The Corvette Hobby Comes Together for the 7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

Article contributed by Lance Miller / Corvettes at Carlisle / Chip Miller Charitable Foundation

The Corvette hobby lost an amazing person in 2004. My father, Chip Miller passed away from a rare disease called amyloidosis. Shortly after his passing, my family and I decided to start the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation (CMCF) in his honor and to raise awareness of this terrible disease.

The Corvette hobby was and continues to be the driving force behind the efforts and mission of the CMCF. My father was not only a wonderful person; he was also a best friend and mentor to me and many of my friends. His loss affected me in many ways, but most importantly to follow his mantra of “Life is good!” He was an incredibly positive, caring and generous person and his passing made me realize just how precious every minute really is and to enjoy the time we have on this earth.

In 2005 during Corvettes at Carlisle I wanted to do something different for Chip’s Choice that would honor not only my father but the parent and child relationship. That year we featured Parent / Child relationships through Corvette ownership. Many of the stories were extremely emotional and brought tears to my eyes; some were fun and entertaining and would make you smile from ear to ear. One submission included Andy Rumford and his son, both who came to Corvettes at Carlisle that year. Andy mentioned that he would like to start an event in honor of my father and to help raise money and awareness for amyloidosis. Immediately the CMCF board provided the green light and Andy along with Michael Crank jumped into creating the annual event dubbed Corvettes for Chip. Obviously it takes more than a couple people to facilitate and run a Corvette fundraising event, so Andy and Michael quickly secured various local Corvette club members to help with the effort. After seven years, the event continues to thrive and brings in many smiles along with some incredible Corvettes which of course helps to generate much needed donations for the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation.

7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

The event was held for the first time at Thomas Chevrolet in Media, PA. Beautiful weather, an outstanding location and a vast array of incredible Corvettes helped to make this year’s Corvettes for Chip an exceptional event. The Best of Show went to Pat Lamerton and his beautiful ’64 Corvette! Each year the committee asks me to pick my favorite Corvette on the field. This year I chose a ’69 Corvette owned by Frank Andalora with Delaware Valley NCRS. Frank knew my father and they would travel to various Corvette events and challenge one another on the show circuit with their ’69 Corvettes. One weekend my father’s ’69 would win, the next weekend Frank’s would win. Frank and my father quickly realized it wasn’t the competition that kept them coming back, it was the friendship. Frank spoke about the many lasting friendships he created through his ‘69 Corvette. When all is said and done, that’s what our hobby is all about… the people and friendships that are formed.

I must also mention the many tasty baked goods at the event for sale as well. In fact, I scored some of the tastiest brownies I’ve had in a long time (sorry Michele). The majority of the baked goods came from the Williams family whose father/husband has amyloidosis and has been supporting Corvettes for Chip for the past several years. There were also some amazing auction items and a 50/50 raffle.

7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

After the awards presentation, I introduced Michelle Major, who shared her heartfelt story about her late husband’s battle with amyloidosis. Her husband was misdiagnosed for over a year, and of course, like my father, when they finally diagnosed him with amyloidosis, the disease was too far gone for effective treatment. Her courage and determination throughout their ordeal helped remind me just how important it is to continue our fight against this deadly disease.

Wrapping up the days’ festivities included a drawing for a freshly delivered 2014 Stingray Corvette. I had the honor to pull the winning ticket from the County Corvette Associations sold out and extremely successful raffle. Rocky Crisconi, a member of Corvette Club of Northern Delaware, ran up to the car and got on his knees and kissed the front of his new 2014 Corvette when his name was called over the microphone. What a wonderful way to end a great day!

If you weren’t able to make the event and would like to contribute towards the CMCF, please feel free visiting: http://chipmiller.org. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

7th Annual Corvettes for Chip

From the bottom of my heart I’d like to thank all of the sponsors, participants, attendees and especially each of the volunteers that make this event what it has become! It means the world to my family and the CMCF board members knowing my father is still making a positive impact even ten years after his passing.

As my best friend would always say… LIFE IS GOOD!

On a side note, Andy Rumford (co-founder of Corvettes for Chip) never met my father and simply wanted to do something nice to help a son that was grieving because his father passed away way too early. He wanted to help us spread the word about this terrible disease. Losing a father or mother is incredibly difficult, however, losing a son or daughter is more difficult. In fact, it’s something I can’t even fathom and something I hope never happens. This past year Andy and his wife lost their daughter Kacie who passed away from a heroin overdose. Promptly following her passing the Rumford family started Kacie’s Cause (more information can be found by visiting http://www.kaciescause.com/). Please visit the website and take some time to learn about this terrible problem that’s occurring more and more frequently. Andy and his family would like to help other families recognize the tragic consequences of heroin and the addictions it may cause.

[VIDEO] Driver Flees After Crashing a C5 Corvette into an Apartment Building

[VIDEO] Driver Flees After Crashing Corvette into an Apartment Building

Last week was definitely a bad time to be a building in Buffalo, N.Y.

A customized silver C5 Corvette became the third vehicle in less than a week to crash into a structure in that city.

Hamburg Police say the Corvette driver rammed into the apartment building on Lake Avenue, leaving chunks of concrete and other debris in its wake, about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Witnesses told Buffalo’s WGRZ Channel 2 that they saw the car leave Kaz’s Bar on Lake Avenue just before the accident, then saw the driver quickly get out and take off running.

The Corvette crash came just a day after a station wagon went sailing into the front window of a home in Buffalo when the driver lost control. No one was seriously hurt.

On Tuesday last week, in south Buffalo, an SUV ended up wedged at a 45-degree angle against the eave of a house after the driver suffered a medical emergency.

[ACCIDENT] Arizona County Official’s Red C5 Corvette Damaged in Crash

[ACCIDENT] Arizona County Official's Red C5 Corvette Damaged in Crash

An accident involving a county government leader made some news earlier this month in Arizona.

Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox’s red C5 Corvette convertible (with light oak top) is smiling a little sideways these days – with the front bumper knocked loose and hanging on by only one side and the passenger’s side of the hood pointing toward the sky now.

Phoenix New Times blog is reporting that a local activist named Lydia Guzman posted the photos of Wilcox’s accident on Facebook. Guzman blamed the wreck on another motorist running a red light but said that Wilcox was not injured in the wreck.

It’s not the first time and probably won’t be the last time Wilcox is in the news. The New Times reports that in 2012 she received a $975,000 settlement after being determined to be a victim of the discredited criminal investigations by Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Some accused her of “doing so well financially courtesy of us taxpayers she recently bought a SECOND late model Corvette.”

These allegations obviously come from someone who doesn’t know the value of a C5 Corvette, which is actually cheaper these days than a lot of ordinary new “economy” cars. We don’t know what kind of second Corvette she has, but unless it’s a real late model, she didn’t necessarily spend big bucks for her toys.

Wilcox also came under attack another time after Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sean Pearce, son of now-ousted Senate President Russell Pearce, told his superior that he witnessed Wilcox asking a county mechanic to check the air in one of her Corvette’s tires. That became a “review” of an “incident” involving an “alleged improper use of public resources.” She was cleared of the charges, and we wonder just how much taxpayer money was wasted investigating this alleged “crime.”

And people wonder why good folks are reluctant to run for political office!

If owning two Corvettes is a reason to be criticized by voters, then there are a lot of people out there who might not want to toss their hats in the ring next election season.

By the way, if you think Sheriff Arpaio sounds familiar, no wonder. He’s the sheriff who has been featured in the media thousands of times in regard to his treatment of prisoners, including the institution of a Tent City next to the jail to house some inmates, who have complained about the extremely high temperatures inside. “It’s 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents, have to wear full body armor, and they didn’t commit any crimes, so shut your mouths,” Arpaio told them.

[PICS] Vettes and Jets on the Lex 2013

One of the coolest recurring Corvette shows that happens once every couple of years is Vettes and Jets on the Lex. Over 300 Corvettes are loaded onto the flight deck of the retired aircraft carrier USS Lexington for a two day Corvette show. The Corvettes are parked next to many of the retired jets from our Armed Forces and proceeds of the event goes to support The Wounded Warrior Project.

One of the attendees was Tim LeGros who goes by the call sign of “SoSlow1″ on the Corvette Forum. On Sunday morning as the sun was rising, Tim hit the flight deck of “The Blue Ghost” as the Lex was called and took these great photos showing the Corvettes intermingled with the Jets on the flight deck.

The event is really a three day affair as the Corvettes converged Friday evening in Corpus Christi, TX. Loading of the cars onto the flight deck is an event unto itself as the Corvettes begin loading on the Lex at 5am Saturday morning.

Check out these photos and videos from the 2013 Vettes and Jets on the Lex:

The Corvette Vanity Plates of Corvettes at Carlisle 2013

The Corvette Vanity Plates of Corvettes at Carlisle 2013

One of the topics I love covering at the big Corvette shows are the vanity plates that owners put on their Corvettes. Corvettes at Carlisle is no exception as the thousands of Corvettes parked in the fun field and surrounding lots make for a target rich environment when it comes to seeing the fun and witty comments that owners put on their cars.

As we’ve mentioned before about vanity plates, there appears to be two camps when it comes to putting the perfect 7-character (or less) saying on the license plate. You will have owners describe their Corvette (Stevz C6, 1 QYK Z, MY HOTC6) or they tend to describe their state of minds (KIDZRGON, JUS CHLN, CRAZY4U).

Most of the plates we saw hailed from around Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia and Ohio. We did see a couple from farther destinations including Maine, Florida and of course Michigan.

From walking the rows of cars at Corvettes at Carlisle we could have had three times the amount of photos, but these were some of our favorites. If you see your Corvette’s vanity plate, let us know!

[VIDEO] C5 Corvette Pulled From a New Orleans Bayou

Down in the Bayou definitely takes on a new meaning for this Corvette.

New Orleans Police pulled the black C5 hardtop (possibly a 1999 or 2000 model) out of Bayou St. John early Wednesday morning.

WVUE Channel 8 in New Orleans showed live video of the Corvette – minus at least its left front fender and rear bumper, with the left rear tire dangling – being pulled out of the water about 7:45 a.m. today.

Police found no one in the car, but in a noon statement said they have made contact with the driver, though they did not release his name. They did say he was alone in the Corvette.

Witnesses reported seeing a man climb out of the water shortly after the accident, which happened around 4 a.m. Recovery efforts began at 5:30 a.m., and the northbound lanes of Wisner Boulevard between Esplanade and Desaix were closed until 8:55 a.m.

NOPD is continuing its investigation and won’t say how or why the car made its way into the water.

[VIDEO] 2013 Corvettes at Carlisle - Downtown Parade

One of the highlights of Corvettes at Carlisle is the Saturday evening parade where hundreds of Corvettes make their way from the fairgrounds to downtown Carlisle. Leading the parade was Bill Miller in a classic C1 Convertible while Lance Miller was driving his 2012 Carlisle Blue Corvette ZR1.

Behind them was the GM / Corvette Team reps all driving the new 2014 Corvette Stingrays.

When the Corvettes get to downtown, they are parked in the middle of the street and the crowds come off the sidewalks to check out all the cool cars.

The Checkered Flag Falls on the Corvette Reunion & Back to the Bricks Show

The Checkered Flag Falls on the Corvette Reunion & Back to the Bricks Show

While the largest one day automotive event in the country was taking place on Woodward Avenue in the suburbs of Detroit, an equally impressive event was taking place sixty miles to the north in Flint, Michigan, a city rich in automotive history.

The spectacular Back to the Bricks car show and the Corvette Reunion welcomed a huge throng of automobile enthusiasts, including Mark Reuss, President of General Motors of North America. Reuss was one of the featured speakers at the unveiling of a bronze statue honoring William “Billy” Durant, founder of General Motors. Durant’s statue will join David Buick and Louis Chevrolet on the brick plaza of downtown Flint. Most of downtown Flint was closed to accommodate the thousands of cars and crowd of spectators, estimated at over a half million, along the streets of the historic city.

Cars of every type began lining the downtown streets at 6 AM, Saturday morning, August 17th to be a part of the 9th Annual Back to the Bricks car show and the 4th Annual Corvette Reunion. There were several thousand cars and trucks being shown, including classic, muscle, restomod, sports and race cars and if you are an automobile enthusiast there was plenty to keep you occupied. Even the world famous drag racing team “The Ramchargers” were there with some of their vintage drag mopars. The show has become so large that it is difficult to see all the cars in a full day.

The Checkered Flag Falls on the Corvette Reunion & Back to the Bricks ShowOne of the outstanding features of the Back to the Bricks show is the thousands of dollars it raises to fund statues of automotive pioneers to help revitalize the downtown of Flint. The Bricks is a non-profit organization that over its nine years has raised money to fund four bronze statues. The kick off of this year’s event was to unveil the statue of William Durant, the latest addition to Flint’s plaza. The opening ceremonies got underway with a “fly over” by vintage “Hellcat” planes which were powered by Buick engines made in Flint. Following the flag raising and national anthem several speakers gave brief presentations about the Bricks event and how important it has been to the rebirth of the downtown. Mark Reuss, GM president and an acclaimed “car guy”, was one of the speakers at the unveiling and pledged GM’s continued support for the historic city and birthplace of the corporation. Just a few weeks before General Motors acquired the historic building which housed the Dort-Durant Carriage Company on Water Street, a building which has become known as “Factory 1″. Reuss, acknowledged by many to be instrumental in getting the business back into the hands of car enthusiasts, said the final plans for the historic building were still being developed but implied one of the options was to house several of GM’s historic Buick and GMC vehicles which they currently do not have room to display on a continuous basis.

One of the favorite parts of the Bricks event is the Corvette Reunion which drew in excess of 600 Corvettes from all parts of the US and Canada. Appropriately, the Corvette Reunion takes place in the birthplace of the Corvette; Flint is where the first Corvettes were produced. Corvettes of every generation were represented from outstanding restorations to wild customs and restomods. The chairman of the event since its inception four years ago is Gary Drago, well-known, life-long Corvette enthusiast. With the help of the Flint Corvette clubs, Drago and the committee have grown and organized this event into one of, if not the largest all-Corvette event in Michigan; an impressive accomplishment in light of the hundreds of Corvettes that come from all over the world to cruise the legendary Woodward strip just sixty miles south the very same day. Both the Corvette Reunion committee and the Back to the Bricks committee impressively organized this huge event so there was few traffic back-ups which has been a complaint of pat events. There was plenty of parking for both those showing their cars and spectators.

The Checkered Flag Falls on the Corvette Reunion & Back to the Bricks Show

The Corvette Reunion, though a part of the Back to the Bricks show, is actually a separate event organized and managed within the larger car show. As a result there are some differences between the larger Bricks car show and the Corvette Reunion. Though there is no charge to simply show your car in either the Bricks or Reunion, however, in the Corvette show you can register and pay a fee to have your car judged in a competition. Awards are given in various categories from “Best in Show” to “Farthest Traveled” the trophies are mounted on Bricks commemorating the historic brick paved Saginaw Street, the main street in downtown Flint which is now historically protected.

The Corvette Reunion requires several streets in the downtown to be able to accommodate all the Corvettes that travel from as far away as California to be a part of the event. The National Corvette Museum is also on hand offering merchandise and information on the museum. Each year the event has grown by approximately a hundred Corvettes and this year was no exception.

The Checkered Flag Falls on the Corvette Reunion & Back to the Bricks Show

One of the hallmarks of the Reunion is the broad spectrum of Corvettes being displayed from award winning classic Corvettes to customized cars. The show has one of the largest assortment of “personalized” Corvettes in any show. Flint’s “TrendSetta Corvette Club” has an impressive representation of some of the finest “personalized” Corvettes that can be found anywhere. According to Anthony Bowling, president of the club and a co founder of the event, the outstanding “personalized” cars from his club have been invited to display their cars all over the country. The former president of the Rainbow Corvette Club, Bowling is also the founder of the appropriately named, Trendsetta Corvette Club. From the impressive workmanship and design in several of the club member’s cars, they are truly a trendsetting club. Anthony’s white Corvette with Lambo doors is an outstanding representation of the cars in the club.

The Checkered Flag Falls on the Corvette Reunion & Back to the Bricks Show

As most of you know, Corvettes at Carlisle takes place this weekend and the Corvette on the center stage will be Steve Stone’s 1963 triple black convertible one of the participants in this year’s Reunion. Just one of the things that sets Steve’s car apart is the over a half million miles he has put on the car since taking delivery of the car on February 27, 1963, four months after he ordered it, when he was just eighteen years old. The car has had four engine rebuilds/replacements, four replacement front end clips, due to accidents, and the interior has been redone twice. He added the side pipes and disc brakes in the 70’s and had the frame restored in the 80’s. The car has traveled all of the lower 48 states and 9 Canadian provinces and on long excursions he and his wife tow a small 5X8 utility trailer behind the packed sports car. Packing light is a requirement his wife has mastered especially for their once a year trip to the Boundary Waters, which means they take a 22-foot canoe along as well. Though he has owned the car its entire life he did put the car up for sale when he was drafted back in 1965. He thought he was going to end up in Viet Nam so he wanted to make sure that if anything happened to him he would not leave his parents stuck paying off the loan on the car which they had cosigned. However, the planets must have been aligned because he could not find a buyer, did not go to Nam and took that as an omen to keep the car. Now he said he’d never part with the car and couldn’t picture driving anything else. While showing me his picture and document album of the car, he expressed his feelings towards the well used Corvette, “I won’t take anything for it, not even if I were offered a new C7.”

Like other Corvette events, owners are more than willing to share their stories about their cars if asked. What makes this event different is the vast quantity of Corvettes and great stories. Like the beautiful 1956 and 1957 Corvettes owned by the Campbells, father and son. Or like Jerry and Janet Karyciak’s story about their NCRS Duntov Award winning 1962 Corvette. Jerry bought the 1962 convertible in 1978 when he was 18 years old. When he found the car it was hardly original. Among other things the car did not have the original engine in it since the seller said it was cheaper to put in a replacement engine than repair the original. But luckily the seller still had the original engine and sold it to Jerry along with the car. That began Jerry’s fourteen year quest to find the correct factory parts for the car. Finally after compiling the correct parts he was able to start his restoration in 1992 which lasted for three years. Now Jerry drives the car everywhere and said the only time it has ever been on a trailer was on a trip to California where he received the Duntov Award. He recently drove the C1 to Hampton, Virginia, for the NCRS convention. The beautiful Honduras Maroon coupe is an exemplary example of the last year of a first generation car.

It’s always exciting to hear a story about a “barn find,” especially a Corvette. Bruce Jackowski found his 1966 Sunfire Yellow convertible in a barn in Michigan in 2006. He is the fourth owner of the car which was delivered to the dealer in January 1966. Bruce discovered the car in a barn where it had been sitting for over fifteen years. To get the car running Bruce had to rebuild most of the mechanicals, drop the tank and clean it and replace several hoses and lines. He was surprised when he discovered in the same barn hidden from sight the original hard top for the car. When delivered originally the car had been painted Trophy Blue but had been repainted Sunfire Yellow several years before it had been parked in the barn. Bruce decided to keep the Sunfire Yellow paint as found, which is still in good condition.

Even Larry Courtney, organizer of the recently completed Corvettes On Woodward event which drew over 500 Corvettes on Wednesday August 14, found time in his busy schedule to take part in the Reunion. Larry, Michigan captain of the National Corvette Museum’s National Parade, was hard at it pitching information on the 2014 Corvette tour.

Throughout the event there was plenty of music and food available. Both the Bricks and Corvette Reunion shows ended at 6 PM but the action continued into the evening with parties and a 50’s themed sock hop.

If you are a Corvette owner, overall it was a great week to be in Michigan. From Larry Courtney’s Corvettes on Woodward, to weeknights along Woodward Avenue, to the Back to the Bricks – Corvette Reunion show there was never a lack of things to do. From all indications the Woodward Dream Cruise, the Back to the Bricks and the Corvette Reunion had larger turn outs of participants and spectators, were better organized and with more activities than ever before. The only recommendation I would have for you aside from being in Michigan next year for these events is to get plenty of rest the week before because from the moment the green flag drops on the Sunday before the Saturday event it becomes a fun-filled Corvette endurance event.

We all know that Corvettes draw attention wherever they go.

Just ask the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina.

“I have had people to stop me at stoplights and tell me that was the coolest DARE car they have ever seen,” Cpl. Phillip Goodyear says. “…They love the thought of taking that type of vehicle from a drug dealer.”

Goodyear is referring to the 2000 Corvette confiscated from a drug dealer that he recently started using in the department’s DARE program, or Drug Abuse Resistance Education, which targets about 1,500 fifth graders in the county’s 18 elementary schools with an anti-drug message each year.

“The message of DARE is to make wise choices, whether it relates to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gangs and friendships,” Davidson County Sheriff David Grice said. “We are hoping when they see the car, they’ll remember (the DARE message).”

Cpl. Goodyear has been using the Corvette for the past few weeks after it was outfitted with a siren and blue lights. He’ll soon be joined by his cohort, Deputy Hillary Pearce, in a 2004 BMW 325i that was likewise used by a drug dealer in illicit activities.

Goodyear has been teaching the DARE program since 2007 and believes he can see the benefits during his job as a baseball coach at East Davidson High Schools.

“They are still making the good choices,” Goodyear said. “There are some who I see are not making the good choices, but for the most part I have seen my kids making the right choices.”
