Corvettes on eBay: 1954 EX87 Corvette Test Mule Replica
Here’s a fun Corvette that we wouldn’t mind having parked under our Christmas tree. This 1954 model is currently for sale on EBay. The white on red roadster is a tribute to the famous 1955 Duntov EX87 test mule that ran 163mph in 1955.
The original EX87 Duntov test mule was fitted with a V8 engine in 1954 by racing legend Smokey Yunich. From there it was given to Zora Arkus Duntov to be prepped for speed record runs at Daytona. Modifications installed by Zora included a small Plexiglas windshield, a fiberglass tonneau cover over the passenger seat, and a headrest-tailfin for high speed stability. In addition, the Yunich-installed engine was punched out to 307ci from 283. EX87 was the first car to be fitted with what would come to be known as the Duntov camshaft. Shortly after all the modifications were complete Duntov achieved his goal by getting the car to run 163mph at GM’s Arizona Proving Grounds and 150.583 at Daytona.
The 1954 EX87 replica shown here is currently listed for sale on the UK EBay. According to the listing the car sat for over 20 years in Texas. Over that period of time the engine and transmission were both stolen and the rest of the car was left behind. Seeing an excellent starting point for a project the owners installed a 327ci engine with fuelie heads backed by a T-10 4-speed transmission from a 1959 Corvette. Modern technology makes an appearance in the form of a 200 watt stereo with an I-pod input. The owner states that they drove to car to Lemans and back last June and we bet it’s a blast to drive. Overall, the car has travelled less than 900 miles since the frame off restoration was completed.
Like the original, the replica is finished in gleaming white paint and a bright red interior. Missing is the short windshield, tonneau cover, headlight covers, and fin behind the driver’s seat. The exhaust exits through its standard location compared to the side exit on the real EX87. All of these omitted items surely make it more suitable for street use.
The original EX-87 last sold at Mecum’s Spring Classic in 2009 for $310,000 and is resting peacefully in the Lingenfelter Collection. The tribute car won’t set you back nearly that amount. The UK asking price is £59,995. That translates into roughly $78,000 US which is pretty stout for a 2nd year Corvette especially when you factor in the expense to bring it back to this side of the pond.

Cranky Writer Includes Corvettes in List of Worst Cars!
Edmunds Auto Online published a piece by John Pearley Huffman today, entitled One Hundred Worst Cars of All Time. There are cars on that list that I imagine any auto aficionado would include on his or her list. And then there are cars on that list that some would fight to have removed. It is, after all, one man’s opinion.
Let’s start with the cars we agree should be on the reject list. I am wholeheartedly in agreement with the following vehicles being on the worst list: 2001 Aztec (although I might not make it the very worst, as did Huffman!), 1988 Eagle Premier (I have personal experience on this one) / Dodge Monaco, 1999 Daewoo Nubira, 1993 Ford Aspire, 1985 Hyundai Excel, 2008 Smart Fortwo, 1976 Chevy Chevette (more personal experience), 1973 Datsun B210, 1976 Dodge Aspen / Plymouth Volare, 1975 AMC Pacer (the "first wide car"), 1970 AMC Gremlin, 1971 Pinto, 1983 Renault Alliance (Motor Trend‘s "Car of the Year"), 1987 Yugo, and the 1974 Mustang II.
These cars are also on his list, but I would reject their inclusion: 1953 Corvette (pictured above), 1957 Renault Dauphine, 2003 Chevy SSR, 1975 Corvette, and the 2007 Chevy Malibu Maxx. The "He Said / We Say" follows after the jump.
Of the 1953 Corvette, Huffman says, "A fiberglass body, atop an archaic chassis, powered by a lame 155-hp six. And the transmission was a two-speed. The first Corvette was crap." I told you he was cranky! We say, Yes, it was underwhelming, but it was the birth of a dream that took just a few years to become America’s sweetheart sports car. Without the 1953, there may never have been a 1955 to receive the power and the development!
Of the 1957 Dauphine: "The rear-engine, 32-hp Dauphine made VW’s Beetle seem quick." True, but this was one of the first "cute" imports, and like the Beetle (where, once again, I have experience), although there was no engine under the hood, there was an "extra" in the trunk!
Of the 2003 SSR, he wrote: "Spoiled by its ridiculously heavy retractable hardtop and underwhelming TrailBlazer chassis. It could have been great; instead it was grating." I just followed one to work Tuesday morning, enjoying the view all the way. It was an attractive, customized hot rod – and with full factory warranty! I still want one.
Concerning the 1975 Corvette: "Base power … was the ZQ3 350-cubic-inch V8 rated at – ACK! – 165-hp. The optional L82 version of the 350 only wheezed out 205 horses. An abomination." I say that this "utter undesirability" must be why only 38,000 were sold! That was a lot os sports car then! Sure, it was the low point of Corvette power, but blame Jimmy Carter, not Chevrolet!
The 2007 Chevy Malibu Maxx is accused of being "kind of a station wagon, but with less utility and style. The worst car ever built to wear Chevy’s "SS" name." I say: at least it had some oomph. And, frankly, when I had mine, I loved the utility of it. I was disappointed they didn’t include this option with the next-generation Malibu!

Corvette Community Loses Friend with Passing of Jeff Hardy
The Corvette community lost a good friend last week. Jeff Hardy, the man who created the simple yet wildly popular Corvette locater service passed away on Wednesday, December 7th after battling an undisclosed illness for some time. For us, his website provided more than just the ability to find specific Corvettes, it provided us with a running narrative of how Corvettes were selling.
Jeff’s wife sent an email to Corvette Forum member “Corvette ED” who posted the note in the C6 Forum:
“It is with a sad heart that I have to inform you that Jeff passed away late Wednesday night Dec 7th 2011. To say that Jeff loved this Corvette site and especially its followers is an understatment. Thank You for supporting my husband and making him feel alive!!”
Jeff’s website allowed buyers to search for specific Corvettes based on model and options vs the GM Buypower website which limited lookups only to dealers in your surrounding area. So if you were looking for a Torch Red automatic Grand Sport with Chrome Aluminum wheels, Jeff’s site would search the nation and then display which dealers had the cars that matched your queries. You could even look at the window sticker.
To show their appreciation, some friends have set up a memorial fund in his name at the National Corvette Museum where he will be honored with a Brick. If you would like to make a donation to the Jeff Hardy Memorial, call the NCM at 270-467-8836 or click here for the online form.
We never had the opportunity to meet Jeff and that’s a shame because his website was a powerful tool that we used each and every month to gauge Corvette’s strength or weakness in the marketplace. We appreciated his dedication to Corvettes and offer his family our sincere condolences.
As one forum member stated, “sad news, his simple layout design website made many dreams come true. RIP friend.
