are unrestored but are still working components. These age-appropriate parts were mostly acquired off of actual Corvettes in the late-1970s and early 1980s. Jerry says “they may not be new, but it looks correct”.

Swap Meet parts are also located in Corvette Central’s regular online catalogs. You can use the search function to enter the original GM part number or a description to see if that is one of the parts available in the swap meet collection.

“I always envisioned setting up at a swap meet to sell a lot of the old parts I had saved over the years. With the advent of the internet and specialty sites like eBay, a virtual swap meet becomes reality: available to customers worldwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year” says Corvette Central’s founder Jerry Kohn.

Corvette Central’s Swap Meet Parts come with a 30 day money back guarantee so you can buy with confidence. Check out Corvette Central’s online Swap Meet today at www.ccswapmeet.com.

Fortune Magazine: Corvette Stingray – A Harbinger of GM’s Turnaround?

Fortune Magazine: Corvette Stingray - A Harbinger of GM's Turnaround?

The seventh-generation Corvette continues to earn positive reviews from the media.

The latest to jump aboard the Stingray bandwagon is Fortune Magazine.

One of its writers came away mightily impressed after testing the car earlier this month in Monterey, Calif., just as our own Keith Cornett did.

Fortune also got a professional driver, Jorge Koechlin von Stein, to come along and see what he thought about Chevrolet’s 2014 Chevrolet Stingray. Add Von Stein, a former racer-turned-journalist who competed in the British Formula One Series, to the growing list of C7 fans. Fortune says von Stein was “unreservedly ecstatic” about the car’s performance over 150 miles of winding roads, not all of them in the best of condition, either.

Fortune admits it’s too early to tell if the rest of General Motors will respond favorably and come along for the Stingray ride but did point out that Chevy’s new sports car competes very favorably with competition that costs twice as much or more, including Porsches and Ferraris.

“Watch out” was the warning that von Stein offered up to Stingray competitors since the car’s 455 horsepower engine is capable of 0 to 60 times of 3.8 seconds while offering a very rewarding driving experience at a base price of just $51,995.

Another man who apparently believes GM is on the way back up, thanks to new cars like the Stingray and the 2014 Impala, is Warren Buffett, who makes a habit of buying undervalued companies in anticipation of their stock rising.

Buffett says his company, Berkshire Hathaway, recently upped its shares of GM stock by 60 percent, or 15 million shares, to a total of 40 million shares.

Fortune says the 2014 Stingray is reminiscent of the first batch of Lexus cars back in the early 1990s, which ultimately proved that Toyota’s new luxury brand was capable of running with the big boys like Mercedes-Benz.

[STOLEN] 1962 Corvette Stolen In Pacific Grove, CA

[STOLEN] 1962 Corvette Stolen In Pacific Grove, CA

A Camino, California resident is hoping that someone out there can help get his red 1962 Corvette back after it became the fourth classic Chevy stolen in Monterey during Car Week earlier this month.

The owner, named Pat, says he was in town for the Rolex Motorsports Reunion. After he and his wife had dinner on Saturday, Aug. 17, they returned in the Corvette about 8:30 p.m. to a bed and breakfast in the 300 block of Central Avenue in Pacific Grove, then turned in for the evening only to wake up the next morning and find their prized possession of the past 20 years missing!

“Another guest at the inn arrived at approximately 9:30 hours and noticed the Corvette was not in the designated parking location,” Pat says in a post on Corvette Forum. “They didn’t think too much of it because it was still somewhat early. Additionally, there were 8-10 people eating dinner not more than 20′ from the car!!!!! Very bold on the thief’s part!”

Pat says he had the keys and believes he would have heard the car engine if the thief had cranked the Corvette.

Pacific Grove police Cmdr. John Miller believes the thieves probably used a trailer and says that would not have attracted attention since that’s a common sight during Car Week.

Now Pat just hopes someone will have a clue that will lead to the return of the car, which has a California license plate of BZE636.

“Please be on the look-out for my car in the pictures provided,” Pat says on CorvetteForum.com. “The hood is very distinctive as well as the front wheels. The color is russo red and is much deeper red than appears in this photo. This pic doesn’t show the hardtop. Unfortunately I just placed the hardtop on the car after recently restoring the entire top!”

If you have any information about the theft, call Pat at 916-719-9442 or the Pacific Grove Police Department.

The Corvette was the fourth classic Chevy stolen during Car Week, a rare occurrence, according to Miller.

“During GP we’ve experienced this, because there are so many motorcycles in town and they’re relatively easy to just roll up onto a trailer,” he said. “But during Concours, we haven’t had any thefts in my (four) years here.”

That all changed on Aug. 16 and 17 when two 1961 Impalas and a 1957 Bel Air were stolen, according to the Monterey Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.

Lost Cars of the 1980s – 1988 Chevrolet Nova Twin-Cam

In 1988, Chevrolet launched a new model variant that came to market with the brand’s first-ever four-valve-per-cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts, electronic fuel injection, a variable induction system to boost high-end performance and a stratospheric 7,500 RPM redline.
