[VIDEO] Motor Trend Tests the 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51

Yesterday we shared the instrumented testing data of the 2014 Corvette Stingray from Edmunds.com and now this morning we can also share Motor Trend’s test of the C7.

Motor Trend tested both a Z51 Stingray with a a 7-Speed manual at GM’s proving grounds, but they also had the opportunity to test a Z51 Stingray with an automatic transmission on public roads in Central California. So their review contains both performance estimates from their tests as well as the more subjective review from driving the Stingray on public streets.

Motor Trend has put out a 12 minuted video featuring their tests and road drives which we have embedded below. Here is their set-up for the test and then watch the video:

Finally! On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago gets behind the wheel of Chevrolet’s hotly anticipated 2014 Corvette Stingray 751, the most technologically advanced production Corvette ever made. First, Carlos heads to the test track to put the reborn 460hp V8-powered Stingray through the full barrage of Motor Trend’s instrumented tests: 0-60 mph acceleration, quarter mile, 60-0 mph braking, lateral acceleration, and figure-eight. The raw data backs up what Carlos can already feel from the driver’s seat – the 2014 Corvette goes fast, stops quick and handles corners with ease. Then, its off to the winding roads of Central California to see how the Vette’s continuously variable-locking differential, magnetic damping, rev matching and other high-tech features perform in the real world.

Here are the pertinent performance test statistics from Motor Trend:

  • 0-60: 3.9 seconds
  • Quarter Mile: 12.2 @ 117.3 mph
  • 60-0: 104 feet
  • MT Figure 8: 23.9 sec @ 0.82 g (avg)
  • Skid Pad: 1.11 g (average)

Here are the 2014 Corvette Stingray performance estimates released by Chevrolet back in June:

  • 0-60: 3.8 seconds
  • Quarter Mile: 12.0 @ 117.3 mph
  • 60-0: 107 feet
  • Skid Pad: 1.03 g

Motor Trend spends quite a bit of time talking about the new Corvette Stingray’s impressive array of technology. Check out this quote towards the end of the review:

Yes, the ability of StabiliTrak to twiddle electronic differential, magnetic damping, and myriad other settings while simultaneously modeling the tire temperatures and more seems almost wizard-like in the way it squeezes the utmost performance and handling out of the C7 Z51′s more rigid chassis and stickier Super Sport tires. The magical result is quite simply the easiest Corvette yet to thrash hard. And, yes, it does so without emasculating the car or making it feel anodyne, while preserving its essential Corvetteness. The view out over its impressively low, long hood is similar to that of every Corvette since the last Stingray. The burbling fourth-order engine and exhaust notes are every bit as intoxicating as the first Sting Rays’.

Steve Lane says he has never won anything in his life before, but all that changed on Sunday, July 14th when his name was drawn from 10,000 raffle tickets at the Saint Bernard Summer Social in Rockport, Indiana. His prize? A Horizon Blue 1960 Corvette Roadster valued at $70,000.

Steve made the eight hour drive from his home in Chasaning, Michigan last Friday to pick up the Corvette and trailer it back home.

“I still can’t believe I won this stunning car,” said Lane. “I only bought one raffle ticket!”

A stunning car indeed! The roadster is numbers matching and is powered by a dual-quad 283/270 hp V8 coupled to a 4-Speed manual transmission. The Corvette was purchased from ProTeam Corvette in Napolean, Ohio.

After a few photos and videos, Lane test drove his new Corvette on the streets surrounding the Catholic church in Rockport before loading it on the car hauler for the trip back to Michigan.

All 10,000 tickets were sold for this year’s raffle, with people as far way as Australia, Italy, Germany, New Zealand and Canada purchasing tickets for the fundraiser. The 25th annual Classic Corvette raffle helps to fund the church’s school and daycare programs in Rockport.

Tickets will go on sale for the 26th annual Corvette raffle in January, 2014.

[VIDEO] Listen to the Different Sounds from the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s Dual Mode Exhaust

video-listen-to-the-different-sounds-from-the-2014-corvette-stingrays-dual-mode-exhaust

We heard the exhaust in person on a pair of Corvette Stingrays that were the hit of the Bash at the National Corvette Museum back in April and loved the beautiful – and very different – sounds emanating from both cars as they were driven out of the museum.

Now Autoblog.com has posted a video that shows three different sounds coming from the same Stingray, courtesy of the optional dual mode performance exhaust, available at a cost of $1,195.

It’s amazing how the settings can make such a difference in the exhaust sound, though in this video, the car is just idling. It would be nice to hear how the car sounds in each mode under full throttle going down the road.

By the way, the Corvette’s standard exhaust system will mark the first usage of Tenneco’s electrical valve technology for sound tuning to provide a unique signature sound when you drive this exciting beast. The electric valves will be working together with the vehicle’s new Active Fuel Management system, which saves gas by switching between four-cylinder and eight-cylinder mode. As the Corvette switches between the two engine modes, the valves will open and close to control the sound of the exhaust.

In addition to those valves, the dual-mode exhaust system will also include the option of two more electrical valves in the tailpipes, tuned specifically for enhanced sound quality. During normal driving conditions, these extra valves will be closed, but they’ll open during harder acceleration, creating lower backpressure, more engine power, and that beautiful Corvette signature sound.

On both exhaust systems, the four exhaust ports feature larger 2.75 inch diameter openings than the 2.5 inch openings on the C6. Both have butterfly valves that open for enhanced performance and sound. The standard system has a 13% improvement in airflow while the optional dual-mode system offers a 27% improvement in airflow.

No matter how the exhaust sounds on the Stingray of your dreams, it’s no doubt going to be a sound that a lot of competitors will be hearing a lot of, as they stay far behind the powerful seventh-generation Corvette.

[ACCIDENT] Drunk Driver Takes Out a Parked Corvette and Motorcycle in Idaho

[ACCIDENT] Drunk Driver Takes Out a Parked Corvette and Motorcycle in Idaho

You’d like to think that your Corvette and motorcycle are safe when they’re parked in your own driveway and garage, wouldn’t you?

But not always.

A black on black C4 convertible and a motorcycle unwittingly became the victims of a four-vehicle pileup in Moscow, Idaho last week.

Police believe a 24-year-old driving drunk instigated the chain-reaction crash that caused an estimated $25,000 in damage at 3 a.m. Thursday, July 18.

The chain of events began on Quail Run Drive when the man crashed his SUV into a pickup truck, causing it to strike the Corvette parked in a driveway across the street. The Corvette then rolled into the garage and damaged a motorcycle parked inside.

Neighbor Lianne Wappett told KLEW-TV that it was “just an unbelievable night.”

“We actually had the whole block was out here watching, and just couldn’t believe how much damage one person could cause,” Wappett said.

The driver walked away from the crash, but he was taken to Gritman Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. No word on any charges he’s facing, but police are waiting on the results of a blood test to decide if he was drunk.

[VIDEO] C6 Corvette Caught in Arizona's Flash Flood on Sunday

A thunderstorm hit the Phoenix, AZ area Sunday morning and dropped up to two inches of rain, causing the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood alert. Unfortunately, that warning came too late for one driver who became a hapless passenger after his silver C6 Corvette was swept off the road and down a wash for more than 100 yards by raging flood waters.

ABC15.com reports the seventy year old owner was spotted near his vehicle after it was washed off the road. The man was rescued by the Phoenix Fire Department and no injuries were reported.

In this video from ABC15.com, you can see just how far the Corvette traveled before it came to rest against the side of a tree in the wash.

Damage to the Corvette appears to be extensive as the rear bumper cover is missing and the Corvette is resting in water that is higher than the wheels wells on the passenger side.

Corvette Racing in Canada: Second, Sixth in ALMS GT Qualifying

Corvette Racing in Canada: Second, Sixth in ALMS GT Qualifying

Hard crash for Magnussen but No. 3 Compuware Corvette will be ready to race

BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO (July 20, 2013) – Corvette Racing is a nine-time winner at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in American Le Mans Series competition. But the track formerly known as Mosport proved Saturday it can be unforgiving to even the best in racing.

Jan Magnussen set the second-fastest lap in GT qualifying for the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R before a significant crash with less than five minutes left in the session. Upon its return to the team’s paddock, the Corvette crew went straight to work to dismantle and repair the No. 3 entry, which has Magnussen and Antonio Garcia second in the ALMS GT championship. Sunday’s race airs live on ESPN2 starting at 1 p.m. ET.

The Dane’s best time was a 1:15.601 (117.094 mph) that he set on his fifth lap. With pole position in his sights, Magnussen was on a flyer before a small bump in the middle of the third corner caused the Corvette to unsettle and veer slightly wide at the exit. The left-rear tire went off the surface just enough to send Magnussen into a spin and hard into the outside tire barrier.

The car will start Sunday’s race from the rear of the grid and is expected to make the morning warmup at 9:10 a.m.

Tommy Milner qualified the No. 4 Compuware Corvette sixth in class at 1:16.083 (116.352 mph). Despite the position, Milner was only 0.621 seconds off pole position. The car struggled to find balance in the second practice session and qualifying but Milner believed the fix would be an easy adjustment for Sunday’s race. He and teammate Oliver Gavin – defending ALMS GT champions – will go for their second ALMS victory of the season.

“Tommy and Jan both had solid qualifying efforts,” said Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing Program Manager. “Jan’s crash was unfortunate. He was on a good lap, but we were reminded how quickly this track can come up and bite anyone. The entire Corvette Racing team is an experienced and resilient group and will work as long as it takes to get the car repaired and ready for Sunday. It’s that ‘never give up’ spirit that we all exude.”

JAN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 3 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“One of the things I love about this place is that there is a real consequence to making mistakes or pushing too hard. We were just a tenth back from pole and this was an attempt to get it. I still think (the pole time) was in the car but I just bounced in the middle of Turn 3 over a small bump and that put me a little bit off line at the exit. A wheel off into the grass and that was it. I was off into the tire wall. I feel sorry for the team. For sure you try to avoid these things but sometimes they happen. When you hit the tire wall at an angle, it tends to rip things off the car. It will be a bit of work for the guys but the car was awesome in qualifying and I believe the pole time was in it. That’s why I went for it. The car will be perfect for the race.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 COMPUWARE CORVETTE C6.R

“In the previous practice we struggled with the balance of the car and that carried over into qualifying. We’re not way off by any means. The GT field is so close that you have to have a great car, and we have that. It’s a bummer. This was my first qualifying run in awhile and had the issue with balance. We had a bit too much understeer and need to dial some of that out of the car. But we have a direction to go and we’re not lost by any means. We will make some small changes here and there and be ready for tomorrow. We should be in good shape for the race.”

The green flag for the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Mosport will drop on Sunday, July 21 at 12:00 pm ET. The race will be carried live at 1pm on ESPN2 or streamed live on ESPN3 at 11:45 am ET.

[VIDEO] GM’s Consumer Affairs Chief James Bell Discusses the 2014 Corvette Stingray

[VIDEO] GM's Consumer Affairs Chief James Bell Discusses the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Look out, competition, the Corvette Stingray is nearly here.

That’s the word from James Bell, Chevrolet’s head of consumer affairs, during a recent chat with Digital Trends.

Bell says he expects to see the Corvette diehards come out and buy the 2014 model, then adds that he expects a lot from younger buyers, too.

“Maybe somebody coming out of a 911 is looking for something unique and different,” Bell suggests. “I think the Corvette is going to do a great job at capturing that buyer.”
And no wonder, the car is a seamless package.

“It’s a vehicle you could theoretically drive every day, but yet has supercar performance,” Bell says. “When you compare the numbers of this car to a Porsche or a lower entry-level Ferrari, you’re right there for a portion of the price. But the fact that it’s a Chevrolet, means that if something happens to the car, there’s probably a couple of Chevy stores in your neighborhood that you can take it into. What’s exciting about this 2014 verion is that it pulls together all the things you look for in a sports car and then moves the needle forward.”

While we’ve all heard about the massive 455 horsepower in the base Corvette, fortunately for Chevy customers, that engine technology will be spread around the company’s whole lineup. “The bones of this motor are going to be in the new Silverado pick-up truck, the new Tahoe and the Escalade,” Bell says. “You’ll probably see it in future sedans. This motor has been in the pipeline for many years.”

Icing on the cake in this day of expensive gasoline prices is the best-in-class fuel economy of the new Stingray, which will deliver 29 mpg on the highway. Not bad for a car that can also go from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds.

“You just look at where this market is,” Bell says. “If a car of this nature is going to compete against the Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 and Audi R8, then it’s got to do 0 – 60 in, well, less than four seconds. It’s got to have a top speed of up near 200 mph. We just happen to up the game by having great fuel efficiency as well.”

Bell believes that the gas mileage could be a big factor in luring younger customers to the fold.

“The younger buyers that we are seeing in survey after survey after survey are looking for better fuel efficiency so they don’t have to look at a car like this and then somehow have to excuse themselves for not being smart to the environment,” he says. “This car takes care of them there.”

Also helping lure new customers will be the increased technology on the Stingray.

“It’s going to be right up there for what people expect from any new modern car,” he said. “Obviously, you got the ability to integrate your phone using Chevrolet MyLink and Bluetooth, Pandora and satellite navigation. It really is right up there with the standard that you find in any car today. I think that’s a really big step up when you think about the older Corvette, the C6 generation compared to this one. It was a bit archaic on the inside – not only from a design and material standpoint, but also from a connectivity perspective. This is one of the reasons this car is going to be so appealing to a younger buyer because they are looking for that in their next car. It’s not just a novelty to be able to connect their phone and stream to their favorite Pandora channels. It’s a requirement.”

[VIDEO] Faces of GM: The 2014 Corvette Stingray Lands in Europe

[VIDEO] Faces of GM: The 2014 Corvette Stingray Lands in Europe

Last week we told you that two C7 Corvette Stingrays were headed to Europe for testing in Germany, Switzerland, France and Holland as part of GM’s standard quality control. Chevrolet Europe’s technical manager Patrick Herrmann has been tasked to lead the tests and as a special bonus, he will be sharing his experiences on social media.

Herrmann was recently interviewed for a video to be posted on Faces of GM and as you’ll see, he is pretty excited about his latest project.

Patrick describes himself as a “race head” and at the age of 15 was already working with some local rally race teams as part of the service crew. His own racing career started at 18 and it took off very quickly with driving in European races and rallys.

Now working with General Motors in Europe, he points to the C7 Corvette on the lift behind him and says that this is his favorite part of the job because “that is really pure emotions.”

Patrick says that during the test sessions, they will be looking at the system integrations like navigation, steering and the suspension set-ups on European roads.

“The new Corvette C7,” says Herrmann, “I can actually talk for hours about that because so many ideas and improvements that we had in our heads in the last test and development in the C6 we are making right into that car. And everybody loves the car and there is a good reason because it’s so cool. ”

Corvette fans will be able to follow the adventures of Patrick Herrmann and the first Corvette Stingrays in Europe on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Instagram using the hashtag #C7Experience.

And just to remind you of Patrick’s previous exploits with a Corvette on European roads, here he is back in 2008 driving the 1st European Corvette ZR1 to 192 mph on the German Autobahn.

[VIDEO] 1978 Corvette Pace Car with 4.4 miles to be auctioned in September

Just when you might be thinking that all the old “barn finds” have surely been discovered by now, you hear about someone like the Lambrechts.

Ray and Mildred Lambrecht have been running Lambrecht Chevrolet in Pierce, Nebraska for the past 50 years – with just one other employee – but since they’re getting on up in years now, they’ve made the tough decision to shut the business down.

Half a century is a long time, though, and it’s no surprise that the Lambrechts have managed to amass quite a collection of classic vehicles. In fact, later this year, they will be auctioning off approximately 500 vehicles they kept over the years, including a 1978 Corvette Pace Car that’s a little dusty but still has the plastic wrap on the seats and shows just 4.4 miles on the odometer!

[VIDEO] 1978 Corvette Pace Car with 4.4 miles to be auctioned in September

Amazingly, it’s one of about 50 vehicles they have driven less than 10 miles.

For example, they’ve got a 1956 Chevrolet Cameo pickup with just over a mile showing, not to mention a 1965 Impala that’s virtually “worn out” compared to that truck. The Impala has six miles – the original window sticker and plastic sheeting over the seats, still in place.

The VanDerBrink Auction company will be in charge of the sale in Pierce on Sept. 28-29, and they’re still documenting all of the vehicles. Yahoo reports today that the list will include Bel Airs, Corvairs, a couple of Vegas, dozens of pieces of memorabilia, hubcaps, and a Corvette pedal car. We’ll try to keep you posted as more details emerge. This sounds like it could be a great sale.

Naturally, the auction will be a bittersweet time for the Lambrechts. Their daughter, Jeannie Lambrecht Stillwell, says the vehicles “comprise a lifetime of hard work, tears, and joy.”

Visit The VanDerBrink Auction company for more information on the auction as well as a list of cars and parts to be auctioned September 28th-29th, 2013.
