Last Chance to Order a Cyber Gray Corvette Stingray

Last Chance to Order a Cyber Gray Corvette Stingray

Article contributed by Dave Salvatore / Kerbeck Corvette

Cyber Gray has been a part of two major launches with Corvette. Back in 2008 the Corvette community got its first look at Cyber Gray when Chevrolet previewed the 2009 Corvette ZR1 in Jetstream Blue and an all new color, Cyber Gray Metallic.

Again, when Chevrolet wanted to introduce a new model, the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray, they went to Torch Red and and then brought back Cyber Gray.

During its run from 2009 through 2013 Cyber Gray was a very popular color, usually being in the top 3 colors. After using it in the launch of the C7 Corvette in 2014, Chevrolet has decided to retire the color and replace it with a new color, Shark Gray for the 2015 model year. Shark Gray is being used to preview the all new 2015 Corvette Z06.

As is usual when a color is being discontinued, Chevrolet will have an “early build out” for Cyber Gray. That means they will stop building the color sooner than the rest of the model year. The reason for that is so that they do not run into a situation where the assembly plant or their suppliers run out of the color or have paint or pre painted parts left over.

With that in mind, GM announced that this week’s order cycle (cars ordered from 04/24/14 through 04/29/14) will be the last opportunity to order Cyber Gray 2014 Corvette Stingrays. While Kerbeck Corvette has ordered extra cars in that color to make it through the end of the model year, this will be the last chance to place your own custom order for a Cyber Gray Stingray.

In the past, when a color is in the last week of ordering due to an early build out, the color was constrained and not all orders could be placed. So, if you want to attempt to order a Cyber Gray Stingray coupe or convertible contact Dave Salvatore at Kerbeck Corvette as soon as possible. Orders and deposit would have to be received by Tuesday 04/29/14 to have a chance of being accepted.

The Evolution of the New Bright Toys Corvette Stingray

The Evolution of the New Bright Toys Corvette Stingray

New Bright Toys has always been known for its highly detailed cars. Over the years, the designs have gotten more and more thorough. An example of this is how the Corvette Stingray has evolved from the 1963 model to the 2014 model. In 1986, New Bright Toys released the 1963 Corvette Stingray.

The 1986 version of the 1963 Corvette Stingray was connected to the remote and took C batteries. This car included flip-up headlights, a switch on the controller that turns on the lights, and forward/reverse functionality. The body was very detailed and the interior looked very lifelike compared to the original vehicle.

The Evolution of the New Bright Toys Corvette Stingray

As the years go on, technology evolves and so does the car industry. The new 2014 Corvette Stingray not only has a wireless controller that takes double A batteries, but features a detailed interior, LED working lights for both the interior and exterior, and lifelike sounds. With its authentic presence, the New Bright Corvette Stingray has come a long way from its time in 1986.

Only time will tell what features and upgrades New Bright Toys will make to the Corvette brand toy, so you better keep an eye out for what comes next!

A special event for the veterans of the United States Armed Forces brought Corvettes and Vets together for the first annual Vettes for Veterans. This was a very humble show that offered a nice break from the major auto industry shows like the 2013 SEMA show — it almost every way, the Vettes for Veterans show on November 9th was the exact opposite of the major industry auto shows of 2013.

Across from the Carlsbad Outlets in California, quite the site could be seen in the TGI Friday’s parking lot. A large variety of Corvettes took over the venue and every generation of Corvette was there to impress.

This awesome display of evolution featured a Corvette of every generation in one line. It’s amazing to see the beginning-to-current Corvette heritage all in one lineup like this.

Elsewhere, lines of mixed generations could be seen living in harmony — like these C4s showing off what’s under the hood next to a powerful C6 Vette.

The C7 Corvette Stingray – A Porsche Killer from Detroit?

The C7 Corvette Stingray - A Porsche Killer from Detroit?

CNN Money is raving about the new Corvette as an American car that can take down the Porsche. Is the CNN author’s perspective accurate? Let’s quickly examine the validity of the claims.

Price Comparison

It’s not fair to compare the Porsche to the Stingray without making mention of the price point. Knowing what kind of pricing you’re dealing with will help put everything into perspective as far as value is concerned.

The most popular Porsche model, the 911 Carerra, has an MSRP of about $84,000, and according to TrueCar.com the average purchase price comes in at around $80,554. This is the base-model Carerra, which may or may not be available at your local Porsche dealer (often times dealers only stock higher-end models). Thus, the best price you’ll get is $80k…and many people pay a lot more.

2013 Porsche 911

Similarly, the website also notes that the factory invoice for the Stingray is $48,425 with a $51,995 MSRP. There’s no known information available yet about the average price a consumer pays in real life purchases since this model has just now made its way to dealerships. There are rumors of dealers marking up new Vette’s $5-10k.

Still, even with a $10k addendum, the new Stingray wins the price comparison.

Power Comparison

Now for the most notable factor about sports cars — how much power they have! For most people, that’s all that really matters.

Horsepower side by side comparisons reveal that when it come to brut strength, the Stingray is the clear winner. While the 911 Carrera has a 3.8L engine that pushes an impressive 350 horsepower — the Stingray touts a much better 455 horsepower (460 hp with performance exhaust option).

What does this translate into in the real world? The Porsche 911 Carrera has a 0-60 of 4.3 seconds according to the Porsche website, and a 2012 Carrera S tested by Motor Trend ran the quarter mile in 12 seconds flat. Chevy’s Corvette Stingray has times of 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and runs the quarter mile in 12 seconds as well. As you can see, the times are very close and would likely even come down to driver skill in real life situations.

2014 Corvette Stingray

Of course, Porsche loyalists will argue that the mid-engine 911 is a better track car. While the 911 isn’t really a mid-engine racer, it remains to be seen how well the 911 and Stingray will compete on the race course. Regardless, a $52k Corvette can run neck and neck with a $98k Porsche Carrera S, which means any new Vette buyer has $40k sitting around for performance add-ons. If even half that sum is spent on go-fast parts, there’s no contest between the two vehicles.

Which Model Wins The Image Contest?

The Corvette Stingray is the winner for pricing, and essentially the winner for performance as well once you start using your “extra” money to invest in performance add-ons. Yet the “image” contest is one area where the Porsche has a definite advantage.

American drivers have a love/hate relationship with the Porsche, but the brand has an extremely loyal following. Many Porsche drivers consider themselves to be lifers, the vehicle is associated with status and wealth, the cars are often portrayed in movies, etc. If you ask the average person on the street, odds are good that the Porsche brand will be viewed as “cool”, and that drivers of said car will be viewed as successful (and perhaps pretentious as well).

The Corvette, on the other hand, is anything but pretentious…and perhaps that’s the problem. The Vette is stylish and powerful, but it’s status as a sports car for “everyman” might hurt it’s cool factor in some eyes. In a society where excess is rewarded, it’s hard for a value-priced super car to get it’s due.

Still, the fact is that the newest Corvette model has people going crazy. Popular media outlets (like CNN) have been talking about the car, as have all the major automotive outlets. What’s more, GM has made a real effort to shed the image of the “middle-aged guy’s sports car” with the Stingray – something I wrote about here.

2014 Corvette Stingray Interior

Is the new Stingray really a “Porsche killer from Detroit” like the CNN writer explains? Probably not. Despite the Vette’s performance, (relative) affordability, and burgeoning cool factor, the Porsche brand is strong. It’s not as if all those “upside-down bathtub” fans are going to stop loving the speedster from Stuttgart.

Still, the real answer lies in the numbers. If the Corvette can double or triple the sales volume of the Porsche 911, an argument for the Vette’s superior image can be made. Here’s to hoping.

[PICS] The Corvette Hobby Comes Together for the 7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

The Corvette Hobby Comes Together for the 7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

Article contributed by Lance Miller / Corvettes at Carlisle / Chip Miller Charitable Foundation

The Corvette hobby lost an amazing person in 2004. My father, Chip Miller passed away from a rare disease called amyloidosis. Shortly after his passing, my family and I decided to start the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation (CMCF) in his honor and to raise awareness of this terrible disease.

The Corvette hobby was and continues to be the driving force behind the efforts and mission of the CMCF. My father was not only a wonderful person; he was also a best friend and mentor to me and many of my friends. His loss affected me in many ways, but most importantly to follow his mantra of “Life is good!” He was an incredibly positive, caring and generous person and his passing made me realize just how precious every minute really is and to enjoy the time we have on this earth.

In 2005 during Corvettes at Carlisle I wanted to do something different for Chip’s Choice that would honor not only my father but the parent and child relationship. That year we featured Parent / Child relationships through Corvette ownership. Many of the stories were extremely emotional and brought tears to my eyes; some were fun and entertaining and would make you smile from ear to ear. One submission included Andy Rumford and his son, both who came to Corvettes at Carlisle that year. Andy mentioned that he would like to start an event in honor of my father and to help raise money and awareness for amyloidosis. Immediately the CMCF board provided the green light and Andy along with Michael Crank jumped into creating the annual event dubbed Corvettes for Chip. Obviously it takes more than a couple people to facilitate and run a Corvette fundraising event, so Andy and Michael quickly secured various local Corvette club members to help with the effort. After seven years, the event continues to thrive and brings in many smiles along with some incredible Corvettes which of course helps to generate much needed donations for the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation.

7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

The event was held for the first time at Thomas Chevrolet in Media, PA. Beautiful weather, an outstanding location and a vast array of incredible Corvettes helped to make this year’s Corvettes for Chip an exceptional event. The Best of Show went to Pat Lamerton and his beautiful ’64 Corvette! Each year the committee asks me to pick my favorite Corvette on the field. This year I chose a ’69 Corvette owned by Frank Andalora with Delaware Valley NCRS. Frank knew my father and they would travel to various Corvette events and challenge one another on the show circuit with their ’69 Corvettes. One weekend my father’s ’69 would win, the next weekend Frank’s would win. Frank and my father quickly realized it wasn’t the competition that kept them coming back, it was the friendship. Frank spoke about the many lasting friendships he created through his ‘69 Corvette. When all is said and done, that’s what our hobby is all about… the people and friendships that are formed.

I must also mention the many tasty baked goods at the event for sale as well. In fact, I scored some of the tastiest brownies I’ve had in a long time (sorry Michele). The majority of the baked goods came from the Williams family whose father/husband has amyloidosis and has been supporting Corvettes for Chip for the past several years. There were also some amazing auction items and a 50/50 raffle.

7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

After the awards presentation, I introduced Michelle Major, who shared her heartfelt story about her late husband’s battle with amyloidosis. Her husband was misdiagnosed for over a year, and of course, like my father, when they finally diagnosed him with amyloidosis, the disease was too far gone for effective treatment. Her courage and determination throughout their ordeal helped remind me just how important it is to continue our fight against this deadly disease.

Wrapping up the days’ festivities included a drawing for a freshly delivered 2014 Stingray Corvette. I had the honor to pull the winning ticket from the County Corvette Associations sold out and extremely successful raffle. Rocky Crisconi, a member of Corvette Club of Northern Delaware, ran up to the car and got on his knees and kissed the front of his new 2014 Corvette when his name was called over the microphone. What a wonderful way to end a great day!

If you weren’t able to make the event and would like to contribute towards the CMCF, please feel free visiting: http://chipmiller.org. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

From the bottom of my heart I’d like to thank all of the sponsors, participants, attendees and especially each of the volunteers that make this event what it has become! It means the world to my family and the CMCF board members knowing my father is still making a positive impact even ten years after his passing.

As my best friend would always say… LIFE IS GOOD!

On a side note, Andy Rumford (co-founder of Corvettes for Chip) never met my father and simply wanted to do something nice to help a son that was grieving because his father passed away way too early. He wanted to help us spread the word about this terrible disease. Losing a father or mother is incredibly difficult, however, losing a son or daughter is more difficult. In fact, it’s something I can’t even fathom and something I hope never happens. This past year Andy and his wife lost their daughter Kacie who passed away from a heroin overdose. Promptly following her passing the Rumford family started Kacie’s Cause (more information can be found by visiting http://www.kaciescause.com/). Please visit the website and take some time to learn about this terrible problem that’s occurring more and more frequently. Andy and his family would like to help other families recognize the tragic consequences of heroin and the addictions it may cause.

[PICS] Surf, Sand and Corvettes - Life is Good in Ocean City, NJ

Article contributed by Lance Miller / Corvettes at Carlisle

Nothing like coming back to the area you call home especially when the Boardwalk Corvette Club of Atlantic City is hosting their annual Corvette event right on the Boardwalk of Ocean City, NJ. Yes, that day, you can actually drive your Corvette on to the Boardwalk, park, and enjoy the magnificent scenery, the most delicious food, the people and of course the Corvettes.

I was honored to lead this parade of more than 400 Corvettes, in the iconic 1960 Cunningham LeMans #3 Corvette. I love driving this Corvette and my ear to ear smile always shows it. What made me even happier was the smile I saw from my 12 year old co-driver who paraded with me from the airport to the boardwalk. The event is much more relaxed than most events you attend throughout the year. Corvettes of all colors and years line up at the Ocean City airport prior to departing at 11am towards the boardwalk. Promptly after the drivers meeting, the police escort the long chain of Corvettes through the beautiful city and bring the cars up along the famous boardwalk at 14th Street where you’re greeted with hundreds of smiling faces.

I was parked in a designated space in front of the Music Pier near 8th Street along with Eric Reich’s ’63 Corvette that was owned by his Aunt since new and has over 400,000 miles on the odometer. Of course the event wouldn’t be complete without a freshly delivered Stingray Corvette. Kerbeck Chevrolet was kind enough to bring the all new Stingray for the day of festivities. And it drew quite a crowd.

This event is one of my favorite shows with some of the most wonderful people. But then again I may be just a bit biased since this is the place I’ve called home since I moved here in seventh grade and spent just about as many days surfing as in the classroom. My wife still doesn’t understand how I was able to graduate.

Special this year was the showing of the Quest documentary following the boardwalk show to benefit the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation and a sand sculpting of the new C7 Stingray and the #3 LeMans Corvette. Corey Korpita, an amazing artist and car enthusiast worked diligently on the sculptures for 4 days (and sometimes nights). My wife, Michele, used to work with Corey and they kept in touch over the years. After seeing a photo of Corey’s sculpture of the new C7 he created and posted on Facebook, I reposted to Corvettes at Carlisle and the photograph spread throughout the Corvette community quickly. Michele reached out to Corey to see if he’d be willing to sculpt another one, plus the LeMans Corvette during the Boardwalk event. Corey jumped on board immediately, lucky for us!

[PICS] Surf, Sand and Corvettes - Life is Good in Ocean City, NJ

There was a continuous line of people taking pictures and asking questions, yet he and his family would constantly work hard to complete the project at hand. The final result blew me away! Besides from being a great person with a wonderful family, he made a lasting impact during the event – everyone including myself was raving about the sculptures throughout the weekend.

Announcements were made throughout the day by Kathy Nolan and Michael Brown informing everyone that the Quest documentary would be playing at the Music Pier following the Corvette show. Legendary board shaper, Brian Wynn, shaped a marvelous longboard that resembled the ’60 Cunningham Corvette; the longboard was used to help generate more proceeds for the CMCF and did just that!

The Quest documentary started at 6pm and promptly after was a meet and greet with Michael Brown, Kevin Mackay, Bill Miller and myself. This evening event proved to be quite intimate and just as magical as the day festivities, from the beautiful sunset hovering over the sand sculptures to the friendships that were formed throughout the day. If you haven’t watched the Quest, I’d highly recommend you consider purchasing yourself a copy of the film, you can buy it directly from this website: http://www.questdocumentary.com.

On a final note, Ocean City, NJ truly is “America’s Greatest Family Resort”. The Corvette community is truly one big family, from the families sitting on the sideline looking at all the Corvettes to the family and friends that just happened to be visiting this awesome community and were able to see some amazing rides – everyone had an enjoyable day and evening! This is one event you won’t want to miss, be sure to put it on your calendars for next year!

Special thanks to the following:

  • City of Ocean City, NJ going above and beyond in every capacity
  • Boardwalk Corvette Club of Atlantic City for hosting such a fun filled event
  • Michael Brown – director and producer of The Quest documentary
  • Corvette Repair, Kevin Mackay and team – special thanks for bringing down the Cunningham Corvette and attending the event
  • Corey Korpita and family – making dreams happen in the sand
  • Bryan Wynn – great longboard
  • Nick Bricker and family – thanks for brainstorming and implementing the logistics of the event
  • Dunleavy Matching Missions team – thanks for continually helping the CMCF
  • All the participants – you made one memorable event!

I hope to see everyone next weekend on Sunday September 29th during the 7th Annual Corvettes for Chip event! This event will be held at an all new location in Media, PA at Thomas Chevrolet. You can expect to see some amazing Corvettes along with plenty of incredible auction items on display throughout the day. All net proceeds to this event benefit the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation. I’m incredibly thankful for the Corvette hobby continually coming together to help us make a difference. The mission of the CMCF is to empower people with the knowledge and understanding of amyloidosis for earlier detection, ensuring a better quality of life for those afflicted with the disease and to help science find the cures.
