Dubai loves to put on a big show. Just witness the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, that reaches an amazing 2,722 feet into the sky over there.

But buildings aren’t the only things that Dubai loves to show off.

The Dubai Civil Defense has just upgraded to the fluorescent yellow 2014 Corvette Stingray that’s shown in this photo. With all the decals and the bright paint, it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind look for Chevy’s seventh-generation sports car.

Previously, Dubai had a C6 Corvette of a similar color with a huge wing and light bar that, believe it or not, was a fully functional emergency vehicle.

With the new Stingray just getting on the streets in the past few weeks, Dubai certainly didn’t waste any time switching over to the C7. We tried to get more information about the car on Dubai’s official website, but we couldn’t gain access to a private video posted there.

If you happened to be at the recent 2013 Dubai Air Show, the Stingray was parked there along with other Dubai Police supercars in the outdoor display part of the show.

No word on whether the C7 has the same functional mods that the C6 had, but the huge spoiler is definitely missing from the back of the Stingray, at least so far. Maybe it’s on constraint?

We do hear that the Fire Brigade uses the Stingray to get to fires or accidents faster with first aid and other emergency equipment. Kids always love seeing shiny red fire trucks, and we’re sure they are even more excited about seeing a fluorescent yellow Stingray!

NYT C7 Review: Exotic Performance, Friendlier Disposition

From The New York Times, Nov. 15, 2013

… After spending some quality time sliding around the Black Lake testing area at General Motors’ proving ground in Milford, Mich., I concluded that buying a ’Vette without the Z51 package would be like getting a puppy without a leash. If you spend a little bit more for a leash, you’re going to have a lot better control of that puppy, right?

And the Z51 package is a bargain. For $2,800 you get performance gearing, a transmission and differential cooler, bigger wheels and tires, bigger brakes, a firmer suspension, the dry-sump oil system and the pièce de résistance, that magic differential.

Automobile Magazine Names 2014 Corvette Stingray its Car of the Year

Yet another prestigious award for the seventh-generation Corvette has come Chevy’s way.

The 2014 Stingray has been named Automobile Magazine’s Car of the Year, and its chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, has been named the magazine’s Man of the Year.

Not a bad day’s work for the 61-year-old sports car from General Motors and its dedicated team of engineers.

As the magazine concludes: “The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is a world-class car with no apologies to make, an expression of greatness from a town and a car company that have been dismissed as losers.”

Unlike the conservative C6, Automobile praises Juechter and his team for reaching into exciting new territory with the C7.

“This is a thorough redesign, and it starts with a new frame” made out of aluminum, much stronger and lighter than the C6′s, the magazine says.

Praising the Stingray for its “simply awesome” performance, Automobile notes that Chevy wasn’t just aiming for some arbitrary number with the new car’s horsepower. “The point was to smoke tires, roar out of turns, and storm down the straights – oh, and do all that without quaffing unleaded,” the magazine says. “As it turns out, this new 6.2-liter proves to be highly effective at all those things.”

Power to the people might be a good slogan for the new Stingray. Automobile praises the Corvette as a “democratic sports car” that, despite offering tons of sophisticated technology, doesn’t emerge as “a cold, technocratic machine.”

Of course, the newly upgraded interior draws kudos from the magazine.

“Your interaction with the C7 is as straightforward as a handshake,” Automobile says. “The ergonomics feel right; the switchgear is clear and functional; you can see out of the cabin; and the seats hold you comfortably in place. Yes, the Corvette really does have decent seats — and we haven’t even tried the optional competition buckets. It also has an interior worthy of a $50,000-plus sports car. The materials look and feel good, and the interfaces manage to be modern yet not gimmicky, a concept that more and more carmakers are finding elusive these days.”

Automobile points out that the new Stingray was conceived and nurtured at a time when General Motors was going through its lowest times.

“Given the circumstances, we might not have expected a great new Corvette, but that’s exactly what we got,” the magazine says.

And because of that, they believe the Corvette will appeal not just to the faithful but will also “spread the gospel” to a whole new audience of driving enthusiasts.

C7 Stingray Earns Car of Year Honors From Automobile Magazine

News from Automobile Magazine, Nov. 17, 2013

Yes, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette is the Automobile of the Year. No, this was not a foregone conclusion. The Corvette may have a special place in the American automotive pantheon, but not every new Corvette has been a big deal.

The C6, for example, was a conservative effort, a safe play that didn’t reach. The new C7, though, is something else. This is a thorough redesign, and it starts with a new frame. Switching from steel to aluminum (previously only Z06 and ZR1 models used an aluminum frame), the C7’s frame structure is nearly 100 pounds lighter than the C6’s and considerably stiffer. The front and rear cradles — both aluminum — are also lighter and stiffer.

The lift-off top remains, but it’s carbon fiber (as is the hood). The V-8’s 6.2-liter displacement is the same as before, but this is an all-new engine, backed by a new seven-speed manual transmission. There’s newfound sophistication in the chassis and an interior that makes no excuses to anyone.
