Chevrolet Reveals Its 2014 Corvette Stingray Concepts for SEMA

Chevrolet Reveals Its 2014 Corvette Stingray Concepts for SEMA

On the eve of the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas and hours before they are officially revealed in person at this evening’s Media reception (which will be live streamed starting at 7:25 pm PT), Chevrolet is showing off its performance car portfolio consisting of Corvettes, Camaros and the new Chevy SS Performance Sedan.

There are three Corvette Stingray Concepts being shown at SEMA, two Stingray Coupes and a Convertible. Chevy is calling two of the Corvette Stingrays the Atlantic and Pacific Concepts. The third Stingray is the real life version of a Corvette that can be seen and driven in the upcoming Play Station 3 game Gran Turismo 6, which commemorates the games 15th anniversary.

The Corvette Stingray Convertible Atlantic Concept

The Corvette Stingray Convertible Atlantic Concept represents the East Coast with its sophisticated styling enhancements and upscale looks. For the first time. Chevy is showing a front splitter and what they are calling rocker extensions for the side of the car. The Atlantic also has Fusion Gray headlamp housings and hood accents.

You also notice that the Corvette Convertible Atlantic Concept has the Competition Sport seats and is trimmed with a suede wrapped interior. The Atlantic Concept is powered by an LT1 V8 coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Stingray Convertible Atlantic Concepts also is showing off many of the official accessories that will be available to all Corvette Stingrays buyers including:

The Corvette Stingray Coupe Pacific Concept

For Left coast fans, Chevrolet’s designers created the Corvette Stingray Coupe Pacific Concept, a red-hot looking track-inspired ride in anyone’s book. This is a Z51-equipped Corvette Stingray Coupe with the LT1 V8 mated to a seven-speed transmission, dry sump oiling system and the transaxle features an electronic limited-slip differential.

The Corvette Stingray Coupe Pacific Concept features a Torch Red exterior complimented with a carbon fiber hood and visible carbon-fiber weave on the removable roof panel. Like the Atlantic Concept, the Pacific Concept comes outfitted with a carbon fiber trim kit with a front splitter and rocker extensions in black.

Like its right coast Atlantic Concept, the Pacific Concept Stingray Coupe is outfitted by a number of Chevrolet Accessories including the 19″ and 20″ black wheels with a red accent stripe.

The Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo Concept

Finally, the third Stingray pays homage to the video game that helped launch the seventh generation sports car. Before the Corvette Stingray was shown to the public in January, a camouflaged version of the car appeared in Gran Turismo 5, allowing Corvette fans the opportunity to drive the car online before it was launched a month later in Detroit.

Now for Gran Turismo 6 and just in time for the game’s 15th anniversary is a real life concept version of the video game car, complete with race inspired elements like yellow-tinted headlamps, a carbon fiber rear wing and a ground effects kit which comes with carbon fiber rockers and front splitter. The custom exterior also features a custom front grille, a racing-style tow hook and custom exhaust tips.

On the inside, you’ll find the Competition Sport racing seats with driver and passenger racing harnesses, a custom flat-bottom steering wheel and a leather wrapped safety belt bar and rear braces.

The Gran Turismo concept is powered by the 460 horsepower LT1 V8 engine and comes with a seven-speed transmission.

The George Barris “Asteroid” Corvette to Cross Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Auction Block

The George Barris

Taking advantage of the current red hot vintage Corvette market, Barrett-Jackson will be offering George Barris’ customized 1963 second generation Corvette known as “Asteroid” during their January auction extravaganza in Scottsdale, Arizona, January 12 -19, 2014.

This year Barrett-Jackson will open the doors to a completely new auction facility at the same West World of Scottsdale location they have used in prior years.

The dazzling metallic copper Corvette was fully restored earlier this year and is owned by Lance Miller of Corvettes at Carlisle fame and Randy Koettel owner of Desert Autosport . As Barris customized creations go, the Corvette would be considered “tame” and was built for the successful business entrepreneur and offshore powerboat champion Bob Nordskog to serve as a street car, a race car, and show car.

The Corvette has been well documented from the day it was originally ordered unpainted by Nordskog in 1963. Right from the start he intended to have Barris add his styling touch to the newly introduced split window coupe and have the 327 cubic inch engine modified. Nordskog had the engine reworked with a 350 camshaft which changed the cubic inches to 357 and upped the horsepower to 400. In addition to the engine performance modifications several of the engine components were chromed or painted gold for show.

The George Barris

George Barris is legendary and has created some of the most legendary show and movie cars in the country. He created the most iconic television cars such as The Munsters Koach, Knight Rider and Batmobile, which sold at last year’s Barrett-Jackson auction for a staggering $4,620,000.

Known as the “King of the Kustomizers”, he made several styling changes to Nordskog’s second generation Corvette, including a restyled lengthened nose, hiding the headlights behind a custom grill, a reworked rear fascia and the removal of the center stile of the iconic split rear window. In addition he added chrome headers which exited through the side body panels, similar to Larry Shinoda’s 1961 Mako Shark Corvette concept car. The interior was entirely reworked in pearl and cream.

The George Barris Nordskog had two sets of wheels and tires for the ostentatious Corvette, chrome American Racing mags and oversized tires when he raced the car and chrome wire wheels when he used it on the street or for show. When Barris finished with the Asteroid it was a big hit, literally. It appeared on the cover of Jan and Dean’s hit album Drag City, which was released in the fall of 1963. It also appeared in several magazines, such as Hot Rod.

Recently the Asteroid was unveiled after its restoration at Miller’s Corvettes at Carlisle event this past August.

Just a few weeks ago a modified 1963 Corvette given to Harley Earl by GM honoring his contribution to the Corvette crossed Mecum’s auction block. That car also was modified with chrome headers that exited through the side body panels and had a custom interior. Earl’s car brought $1.5M.

A decade ago “customized” Corvettes were often overlooked and sometimes scorned by the collector. But in recent times customized Corvettes in outstanding condition or fully restored have seen prices soar. No longer is it considered “heresy” to modify a Corvette as can be seen by the prices “restomod” Corvettes are bringing at auction. Based on the attention the Asteroid received at Carlisle coupled with its provenance, documentation, well known owner, famous builder, storied history and outstanding restoration, there is little doubt that it should attract a lot of attention when it crosses the block at Barrett-Jackson in January.

[VIDEO] Edmunds Takes their Long Term C7 Corvette Stingray to the Track

What will it be like living with a Stingray for months, way past the honeymoon period?

In this YouTube video, Edmunds editors Mike Monticello and Chris Walton offer a sneak preview of their long-term test of a 2014 Lime Rock Green Corvette Stingray that they’ll be keeping a close eye on for the next several months.

Balance is the word that keeps coming up in their early description of the C7, especially as it goes around the skidpad. Monticello compares the new Corvette favorably with a Porsche 911 when it comes to going back and forth between understeer and oversteer.

“This is right out of the box base Corvette with a handling package, and it’s making crazy numbers,” Walton says. He says he can’t even imagine what kind of performance Chevy will wring out of the big-tire Corvettes that are on the way (Z06 and ZR1).

A lot of people are wondering how the C7 compares to the C6, Monticello noted. It’s more of a complete car, a balanced car, he says.

“Where we noticed the big difference really was in the handling,” Monticello says.

The C7 weighs 80 pounds more than its predecessor, “but it’s how it manages the extra weight” that makes the difference, Walton says. “It’s like it doesn’t even exist. The car just feels tighter, smaller, more complete, much pointier I guess is a word that I would use, that I use a lot. When you turn the wheel, it goes right where you point it, right now.”

The Edmunds staff is “pretty thrilled and full of anticipation for the next year with this Corvette,” he concluded, and their preliminary testing at the track proved that this next generation is a real sports car.
