[PICS] The Corvettes of the 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise

The Woodward Dream Cruise is billed as the largest one-day car event in the world. Each year on the third Saturday in August about 1.5 million people and 40,000 or so collector cars descend on historic Woodward Avenue in metro Detroit. It’s the pinnacle of the annual automotive week of ecstasy we told you about a couple weeks ago.

The Woodward Dream Cruise began in 1995 as a fundraising event for a Ferndale, MI baseball field and has morphed into the world’s largest 1 day automotive event complete with corporate sponsors and strong representation from the Big Three automakers. The event takes place along a 16 mile stretch of America’s first highway to recreate years gone by when Woodward Avenue was Detroit’s unofficial automotive proving grounds and stop light drag races were the norm.

The cruise is officially a one day event, but eager cruisers hit the street days, even weeks, before that. If you’re looking to get out and actually drive, your best bet is to be on Woodward early, because by noon on the official cruise day as it’s usually a slow moving traffic jam any time after that. This year’s event was blessed with perfect weather all week long. We cruised last Wednesday for the Corvettes on Woodward food drive, last Friday night, and even got out early Saturday morning while the traffic was still light. We made the full loop from our Motor City HQ in Royal Oak, up to Pontiac, back down to the southern end in Ferndale, and finally back northward to Royal Oak again. The roundtrip adventure took about 2 hours total. After that, we set off on foot to explore the various displays alongside Woodward.

If you’ve never been to the Woodward Dream Cruise, you really need to place it on your must-attend list. You’ve never seen a car show as unique this. The best part is that it’s not a stationary car show. Of course all of the parking lots along Woodward are stuffed full of cars, but there’s also a rolling 16 mile long car show still going on right behind you. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Rare Corvette Racers Headed to the 2013 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Rare Corvette Racers Headed to the 2013 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

If you love historically significant Corvette racecars, it doesn’t get much better than the collection of six very rare cars that will be on display at the 2013 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Aug. 16-18.

We all know Chevy takes the lessons it learns from racing and transfers that knowledge to the production cars. To illustrate that point, each of the six classic racers will be shown with its street counterpart from the same timeframe.

Those six racers to be displayed include:

  • 1960 Cunningham Corvette No. 3, which took first in its class and eighth overall after the crew cooled off the overheating engine with dry ice from the catering tent.
  • 1967 Corvette Le Mans, piloted by the legendary Dick Guldstrand and Bob Bondurant at the 1967 Le Mans, where its 427 set a record speed of 171.5 mph on the Mulsanne Straight before engine failure.
  • 1968 Owens Corning Corvette, powered by an L88 engine and perhaps the most victorious Corvette ever with 22 consecutive SCCA A/Production wins over several years.
  • 1989 Corvette Challenge No. 3 Car, overall winner of that series in 1989 which pitted Corvette against Corvette because the SCCA banned them from Showroom Stock racing after the ’Vette dominated its competition so much.
  • 2001 Corvette C5R, built for Chevrolet Racing by Pratt & Miller Engineering and Fabrication with a 427/610 engine good for eight wins in 10 races that season.
  • 2011 Corvette C6R, also developed by Pratt & Miller and the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

[VIDEO] Corvettes and Standing Water Do Not Play Well Together

[VIDEO] Corvettes and Standing Water Do Not Play Well Together

Storms and low-riding Corvettes don’t always mix.

Just ask the driver of this C5 Corvette, who talked to a reporter from WREG-TV in Memphis, Tennessee last week about his misadventures following a major storm that swept through the area.

“I saw the water up under that viaduct,” Eugene Stephenson explained, “but I didn’t think it was that deep.”

He was just trying to get home to Whitehaven but didn’t make it past South Memphis before he stalled out in two feet of standing water under an overpass on Bellevue.

“It came halfway up the car,” Stephenson said.

That’s when the Corvette’s motor shut down, and he had to push the car to safety.

He told the reporter he was waiting on a tow truck when she came by.

Looking back on the situation, he told her, “It was pretty bad. It was pretty bad.”

He shouldn’t feel like the Lone Ranger, though. The reporter says tow truck companies told her they had gotten quite a few calls after torrential rains poured down on the city.

There probably isn’t a much sicker feeling for a Corvette owner than the one a Hampton, Va., man suffered Monday night.

Larry Phlegar had celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Corvette by buying a collector’s edition 2003 model, a yellow coupe that he had driven just 9,723 miles over the past decade.

Now he can only hope that lawmen are able to find his prized possession after a thief stole it Monday night.

“At first you think somebody has moved it,” Phlegar told WAVY-TV. “At first you think somebody has borrowed it. When I came out, walked around and realized it wasn’t on my property anymore, it was devastating.”

Phlegar, who lives off Big Bethel Road, has contacted police, but he’s afraid the super-low mileage Corvette he’s had for 10 years may never be found.

The culprit also tried to steal his ATV, but fortunately Larry thwarted that attempt since he had earlier taken the battery out and it wouldn’t start for the would-be thief.

If you happen to catch Phlegar’s yellow Corvette going down the road, call the Hampton Police Department or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

A medical helicopter was used to transport a West Milford, New Jersey Corvette driver to the hospital after he crashed his yellow 2003 coupe into a tree last Thursday morning.

Anthony Venturella, 57, was believed to be on his way to work at 5:42 a.m. when the one-car crash occurred on Route 23 South near the Kinnelon border.

Lt. John Matarese said Venturella was headed south on the highway when the car left the road and went into the median.

Venturella was left in serious condition after the accident and had to be extricated from the Corvette and taken to a landing zone at Kinnelon High School, where Hackensack Air 1 picked him up and carried him to Saint Joseph’s Trauma and Medical Center in Paterson.

The car suffered extensive damage, including the outer skin of the passenger door being ripped off and coming to rest a few feet from the vehicle.

West Milford police are hoping someone who witnessed the accident will come forward and tell what they saw to help explain why the accident occurred. Witnesses who were heading in either direction are asked to call the police at 973-728-2802.

The accident remains under investigation by the West Milford Police Crash Investigation Unit.

[PICS] Red C5 Corvette on D2FORGED FMS05 Wheels

Here’s another great photo gallery from our friends at D2FORGED showing their custom wheels on a C5 Corvette. Back in May we shared a C5 Convertible Widebody riding on D2FORGED CV2 colormatched wheels and now they’ve supplied us with pics of the red C5 Corvette which is sitting tight on a set of FMS05 Wheels.

The FMS lineup (which stands for Fixed Modular Spec) is directly targeted to owners who want to go the forged wheels route for their car but don’t want to spend a ton of money on them. The FMS05 wheels start at $4,200 for a set sized at 18″.

The C5 Corvette shown feature 20×9 front wheels and 20×11 rear wheels. The wheels have a Matte Black Center with a gloss black outer lip and a gloss red inner barrel. The wheels also featured Matte black fasteners and red D2 centercaps.

Check out these photos and then visit D2FORGED for more information.

[VIDEO] Corvette Battery Maintenance with GM Technician Paul Koerner

[VIDEO] Corvette Battery Maintenance with GM Technician Paul Koerner

If you’ve attended any of the major Corvette shows like Mid America Motorworks’ Corvette FunFest, Corvettes at Carlisle or the Corvette Museum’s annual Bash, you’ve probably seen GM World Class Certified Technician Paul Koerner helping Corvette owners by diagnosing issues they are having with their later model Corvettes.

Paul has recently joined forces with Mid America Motorworks to produce a series of videos to give Corvette owners tips and tricks for keeping their Corvettes running trouble-free. We recently watched the first video on Paul’s Facebook page, The Corvette Mechanic and wanted to share it with our readers.

The subject of Paul’s first video with Mid America has to do with proper battery maintenance as well as troubleshooting issues related to the battery including testing, using a battery charger and a charge maintainer. As the Corvette has a reputation for issues caused by low or improperly maintained batteries, this should be a 101 level class for all Corvette owners.

What’s nice about this collaboration for Corvette owners is that not only does Paul take us through some of the issues that owners might be faced with, Mid America offers a listing of the specific parts that Paul references so owners will know the exact part name and number that may be needed to complete a repair.

Most likely, by watching the video with Paul Koerner, you probably learned something about your Corvette that you didn’t know before. Catch the latest videos as they come out by visiting Paul’s facebook page, The Corvette Mechanic or subscribe to Mid America Motorworks on YouTube.
