The doors opened today in Frankfurt, Germany for the 64th International Motor Show and the halo car of the Chevrolet brand is well represented. Celebrating its 100 year anniversary, Chevy’s display offers a glimpse of past, present and future models in the Chevrolet lineup.

Visitors will be able to see the new 2012 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible Centennial Edition and a red Corvette ZR1. The Grand Sport is located on display along with the Miray Concept and the Chevy Volt. Racing fans will get to view the #73 Corvette C6.R that won its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Finally, as part of its nostalgic look back at classic Chevy’s, a black C1 Corvette roadster is parked next to a Bel Air and a Master Deluxe Pickup truck in Chevrolet’s Iconic Models display.

Like the SEMA show last November, a real Corvette engine will be assembled during the press days to showcase the Corvette Engine Build Experience.

Here are some photos showing the Corvettes on display at the 2011 International Motor Show in Frankfurt:

One of the more interesting differences I have found in the marketing of Chevrolet domestically compared to Chevrolet Europe is the tag line. I guess Chevy’s don’t run deep across the pond, so in Europe that tag line is changed to “Make It Happen”!

Corvettes on eBay: 1977 Rat Rod Custom Corvette Pickup

Corvettes on eBay: 1977 Rat Rod Custom Corvette Pickup

We wish we could say no Corvettes were harmed in the making of this rat rod but this does appear to be another case of when customizing goes too far. For sale on eBay is a 1977 Corvette with the front end from 1939 Plymouth pickup. I remember seeing this Corvette a year or two ago on Jalopnik and the reaction I had then of being horrified while at the same time impressed with the time and workmanship that went into creating such a beast returned. This custom rat rod is back on eBay and now you have the opportunity to own this unique mashup of American performance and down-on-the-farm ingenuity.

The Corvette drives well according to the seller named David. He says he just drove it over 800 miles to a car show in Tennessee. The car is powered by a 350 V8 and has an automatic transmission and 4 wheel disc brakes. However, there are a few things not working like the speedo and tach and the windshield has a crack (currently covered by duct tape). Inside, you’ll find road signs have been fabricated for the door panels and deer antlers provide the handle to pull the doors close.

Here are some photos of the 1939/1977 Corvette Rat Rod:

The custom Corvette is for sale on eBay with the auction closing in a little over four days. Shocking us even more is the fact that the rat rod has 8 bids. The current bid is for $3,050.00 and reserve has yet to me met.

We found the posting on Digital Corvette and the comments from forum are pretty entertaining as well. In the words of one commenter, “it’s got to be drugs, cause nobody can drink that much beer”.

Corvette Auction Preview: Mecum at St. Charles

Article contributed by Steve Burns

As the 2011 Corvette shopping season starts to wind down, Mecum Auctions rolls into St. Charles, IL this weekend for their end of summer sale. The four day event will be held at the Pheasant Run Resort about an hour west of Chicago starting Thursday September 15th and running through Sunday September 18th. You can watch all the action live on Mecum’s website or check out 14 hours of coverage on Discovery HD Theater. Click past the jump to see some of the Corvettes available this weekend.

As of this writing there are 588 cars on the St. Charles docket. Of those, 72 are Corvettes. As usual cars from all generations are available with C3’s making up roughly half of the offerings. Bidders will have a shot at several resto mods, some nice straight axle cars, as well as a couple of cars formerly of the Bob McDorman Collection. The current breakdown is as follows:

GENERATION QUANTITY
C1 Corvette 6
C2 Corvette 11
C3 Corvette 37
C4 Corvette 13
C5 Corvette 2
C6 Corvette 3

Here’s a trio of vettes to keep your eyes on this weekend.

Lot #S136 1955 Corvette Roadster:
Completely unrestored and “barn fresh”, this rare Copper 1955 Corvette still wears its original paint and interior. Just 15 cars sported the new Copper paint in 1955. According to the seller, the car has been stored since 1966 and mileage is listed at 49,856. Barn finds and Survivor-type cars are very popular right now. This should draw lots of interest as it begs the question: Restore it or not?

Lot #F122 1987 Callaway Corvette:
This early example of RPO B2K has run just 27,000 miles since new. That converts to 108,000 trips down the drag strip although this one doesn’t appear to have been raced. The two-tone gray and black car is number 6 of 188 assembled that year and has had just 2 owners since new. Original MSRP was $52,942. Savvy bidders will pay much less than that for this one when it crosses the block on Friday.

Lot #F180 1996 Grand Sport Convertible:

As the fourth generation Corvette said good-bye, we said hello once again to the Grand Sport. The convertible featured here has the standard issue 330hp LT4 and 6 speed transmission. What makes this C4 unique is its bright red interior. Approximately 53 of the 190 GS convertibles came with red guts. The Grand Sports have experienced a nice jump in collectability over the last few years. The condition and rarity of GS #923 should provide some active bidding come Friday at 5:10pm.
