The 2014 Corvette Stingray Will Start at $51,995

Since the new Corvette Stingray was revealed on 1.13.13, one major question waiting to be answered was how much will the new C7 cost. Today, we are very happy to reveal that the 2014 Corvette Stingray Coupe will have a suggested retail starting price of $51,995 and the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible will start at $56,995. Both prices include a $995 destination fee.

For all the refinements and innovations in the next generation Corvette, the fact that you can get into one for $51,995 is a watershed moment for Chevrolet. The new Stingray will sell for only $1,400 more than the current base C6 Coupe while the base convertible’s price increases just $1,240. That makes good on Chevrolet’s promise that if you can afford a C6 Corvette, then you can afford a C7.

“The 2014 Corvette Stingray perfectly embodies Chevrolet’s mission to deliver more than expected for our customers,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “The Corvette Stingray delivers a combination of performance, design and technology that very few manufacturers can match, and none can even come close for $52,000.”

Let’s take a look a quick look at the standard features available on the new Corvette:

  • 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine with direct injection, Active Fuel Management, variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system
  • New seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Matching
  • Aluminum frame that is 99 pounds lighter (40 kg) and 57 percent stiffer than previous model’s structure
  • Carbon fiber hood on all models, and a carbon fiber removable roof panel on coupes
  • Five-position Drive Mode Selector that tailors up to 12 vehicle attributes
  • Dual, eight-inch configurable driver/infotainment screens, with next-generation Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system and rear vision camera
  • Bose 9-speaker audio system with SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB
  • An all-new, fully electronic top on the convertibles, that can be lowered remotely using the key fob

As for pricing on the optional features and content packages, Chevy tells us the Torch Red 2014 Corvette Stingray Coupe with the Z51 package as it was displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit would be priced at $73,360:

  • 3LT interior package, with leather-wrapped interior ($8,005)
  • Z51 Performance Package ($2,800)
  • Competition sports seats ($2,495)
  • Exposed-carbon-fiber roof panel ($1,995)
  • Magnetic Ride Control with Performance Traction Management ($1,795)
  • Dual-mode exhaust system ($1,195)
  • Carbon fiber interior trim ($995)
  • Sueded, microfiber wrapped upper interior trim ($995)
  • Red-painted calipers ($595)
  • Black-painted wheels ($495)

Chevy defines the 3LT and Z51 packages as:

The 3LT interior package includes the Bose, 10-speaker surround-sound audio system; SiriusXM radio with one-year subscription and HD radio receiver; color head-up display; memory package; navigation system; heated and ventilated seats with power lumbar and bolster adjustment; premium Napa leather seating surfaces; and leather-wrapped dash and instrument panel, console and door panels.

The Z51 Performance Package includes the high-performance gear ratios; transmission-cooling system; larger 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels and tires; larger, slotted rotors and brake-cooling ducts; Performance Traction Management; electronic limited-slip differential and differential cooling system; unique chassis tuning; and available Magnetic Ride Control active-handling system with Performance Traction management. Equipped with the Z51 package, the Corvette Stingray is capable of accelerating from 0 – 60 mph in under four seconds, and more than 1 g in cornering.

Check out the Latest Callaway C16

Last week Chris from Callaway Cars tipped us off to a thread he started on the Corvette Forum where he shows off the most recent Callaway C16 to roll out of their shop. He says the Night Race Blue machine is all finished and ready to be shipped to its owner. We wish it was coming to our garage instead.

Every Callaway C16 comes equipped with all the options available on a Callaway Corvette. Meaning that all of the upgrades available on the other Callaway offerings such as the wheel and tire group, upgraded suspension and brakes as well as the Deutschleder Interior are all standard on this top dog C16.

As mentioned above, the exterior wears the factory Night Race Blue Metallic paint while the interior features Night Race Blue stitching on the dove gray leather and alcantara areas. You’ll also notice that the carbon fiber interior package was included as well. In the Corvette Forum thread Chris states that the customer elected the factory seats over sport models and that the customer “…could own any car in the World (and does own several other very significant vehicles) however, they appreciated the Callaway brand of performance…”

According to the Callaway website the C16 has 650hp and 600lb-ft of torque on tap. The 0-60mph sprint takes 3.3sec and the 1/4 mile flashes by in 11 seconds at 128mph. Keep the throttle mashed and you’ll top out at 207mph. All that performance will set you back about $225,000.

The Story Behind Rick Hendrick’s 1967 Corvette Convertible

The Story Behind Rick Hendrick's 1967 Corvette Convertible

When Bob Martin got the news he had prostate cancer in 2000, he decided it was time to fulfill a lifelong dream and finally buy a Corvette.

And boy, what a Corvette he found!

Thanks to the kind folks at ProTeamCorvette.com and owner Terry Michaelis, Bob soon became the owner of a 1967 big block roadster once owned by music legend Roy Orbison.

Terry had bought the car from Barbara Orbison a few years after her husband’s death and says it is one of just two known black and red 1967 roadsters with the 427/435 motor. “But, this one in particular is the only known with its original motor,” Terry said.

That’s when Bob and his wife, Carol, came into the picture, traveling 14 hours from Great Bend, Kansas to ProTeam Corvette’s facility in Ohio and then driving their new car over to Niagara Falls for a memorable three-day vacation.

“It was one of the most wonderful times of our lives,” Bob told TheBlock.com, “getting to enjoy Niagara Falls and buying this car together.”

Unfortunately, two years later, the car was stolen briefly from the Martin garage. “They drove it 10 miles north on a dirt road and ran it off into a muddy wheat field,” Bob recalled. “When we found it, there was mud all the way up the sides of the doors; it was a complete mess. The car ended up having about $14,000 worth of damage to it, but we sent it back to Terry Michaelis to work on.”

The Corvette proved to be popular with all of the family.

“Bob just really loved that Corvette,” Carol said. “He’d drive down Main Street and be so proud of it. Bob scared me with the car though; he liked to drive it more like it was an airplane than a car! Once in a while he’d pass some cops and they would just shake their finger and grin. And all our grandkids used to love to be able to tell their friends that their granddad had a Corvette.”

When it was time to sell the car, the Martins called Terry Michaelis, and he soon found another owner who would love the car just as much as Bob and Carol: Rick Hendrick!

“Really just knowing that Rick had such an interest in Corvettes and that he would take care of it like he did was what eased us,” said Bob, who still admitted to shedding a few tears as the car left his home. “It’s a phenomenal piece of machinery, and we just needed somebody to take care of it.”

That was the beginning of a strong bond between Rick Hendrick and the Martins.

“He’s a wonderful man,” Bob said. “…I haven’t regretted selling the car as I know it went to a wonderful owner. When I was in the hospital a few months ago, my wife e-mailed Rick. I was having some issues, lost the use of my legs and couldn’t walk. Once Rick found out about that, he sent a care basket. It must’ve weighed 50 pounds!”

Unfortunately, here’s where the story turns sad. Bob finally lost his battle with cancer on April 9, but not before he had had a chance to add his own chapter to this Corvette’s life story. Bob Martin may not have been a celebrity like Roy Orbison or Rick Hendrick, but his love for this special Corvette was just as powerful.

[VIDEO] Mazda Crashes Into the Back of a Corvette at Thunderhill Raceway

[VIDEO] Mazda Crashes Into Back of a Corvette at Thunderhill Raceway

The crew from Corvetteonline found this video showing a wild bump on camera between a Mazda MX-5 and a Corvette C5 racer at Thunderhill Raceway Park in northern California.

In the video, the C5 pours on the juice on a long straightaway and zips past the Mazda before a left turn, but then suddenly slows down drastically on the next left turn because, he said later, he eyeballed a yellow flag “displayed by a corner worker for an off-track car ahead.”

Unfortunately, the MX5 driver was right behind the Corvette and couldn’t apply his brakes quickly enough, nipping the C5’s right bumper in the process. The contact sent the Mazda soaring into the air, balancing momentarily on its right two wheels and then falling back down on all fours before coming to a stop off the track.

Bill Brinkop the driver of the Corvette in the video, posted this update on the Corvette Forum explaining the racing incident:

Hi guys, I just had a new wrap done on my ST2 car so it was bound to have some contact this weekend.

There was a waving yellow flag in T11 that you can’t see in the video. I was trying not to pass the legends car under yellow. In the split second that I decided to not pass that slow legends car I didn’t realize he must have also been disabled and going so slowly. The yellow was for a GT40 that had spun on the exit of the turn.

Sucks for both me and the miata guy. Luckily I only broke a rear spindle and nothing else except for body damage. What sucks is I just got the car wrapped. Both the other driver (who is my friend) and I are fine. Let’s not turn this into a big forum “you should have done this or that” session please. After 5 years of racing and dozens of close calls these things will happen sooner or later. Thanks!

Bill.

BTW, this weekend was going quite well up until that point. I qualified pole in the SU class and was winning a close race holding off some fast cars. One split second of a bad decision made the day not so good. Oh well, live and learn.

[ACCIDENT] New Hampshire Man Faces DUI Charges in C6 Corvette Crash

[ACCIDENT] New Hampshire Man Faces DUI Charges in C6 Corvette Crash

A New Hampshire man faces multiple charges after wrecking his C6 Corvette on Saturday night, then leaving the scene of the accident.

Bedford police say William Morel, 47, allegedly lost control of his yellow 2006 Corvette on Campbell Road near Wellesley Road around 9 p.m. and slid off the pavement, striking a tree stump.

Morel apparently took off on foot and left behind an injured passenger. Police found Morel more than an hour later walking along King Road about 2½ miles from the accident scene.

They’ve charged him with driving while intoxicated, conduct after an accident, reckless conduct, and operating after suspension, “among other charges.”

Fortunately, the passenger, who was carried to a Manchester hospital, suffered injuries that did not appear life threatening.

The same can’t be said for the Corvette, which was badly damaged especially on the passenger side. One of its rear wheels also came off and was found in the road.

Morel was released on personal recognizance bail and will appear in Merrimack district court on May 2.
