Michigan Corvette Caravan Plans Taking Shape For 2014 Big Event

Michigan Caravan
Larry Courtney, Michigan captain for the 2014 National Corvette Caravan, has assumed leadership duties for Indiana and Western Kentucky caravans.
“It’s another big territory to handle and I took on the role since there was no one else available to coordinate activities from those regions,†reports Larry. “Our hotel rooms in Indianapolis and Bowling Green are now at a premium so if you are still thinking about joining us for this once-every-five-year big event, contact me ASAP.â€
He has been busy lining up driving routes, hotel accommodations, meals and special activities from the trip to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., home of the Corvette Assembly Plant. Thousands of Corvette lovers are expected to pack the museum grounds the week before Labor Day for a host of special events, car displays, Corvette presentations and plant tours.
George Matick Chevrolet, sponsor of Larry Courtney’s flag-wrapped C5 Corvette, is the primary Michigan Caravan host dealer. Participants from metro Detroit will gather at Matick Chevy for a kick-off program at 8 a.m. on Aug. 26.
Northern Michigan participants will gather at Hank Graff Chevrolet in Davison.
Matick and Graff Corvette Caravan participants will then travel to Caron Chevrolet in Marshall, where they will meet up with other caravan members from West Michigan.
Together, these Corvette enthusiasts will parade to Indianapolis, where they will join the Indiana and Western Kentucky caravans, and spend the night at the Wyndham Hotel before heading to the museum the next day.
Larry is coordinating caravan activities at the Indianapolis Speedway and in Bowling Green.

National Corvette Museum Announces 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees
In baseball, it’s Cooperstown, New York. In football, it’s Canton, Ohio. In hockey, it’s Toronto, Ontario. For Corvette people, our heroes are enshrined in the Corvette Hall of Fame in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The National Corvette Museum recently revealed their 2014 HOF inductees and this year’s class includes a noted author, a former Assistant Chief Engineer, and a celebrated Corvette racing driver.
The National Corvette Museum’s annual inductees to the Hall of Fame come from any of 3 genres including GM/Chevrolet, Enthusiast/Historian, and Racing.
Here’s a CorvetteBlogger tip of the cap to the Corvette Hall of Fame class of 2014.
Jerry Burton has published several Corvette-related books and served in several editorial roles in the industry. He was the Founding Editor and Editorial Director of Corvette Quarterly magazine, the Motorsports Editor for AutoWeek and served various other roles at numerous other automotive publications. Some of his original works include “Zora Arkus-Duntov: The Legend Behind Corvette,” and “Corvette: America’s Sports Car: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” In addition to serving on the NCM Board of Directors, he’s also the man behind GM’s old “Heartbeat of America” tagline.

John Heinricy’s already has a spot inside the NCM as a statue with the 1989 Corvette ZR-1 “Record Run” display. That exhibit celebrates the 12 world time and distance speed records averaging in a C4 Corvette.
He also served as Corvette Assistant Chief Engineer and helped developed the e 1995 Pace Car, 1996 Grand Sport, and Collector’s Edition. Out on the track he claimed 11 SCCA national championships driving, of course, a Corvette.
Dave MacDonald boasted a better win percentage than any other Corvette racer compiling 47 victories and 69 top three finishes in 110 career starts. He shared the driver’s seat with Dick Thompson in the “Biography of a Sports Car” marketing campaign for the then all new 1963 Stingray. Zora Duntov himself considered MacDonald one of the top two Corvette drivers. When GM left factory-backed racing, MacDonald went to drive for Cobra, but continued to wheel his own 1963 Corvette on the streets. Sadly, he lost his life at the Indy 500 in 1964.

Congratulations to each of the 2014 Corvette Hall of Fame inductees. You can see the class of ’14 formally enshrined on Thursday, August 28th as part of the Museum’s 20th Anniversary Celebration.

[VIDEO] C7 Corvette Stingray Testing at Navak in Serbia
Check out this video that shows Chevrolet testing a trio of C7s – two Torch Reds and a Velocity Yellow – on the Navak track in Belgrad, Serbia.
The Stingray has already been tested on the German Autobahn, where it roared to speeds of 300 km/h, in France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
The 2014 Corvette will be arriving at European dealers soon, and some lucky folks over there will be able to purchase new Stingrays (available only in Z51 form) at a cost of €69,990 in mainland Europe and £61,495 in the United Kingdom.
Since they’re Z51s, that means these cars will deliver 460 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque, figures that pleased the narrator in this video, Patrick Hermann, technical manager communications Chevrolet Europe.
The Z51 package, of course, includes enhanced aero package for optimized high-speed stability, electronic limited-slip differential, specific shocks, springs and stabilizer bars, specific performance gear ratio, dry-sump oiling system, differential and transmission cooling, larger front and rear wheels and tires, and larger front and rear brakes.
“We have so many interesting new developments in the car, like the active differential we have, like the new full electronic steering gear,” Hermann says.
What makes the latest Corvette so special to him, he says, “is that all the little parts coming together in very nice way, like the design, like the new technology, and how they blend together without losing the ideas about a Corvette.”
Hermann points out that the Corvette remains a daily driver but “we have such a sharp car on the track. What I always enjoy is how powerful the car is and how much torque it can deliver and it’s nice to enjoy all the talk when you’re driving on the track and you know how to handle it. But it’s also refined and precise and how all the electronics systems can help you without taking the fun away and the emotions that this car is delivering.”
And driving on the track, Hermann emphasizes, “is pure emotion, and this car is delivering it.”
He likes being able to select the level of support the car can offer the driver.
“And again I can switch it totally off if I’m feeling, ‘OK, I want to be in control from everything,’ and then I’m the driver and I’m totally in control, but as in the case of the limited slip differential, I’m getting all the traction support and I’m enjoying having all the power come out of it.”
