2015 Corvette Z06 to be shown at January's Detroit Auto Show

Well, the moment Corvette enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting is nearly here.

Chevrolet announced today that the 2015 Corvette Z06 will be unveiled to the public in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the same place where the 2014 Corvette Stingray first saw the light of day a year earlier.

Chevy released a photo showing a much larger front fender vent on the Z06 and a partial view of the wheel, but we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see how the complete package looks.

Nevertheless, in a press release, Chevrolet did call the Z06 “the most track-capable Corvette ever, designed to deliver supercar levels of performance through unique powertrain, chassis, and aerodynamic features.”

Interestingly, that same release noted that the 2015 Z06 – slated to enter production in late 2014 – will complete Chevrolet’s performance car lineup that also will include the Corvette Stingray Convertible, Camaro Z/28, and SS sedan.

Does that mean that the Z06 will be the ultimate C7, or will a ZR1 enter the picture later?

Regardless, Chevy can already boast of being America’s favorite performance car brand, according to Alan Batey, senior vice president, Global Chevrolet, “and for 2014 we are going to offer enthusiasts more choices than ever before. No other manufacturer will be able to match the breath of performance cars from Chevrolet.”

Consumers are definitely taking note of the work by Chevrolet’s engineers. The automaker has sold one out of every four performance cars in the U.S. in 2013, with the Corvette and Camaro both leading their segments.

The Corvette – despite seeing production shut down for six months while the assembly plant in Bowling Green switched over to production of the C7 – has seen sales jump 229 percent year-over-year and outsold its closest competitor, the Porsche 911, for the first 11 months of 2013.

Likewise, little brother Camaro also whipped its traditional foe, the Ford Mustang, during the same period, outselling it by 10,000 units in retail sales. That puts the Camaro on track to be the best-selling sports car in America for the fourth straight year.

Chevy expects its performance-car domination to do nothing but increase in 2014 with the first full calendar year of sales of the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan, the first full year of sales of the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible, the arrival of the most track-capable Camaro ever with the Z/28 coming in the second quarter of the year, and the debut of the 2015 Corvette Z06 late in the year.

It’s definitely a good time to be a performance car enthusiast in the United States.

Snake River Corvette Club Honors Founding Member at Memorial Service

The Corvette clan lost an original last month when Larry Utley of Twin Falls, Idaho passed away at age 71.

Larry had organized the Snake River Corvette Club, so after he died on Nov. 1, it was no surprise that Corvettes took up a whole block outside of his memorial service.

“He would have liked that,” his wife Colleen said.

The club met in the early days in Larry’s garage and was formally organized in 2000.

“He had loved Corvettes all his life,” his wife said, noting that it was his dream car, especially his 50th anniversary 2003 model.

But the club wasn’t just all about Corvettes. Larry and other members were actively involved in raising funds for local non-profit organizations, including Coats for Kids and Camp Rainbow Gold.

Larry and Colleen attended many car shows during the past 15 years, so many in fact that she has three thick scrapbooks full of photos as a keepsake.

They also drove their Corvette on Sunday day trips because they couldn’t take long trips because of work.

Like many of us Corvette enthusiasts, Larry enjoyed shining up his car and going to shows.

“He said he didn’t care if he’d win, but he wanted to,” Colleen said.

One such show sticks in her mind, a fundraiser in 2008 to help the small town of Wells, Nev., recover from a devastating earthquake.

While some people saw his gruff exterior, Colleen says her husband of 51 years was really just “a teddy bear on the inside.”

It’s no wonder that Larry loved cars, especially Corvettes, since he ran a Chevron service station and a couple of Union 76 stations in Twin Falls for years before getting into the real estate appraisal business.

NC Couple Keeps it Classic in Restoration of a 1954 Corvette

Isn’t it funny how fate sometimes intervenes for Corvette owners?

Take the case of Tommy and Brenda Loftin of North Carolina, who no doubt are thankful this holiday season that back in 2010, Brenda took a ride one night trying to get their granddaughter to go to sleep and just happened to drive past an open garage door where a 1954 Corvette was beckoning to her, though it was covered with boxes and Christmas stuff.

She stopped and talked to the owner, who eventually asked if she would be interested in buying it.

From that fateful trip began a chain of events that led to a very impressive restoration of this piece of Corvette history by the Loftins.

So impressive, in fact, that the car became one of only 954 Corvettes to earn the prestigious Duntov Mark of Excellence Award from the National Corvette Restorers Society.

Tommy and Brenda look at the restoration process as a giant jigsaw puzzle and say they appreciate the helpful advice of NCRS officials.

“Some Corvette people don’t enjoy NCRS because they are going to tell you everything that’s wrong with your car,” Tommy says, “and people don’t like being told that things aren’t correct. I look at it in the opposite, positive direction – they’re telling me what I need to do to get the car correct.”

The Loftins’ efforts have probably doubled the value of their Corvette, they believe, saying it’s worth around $200,000 thanks to the Duntov award. They had previously earned a Top Flight award with the car, making it at least 94 percent authentic, but the Duntov award ups that figure to 98.5 percent authentic and includes a strenuous performance test.

Tommy expressed his thanks to fellow members of the Plastic Cars Limited Corvette Club of Statesville, the Carolinas chapter of NCRS, and Queen City Corvette Club for their encouragement in pursuing the Duntov certification.

More than 100,000 visitors to the Charlotte Motor Speedway AutoFair had the chance to see the restored car, which was on display Sept. 19-22.
