Brought back from the dead, this 1964 Corvette is ready to rock into the night for many years to come.

When Rick Thompson found the Sting Ray in 1988, the red beauty was a far cry from its current appearance. In fact, it was sitting neglected in an IRS impound lot and had even partially damaged by a fire. There was even a hole in the floorboard that had been “repaired” with license plates after an axle half-shaft had penetrated through it.

Not to worry, though, as Thompson lovingly brought the car back to better than new over the years, including the addition of a 383 inch V8 engine he built and has since maneuvered to quarter-mile times of 12.8 seconds.

This resto-mod also features a custom suspension that has improved the handling tremendously, and Thompson also added air conditioning and a six-speed transmission.

The car would be nice enough to speak on its own, but the story turns even more interesting when you hear that the ‘Vette once belonged to the drummer for the popular Southern rockers .38 Special, a fellow named Jack Grondin. Thompson didn’t know about the celebrity connection until years after he bought the Corvette, when his brother did some research and they found some photos in the car.

Ironically, one of .38 Special’s biggest hits was a tune called Rockin Into the Night, which featured the lyrics “Cruising down the motorway, got my girl by my side.”
Fitting words, indeed, since Thompson now carries his “girl,” his wife Rita, as they cruised all last summer in their Corvette.

2014 Corvette Stingray Leads New Canadian Performance Car of the Year Vote

2014 Corvette Stingray Leads New Canadian Performance Car of the Year Vote

The 2014 Corvette Stingray continues to leave the competition in its rearview mirror, even in Canada.

After exhaustive testing by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, the Stingray emerged as the “Best new Sports / Performance” car in the annual Canadian Car of the Year awards – leading the runner-up by some eight points.

The Stingray beat out several impressive foreign competitors, including the new Porsche Cayman, BMW 4-Series Coupe, Mercedes E63 AMG, Mercedes E 350 Coupe, and Jaguar F-Type V6.

You can see the actual scores at www.ajac.ca, where you’ll find out that the new Corvette walloped the competitors in categories like throttle response, steering, handling, and brake feel, braking, and Subjective Value, as voted by the panel of voting journalists. The Stingray also tied for best in transmission and drivetrain refinement scores and had the quickest passing maneuver time, going from 80 to 120 km/h in only 3.2 seconds.

Points for performance figures like these are weighted for consumer importance in the category, and factored into the overall score.

The voters – who included dozens of Canada’s top road-test experts – drove all the cars on the same day, on the same public roads, and on a handling evaluation course.

“We thank AJAC for bestowing this prestigious award on the Corvette Stingray, demonstrating that Chevrolet can compete with the very best in the world on and off the track in technology, design and performance,” said Rob Assimakopoulos, general director of marketing and communications for Chevrolet in Canada.

Earlier this week, the 2014 Corvette Stingray earned North American Car of the Year honors as voted on by a group of automotive journalists who are mostly based in the United States.

Someone in Ontario Canada Stole this C5 Corvette Racer

Calling our friends in the Great White North to be on the lookout for this blue C5 Corvette Z06 racer that was stolen from the driveway of the owner’s parents house in Waterloo, Ontario. The Corvette was parked on a trailer and attached to a truck and the thieves took all three last Friday night/Saturday morning.

A plea from the owner Arun@DasilvaMotorsports was posted on the Corvette Forum:

Guys I need your help, on Nov 16 Friday eve or Sat morning somebody stole my C5, truck and trailer right out of my parents driveway. No amount of money can replace this car-I want it back-complete or piece by piece. If anyone has any information please call me at my shop at 519-747-9794 or text my cell at 519-502-0915.

The truck is a brown lifted 2007 F150 Crew Cab with Ontario plates: 115 1TX. The Corvette Z06 is pretty distinctive as well with its big rear racing slicks and a parachute.

2011 Corvette Grand Sport Stolen From Canadian GMC Dealership

For some, the lure of owning a Corvette is sometimes taken to extremes.

Take this 2011 Corvette Grand Sport for example.

The car must have made one heck of an impression on someone as it was stolen from a Canadian car dealer last week by being driven through a glass window.

Penticton’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force (RCMP) responded to a report of broken glass and a Corvette that sped away from Huber GMC in Penticton, British Columbia.

Police observed the Silver Corvette traveling at a high rate of speed and the car was clocked by radar doing 220 km/h (137 mph). Officers decided not to initiate pursuit and put out calls to the neighboring RCMP post in Summerland. Roadblocks were set up to capture the thief but he must have turned off the highway before reaching those checkpoints.

The Corvette is described as being a 2011 Special Heritage Edition Grand Sport Corvette which probably means the Corvette Coupe was outfitted with the GS Heritage Package.

If you have any details regarding the Corvette Grand Sport, call the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Corvettes are known for their power.

This black 1974 Corvette is known now for its ability to knock out the power to nearly 700 customers after it collided with a utility pole over the weekend.

The 40-year-old driver of the classic C3 faces a charge of careless driving, according to Hamilton Police Chief Carol Pacey, after he rammed his car into a hydro pole near Hunter Street in the Dundas community in Ontario, Canada at approximately 11:15 a.m. Sunday.

The crash chopped the pole in two, and emergency crews took an hour to extract the driver from the Corvette and take him to General Hospital. Fortunately, his injuries weren’t believed to be life threatening.

Meanwhile, crews from Horizon Utilities had power back on by 5:30 p.m. for all the affected customers in the area bounded by York Road, Olympic Drive, King Street East and York Road.

2014 Corvette Stingray Will Attend GM’s Powertrain Show at St.Catharines, Ontario

More than 500 cars, trucks, and bikes will be on display at the 15th annual General Motors St. Catharines plant car show in Ontario, Canada on Friday.

But you can bet the most popular vehicle will be the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray, with one of the seventh-generation cars slated to be on display at the show.

The public is being invited to get up close and personal with the car that is already drawing raves in the automobile industry, despite the fact that not one has been delivered to a paying customer yet.

“Don’t forget your cameras,” a spokesman for the show said.

Besides being able to see a Stingray up close, the show also offers another fun feature, a chance for owners to run their cars on the Chassis Dyno to get some figures on the output of their engines. “Back your machine onto the dyno and I’ll tell you exactly how many horses it’s pumping out,” says Mike, the dyno operator.

General Motors sponsors the all-GM-powered show on about 20 acres of field from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be making donations to three community charities – Habitat for Humanity, Autism Ontario, and Children’s Hospital.

The all-new “Back to the Future – Corvette Stingray” T-shirts will be on sale Friday.

“Join us for an action-packed day of horsepower madness,” said committee member Sue Stecyk.

Corvette Racing in Canada: Happy Hunting Grounds

Corvette Racing in Canada: Happy Hunting Grounds

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park has been good to Compuware Corvettes

BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO (July 16, 2013) – It’s time for Corvette Racing to head north of the border for its annual visit to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The American Le Mans Series’ lone Canadian event is the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix – a race Corvette Racing has won nine times since 2001.

The 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course is one of the fastest in the ALMS and a favorite of all four Corvette Racing drivers. The layout features a variety of high-speed corners and daunting elevation changes that audiences can see live on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 21. Qualifying for the GT class is set for 3:50 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 20 and will be available on ESPN3.

Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen – second in the GT drivers’ standings – drive the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R. Defending ALMS GT champions Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner pilot the No. 4 Corvette. They are fourth in the class championship.

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (known to long-time fans as Mosport) sees a number of new looks. The facility – co-owned by former Corvette Racing star Ron Fellows – saw improvements to the entryway, paddock and sightlines in 2012. In the last 12 months, the track underwent more dramatic renovations with the additions of a pitlane extension of 300 feet, a state-of-the-art event center, new asphalt at every corner and paved runoff areas at turns 1 and 2 to improve safety.

The character of the track hasn’t changed much since its first race in 1961. Through the years, CTMP has played host to Can-Am, Formula 5000, USAC stock cars, IndyCar, Trans-Am, Formula Atlantic, and of course the American Le Mans Series and IMSA. Most notably, the circuit was the site of the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix eight times between 1967-77.

“There are not many race venues in North America, or the world for that matter, with a history like the track once known as Mosport,” Corvette Racing Program Manager Doug Fehan said with a smile. “Historically, it has tested drivers and teams with a combination of challenging high-speed corners, extreme terrain change and insanely quick lap times. We have enjoyed some memorable successes here and the support from the great Canadian crowd has always been inspirational. I know all our guys are excited to see all the improvements that have been implemented at the facility, and I am confident our inaugural trip to the new-look Canadian Tire Motorsport Park will be a big step forward in our effort to repeat our 2012 championship.”

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“Even in a road car, it is difficult to understand how fast you go around the track. In my first practice there last year, it took me six or seven laps to not brake into Turn 1! In turns 2 and 3, you definitely need to pick your braking point and roll in. But for the first turn, it’s not how deep you brake but whether you need to lift to make it through in fifth or sixth gear. That was the corner that took me the most time to get right.”

JAN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 3 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“For sure Corvette Racing has had great success at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. We are looking to go and build on what we have done in the last two ALMS races – a win at Laguna and second-place at Lime Rock. If we can get a win at Mosport, it would really help our run for the GT championship. It’s a much more high-speed track than Lime Rock but it’s also a track where you can attack a lot. Lime Rock wasn’t one of those; you had to be more precise and smooth. But at Mosport you can go hard at it all the time. It’s one of my favorite tracks and we for sure are excited to go back there.”

OLIVER GAVIN, NO. 4 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“The track itself will be similar but the landmarks and cues you’d use to guide your way around the track – the stuff you pick up in your peripheral vision that all drivers learn – has changed because the runoff and places that were grass have gone to tarmac. There is a new pitlane with a different entry. All of that part of the track is different and will take a little bit of relearning. It will be challenging but interesting at the same time. I am looking forward to going there and seeing what’s been done. Ron is a big proponent of safety, and he’s worked at it very hard. You’re going at such a high speed and only have so much road to work with. Any slip up there can lead you into having a big moment. It will be once again a great place to go and I’m looking forward to going back there.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“It’s fantastic. It’s my favorite track we go to. It’s fun, fast, flowing and has a good rhythm to it. It’s really challenging in our GT car. I’ve had success there and been on the podium a number of times but a win has eluded me. Typically I don’t like tracks where I don’t do well, but this one I like no matter what. The new runoff areas won’t change how we drive the track at all. Certainly now you can be a little more ambitious going into turns 1 and 2 but that won’t make us any faster. In past years, we still pushed the limits and it wasn’t a place where we needed the extra runoff to go quicker. Lap times I don’t think will change very much but should help guys who get in a bad situation then you have some room to spare.”

Th green flag for The Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Mosport will drop on Sunday, July 21 at 12:00 pm. The race will be carried live at 1pm on ESPN2.

[PIC] Corvette Caught in Toronto’s Flash Flood

[PIC] Corvette Caught in Tornonto's Flash Flood

After a major thunderstorm swept through Toronto on Monday afternoon and dumped the equivalent of one month’s worth of rain in four hours, reports of flash floods starting pouring in. We caught a tweet from @meltait who is a/the multimedia editor/video producer for the Winnipeg Free Press. She shared a pic of this yellow Corvette submerged under an overpass.

Even sadder than the Corvette under water is wondering if the person standing to the left of the car is the owner. We can only wonder what it would be like to be staring at your pride and enjoy as it sits submerged in the rising flood waters.

Click here to view a larger picture of this Corvette.

Hopefully everything works out for all involved. And who knows, perhaps there is a new C7 in the owner’s future.
