AutoGuide.com Proclaims Reader's Choice Car of the Year is the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Add yet another win for the popular 2014 Corvette Stingray.

This time, it was the readers of Autoguide.com who voted the seventh-generation Corvette as the Reader’s Choice Car of the Year for 2014.

AutoGuide.com combines thorough tests of every car on the market, with up-to-the-minute information on its news blog, to cover the auto industry from all angles.

“Congratulations to everyone involved with the new Corvette and to the entire Chevrolet team,” said AutoGuide.com Editorial Director Colum Wood. “I’m not the least bit surprised by the results. Whether it’s the new look, improved interior, the iconic name or its 455 hp 6.2-liter V8, the Stingray launched hard in the polls and just continued to race away from the competition.”

Wood said he was “excited at the response this year, from AutoGuide readers and from our vast forum community,” noting that social media played a bigger role than ever “in encouraging interaction, resulting in three times as many responses for this year’s awards poll.”

The win for the Stingray came as no shock to the editors of AutoGuide, who referred to the Corvette as “the ultimate performance bargain and a whole lot more” after testing the car earlier this year.

AutoGuide readers chose the Stingray as Car of the Year from a field of 13 finalists, including top sellers, European luxury sedans, and serious performance machines like the new Porsche Cayman and the Jaguar F-Type.

General Motors dominated the results across the board. The seven different vehicle categories voted on by readers of AutoGuide saw GM take home wins in five of them – including the Stingray also in the Sports Car class, the Chevy Silverado in the Truck of the Year, the Cadillac CTS in the Luxury Car of the Year, and the Cadillac ELR in Green Car of the Year.

[VIDEO] Driving Instructor Brutally Drives His 2014 Corvette Stingray at Sebring

While attending an open track session at Sebring International Raceway on Saturday, I had the opportunity to ride with Larry who was one of the instructors for Chin Motorsports, the organization which hosted the event. Larry was very popular this weekend as he was driving an Arctic White 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 Coupe.

Larry’s previous Corvette was a C6 Corvette Z06 which had participated in over 100 track events. Larry says of all the Corvette Stingray Z51s built, hardly any of the owners will really “drive” the car to its limits on the track, which he thought was “just a shame” since it’s on the track where the 7th generation Corvette really shows its true high performance nature.

Larry drove his Corvette hard, diving into corners and allowing that 465 lb-ft torque from the LT1 to power down the straights. The Corvette had nearly 5,000 miles on the odometer and still has its stock Michelin tires and brakes. The Corvette was set up in the Sport driving mode with traction control off and our speeds reached upwards of 140 mph on the long back stretch before turn 17.

Things did get a bit interesting during the third lap around the track when your’s truly was blackflagged for “holding my arm out the window and taking pictures with a handheld camera” but you’ll see in the video that it never happened. We came into the pits and Larry diplomatically suggested to the track official that if I gave her my GoPro to hold, could we do another another lap and she agreed. Nice save, Larry!

The event by Chin Motorsports is a great way to get your Corvette on the track to experience its true performance. Check out their 2014 Schedule as they drive on tracks all across the country.

All in all, the the C7 Corvette Stingray is an incredible machine. The Active Rev Matching was really incredible and proved its full worth on the track. A big thanks again to Larry for the letting me experience a great car being driven on a racetrack by a fantastic driver!

C6 Corvette Driver Shot and Killed after Leading LA Police in Hour Long Chase

Police have identified the driver of a C6 Corvette involved in an hour-long high-speed chase in Los Angeles Friday night as 51-year-old Brian Newt Beaird of Oceanside, Calif.

Beaird was behind the wheel of the silver Corvette in Cudahy in east LA about 9:30 p.m. Friday when L.A. County sheriff’s deputies tried to stop him because he was driving recklessly.

After leading lawmen on a high-speed and dangerous pursuit through the Huntington Park and USC area, Beaird, who was targeted by police for suspected drunk driving, finally crashed his Corvette into another vehicle at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Los Angeles Street in downtown Los Angeles. He climbed out of the Corvette and was shot multiple times by police as he apparently attempted to flee.

As the shooting unfolded, TV news choppers hovering above the scene captured the action live as Beaird maneuvered the Corvette down the street with police in hot pursuit, sometimes driving without his lights on and often “just driving in circles,” according to Sky9 reporter Meghan Reyes.

Even a spike strip thrown on the road by police at one point didn’t seem to affect the Corvette, which more than likely still had run-flat tires that are designed to be useable for several miles after a blowout.

The chase finally came to an end when the Corvette rammed violently into the back of another vehicle trying to pass through an intersection from the other side and the Corvette spun around, winding up against a utility pole nearby. With smoke or steam pouring from under the hood of his badly damaged car, Beaird at first tried to pull forward, then went backward before climbing out of the car and being shot by police as he attempted to flee the scene on foot.

The Corvette, by the way, had a handicapped license plate on the back.

Melanie Woodrow, reporting for CBS2, said at the scene paramedics could be seen doing “vigorous” chest compressions on the suspect, but Beaird was pronounced dead at California Hospital Medical Center at about 11:13 p.m. Friday, according to Los Angeles coroner’s Capt. John Kades.

LAPD Officer Gregory Baek said the apparent shooting is being investigated.

Media reports have not identified the two occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision, nor his condition.

Here is unedited video from the chase which shows the crash and then the suspect is shot by police. The crash happens around 20:35.
