[VIDEO] Corvette Collector Car Insurance Explained by NCM Insurance Agency's Adam Boca

CorvetteBlogger spoke with Adam Boca of the National Corvette Museum’s Insurance Agency at the 2013 Corvettes at Carlisle show. Adam talks about differences in agreed value vs stated value as well as what it takes to get a policy written.

Adam tells us that not all collector car insurance policies are the same. NCM Insurance uses an agreed value vs the other two methods, Stated and Actual Cash Value. And because the NCM knows Corvettes as well as they do, they can typically streamline the process of writing the policy.

This was important to me when I approached Adam earlier this year about insuring my classic Corvette. First, I asked for a quote for my 1966 Corvette which I got almost immediately via email. I told Adam the agreed value I wanted to insure it for and he say “we can do that!”. No appraisal was needed, so I faxed over my previous insurance policy’s docs page and within just a few hours my 1966 Corvette was covered for the year. I had a better insurance policy tailored for my needs for an agreed value and it came in at a lower annual cost than my previous policy.

Best of all, by using the NCM Insurance Agency, commissions from my policy went straight back to the NCM to support their mission.

Look, as Corvette owners we all need insurance. So why not choose the Corvette experts at the NCM Insurance Agency to insure your Corvette dream. Visit them on the web at www.ncminsurance.com or call them at 877-678-7626.

Adam and his merry gang of underwriters from the NCM Insurance Agency will also be at Mid America’s Corvette Funfest tomorrow and through the weekend so make sure you stop by and get a free quote. If you’re really serious, bring a copy of your current insurance policy and watch Adam work his magic to get you a better insurance policy at a most likely lower rate.

[VIDEO] Motor Trend Dyno’s the 2014 Corvette Stingray

[VIDEO] Motor Trend Dyno's the 2014 Corvette Stingray

How much horsepower will be the C7’s new V8 engine be able to produce on the dyno?

Well, Jessi Lang with The J-Turn web show for Motor Trend wanted to find out so she took a 2014 Corvette Stingray to the K&N facility.
With Robert “Pops” Calles, product tech with K&N, behind the wheel, the blue Z51 was taken to the limit on the dyno, literally.

“Dyno testing is one of the most widely accepted forms of performance measure in the auto industry,” Lang points out, “and while dynos are incredibly precise machines, the accuracy of the test depends on the operator’s ability to control a variety of variables. Now today, I’ve got the C7 and I want to know what this thing can really do. So to ensure I get the most accurate test possible, I’m meeting up with my friend Bert Heck from K&N Engineering.”

Basically, Calles and Heck put the car through two pulls to see what kind of numbers the C7 makes, and we think you’ll like what you hear.

“We start off in first gear, second gear, third gear, and this pull was a fourth-gear one,” Heck said. “Once we got the car in fourth gear, we brought the car up to about 2500 RPM. Then what we do is get there, get the car settled, and then go full throttle, then we take it all the way up to max RPM which was 6500 on this pull here.”

On the dyno chart, the Stingray made 402 horsepower the first try, then was allowed to cool down for a second attempt.

“What we do is we’ll reproduce the same thing as what we did on the first pull” to test for consistency, Heck says.
No problem there.

“The second pull was 403 horsepower, so this car is very, very consistent which is really, really cool,” he says. “You can tell that the torque is really flat so that’s also what performance guys want – a nice, flat torque curve. So very impressive.”

Jessi asks if they will do another test to get a top-speed for the Stingray.

As the motor revs up, the numbers climb rapidly to 91, 92, 100, 140, 142, 150, 156, 175, and finally with Jessi hollering “Go, go, go, go,” the ’Vette finally maxes out at…192 mph before quickly falling back to 190.

[VIDEO] Motor Trend Dyno's the 2014 Corvette Stingray

But it was actually an artificial limit set by the computer on the car, Heck points out.

“You can get in and mess with the computer and get higher miles per hour,” he says, “but off the showroom floor, this car is a 190 mph car.”

Of course, the dyno test didn’t take in account wind drag or other factors, he points out. “This is just a stagnant test, so if this was real world, would it make 190mph?” Heck asks. “Well, that’s where you have to do the real world test.”

We’re sure they could find plenty of people to tackle that chore.

Just in case those original horsepower numbers aren’t enough for you, by the way, Heck shows Jessi a prototype filter being developed just for the C7.

“Since this is kinda the first car we’ve seen,” Heck says, “this is a good opportunity for us to throw it in and see if it fits.”

“So if you could get an extra 10 horsepower out of this,” Jessi asks, “would that be an exciting number?”

“Ten horsepower would be a really good number. We’d be happy with something like that,” he replies.

The test proved to be a great one for the filter and the C7.

“We’ve achieved over 15 horsepower up to 20 horsepower gains,” Heck says after making a run. “Not bad for a prototype filter! It’s a good baseline. We’re pretty happy. It’s leading us in the right direction.”

So for all you C7 fans out there, if the factory numbers don’t satisfy you, be aware that there is even more performance waiting to roar out of the new Stingray engine!

On Saturday afternoon at the Mecum auction in Dallas, Lot #123 – a 1967 L88 Corvette Roadster from the Buddy Herin collection took center stage. After five minutes of auction banter, the documented 1-20 L88 Corvette Sting Ray became the highest selling Corvette to ever sell at auction with a gavel price of $3.2 million.

This Corvette spent much of its early life at the drag strip and has the time slips to prove it. The car was raced along the West Coast in the NHRA A/Sports class in 1968-69 before returing to stock form in 1970.

Buddy Herin bought the Corvette in 1998 and sent it to the Nabers Brothers in Houston for restoration. The Corvette claimed a regional NCRS Top Flight award in 1997 and participated in the 2008 Bloomington Gold L88 Invasion.

GM records show 20 L88’s sold to the public for the 1967 model year. Documentation for this L88 Sting Ray includes the all-important tank sticker, extensive owner history and old racing photos and time slips.

The Marlboro Maroon Corvette sports a black, mostly original interior and a matching black stinger on the hood. The 427/430hp L88 engine is bolted to a M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed and has a 4.11:1 rear end. Other options include heavy duty power brakes, factory side exhaust, and the F41 suspension.

Here’s the video from of the sale from Mecum Auctions:

With the $3.2 Million dollar sale, this L88 eclipses the $1.6 million spent for the 1963 Corvette “Rondine” Coupe built by Pininfarina which sold at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction in 2008.

[VIDEO] 2014 Corvette Stingray Testing at Nurburgring

[VIDEO] 2014 Corvette Stingray Testing at Nurburgring

The internet’s abuzz tonight after a video has surfaced showing a Laguna Blue 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 testing on the famous Nurburgring. The Corvette is shown making some fast runs through several turns with a helmeted driver and a co-pilot. Could it be that GM Engineers are doing some testing in Germany?

At Corvettes at Carlisle, Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter said that the C7 Corvette Stingray would be headed to Germany for its high speed test and then most likely it would visit the Nurburgring. We just didn’t realize that it would be happening this soon.

Watch how well the Stingray handles these curves on the track and there’s a straight of track where the Stingray does a high speed fly-by.

Tadge said if they go to Nurburgring, they may “try a high speed run” but I think we know them well enough to know that they wouldn’t be taking the Stingray to Nurburgring without doing one as it validates everything they’ve worked on for the last four years. Whether or not it becomes public depends on how well it goes and if they think they can improve with more testing.

At the 2012 NCM Bash, test driver Jim Mero participated in a one hour seminar about testing the Corvette ZR1 at Nurburgring and all the work and data the “track ratz” collected prior to making the famous 7:19.63 lap in 2011. It’s worth another look know that know the C7 Stingray is there.

Stay tuned as I’m sure there will be more coming out about the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s first foray onto the ‘ring.

Update – Second video added. Also shows Camaro Z/28

At the Corvette Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the National Corvette Museum for the class of 2013, Wil Cooksey, Werner Meier and Johnny O’Connell, each had a video tribute shown with interviews, testimonials and archival footage showcasing their contributions to the Corvette Brand. Each inductee came to the Hall of Fame following a different path but their passion for Corvettes are shared as the videos show.

So if you couldn’t make it to Bowling Green for the ceremony, we have the three videos so you can get know the Class of 2013 a little better.

2013 Corvette Hall of Fame Inductee Wil Cooksey

Wilmer Cooksey Jr. served as Corvette Plant Manager from February of 1993 until his retirement in March 2008. As the first African-American to earn the position and the man who held it the longest, he brought a life-long love of Corvette to the job. Believing in the phrase that “none of us are as smart as all of us,” he worked with the United Auto Workers Union and listened to customers to make the Corvette exceed the expectations of all who dreamed of having one someday.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1942 Wil accomplished much in his life. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a Masters degree in industrial engineering. He went to Officers Candidate School as well and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts. He is the winner of a number of honors including “Black Engineer of the Year–President’s Award”, “Achiever of the Year”, “Black Achiever in Industry” and now takes his place in the Corvette Hall of Fame.

2013 Corvette Hall of Fame Inductee Werner Meier

Werner Meier’s very first car was a new Corvette. His love for the car would eventually guide the direction of his life taking him from his family’s garage where he would work on cars with his friends, to one day starting Masterworks Automotive Services. Now regarded as one of the best in the world at restoration, Werner has worked on over 100 Corvettes, including cars built for Harley Earl, Bill Mitchell and others. Cars from his collection have been put on display at the National Corvette Museum, the Gilmore Car Museum, the Lingenfelter Collection and even the GM Heritage Center. His work and dedication to the hobby have earned him a place in the Inaugural Bloomington Gold Corvette Hall of Fame.

As committed to the future of Corvette as he is to its past, Werner’s efforts through car shows and with the Boy Scouts of America have inspired future generations to make their first car a Corvette too. For his devotion, passion, and dedication to the Corvette lifestyle, we welcome Werner Meier into the Corvette Hall of Fame.

2013 Corvette Hall of Fame Inductee Johnny O’Connell

To many, race car driver Johnny O’Connell embodies what Corvette Racing is all about. Behind the wheel he is determined, focused, fiercely competitive, relentless and obsessed with victory. Outside of the car though, he is approachable, fun, engaging, and always ready to talk with fans about what makes the Corvette so great. He should know as his accomplishments include four wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans along with being the overall winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2001. He is Sebring’s all-time winner with one overall victory and eight class titles along with being a three time ALMS Champion with 38 ALMS wins. After Corvette his success in racing continued with Cadillac Racing in the World Challenge Championship. While driving for them, he also serves as a popular commentator for ESPN, and at the same time was named Vice President of Global Operations at the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.

“I love driving fast, and I love people.” Johnny says. “In my time with Corvette, I was able to do what I love for people I care about.”

Edmunds Compares 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray Z51 vs. 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition

Edmunds Compares 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray Z51 vs. 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition

Chalk up another victim for the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

Edmunds.com recently pitted Chevy’s latest generation of America’s Sports Car against the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition.

Based on numbers alone, the Corvette shouldn’t have won this shootout of macho sports cars. For instance, the Stingray was giving up 85 horsepower to the GT-R, and the Nissan was priced nearly $50,000 higher than the Corvette.

In the end, though, it didn’t matter as Edmunds gave the nod to the Stingray.

“We expected this one to be close. It wasn’t,” they wrote.

“Though it smoked the Corvette in acceleration and in the slalom and offers a better interior, it didn’t matter if we were at the track, in a canyon or just driving home; the GT-R simply isn’t as exciting as the ‘Vette.”

Edmunds especially praised the Stingray’s steering, calling it “outstanding: quick and hyper-pointy with solid feel and precision.” They also said it wasn’t just “Corvette good” or “electric steering good,” – “it’s no-qualifier exemplary.”

The Z51′s Magnetic Selective Ride Control and its multiple drive modes also impressed Edmunds.

“Select Touring mode and the C7 rides with all the confidence and composure of a Cadillac,” Edmunds writes. “Flick the knob over to Track and it’s a tail-happy terrier without a millimeter of slack. You won’t find that flexibility in the GT-R.”

Without the first consumer-driven car on the road, the Stingray has already taken over the realm once occupied by the GT-R, according to Edmunds.

“When the Nissan GT-R first showed up on the scene, it occupied a unique position. Nothing offered similar performance, technology, refinement and badassery at the GT-R’s price. Not even close. That domain now belongs to the Stingray. Nothing offers this much refinement, power, performance, tech and driver involvement at this price.”

Perhaps most telling – and satisfying to Corvette fans – is Edmunds’ supposition that GT-R doesn’t lose the challenge to the Corvette because it’s not $47,020 better than the Stingray.

“It loses because it’s not better than the Corvette, period,” Edmunds says.

[VIDEO] Justin Bell Drives the 2014 Corvette Stingray at Laguna Seca

Count Justin Bell of “The World’s Fastest Car Show” on EBAY Motors among the biggest fans of the new Corvette Stingray.

After taking a red 2014 model for “quite a few” laps around the famous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca race track in California, Bell makes no bones about his opinion of the car.

“If I sound a bit overenthusiastic, I make no apologies because this truly is an outstanding performance car,” Bell says afterwards.

He is particularly impressed with the way Chevy has carried over the aerodynamic lessons learned on the race track to the production Stingray, especially the rear air diffusers that give the car good mid-corner and high-speed balance, “which you can feel,” he says.

Overall, while past Corvettes have been somewhat polarizing, if not iconic, according to Bell, he’s always felt the car was a great value proposition.

The C7 takes it to an entirely new level, though.

“For the money, I just don’t think you can beat” the 2014 Corvette, Bell says.

“Performance, looks, sexiness,” he says. “This is definitely a car that will be a hit.”

While the C7 wasn’t available for Motor Trend’s Best Driver’s Car contest this year, based on Bell’s opinion, the Stingray will give Porsche a definite run for its money next year on the same track where the Germans have won two years running.

[ACCIDENT] Stolen C4 Corvette Goes Airborne and Hits a House in Miami

[ACCIDENT] Stolen C4 Corvette Goes Airborne and Hits a House in Miami

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… Corvette?

That’s one way to describe a high-speed chase involving a stolen C4 Corvette that left the ground before slamming into the wall of a house in Miami, Fla., late Tuesday night.

Richard Campbell said his home was already being foreclosed on, and now he’s not sure if it’s worth anything after being hit by the Corvette. He plans to move into an apartment with his dog, just glad to be alive.

“I was very fortunate because I do believe in the supernatural spirit and he allowed me to go back there and watch a movie instead of being in the kitchen,” Campbell said.

At first, after hearing the noise of the impact, Campbell was afraid the house was being swallowed by a sinkhole but soon realized a car had rammed into his house instead. In fact, a reporter for Miami’s NBC6 South Florida pointed out car parts still littering the ground outside the home, and his camera showed a headlight resting on the floor inside. Campbell said he saw someone in the car after the crash, but miraculously whoever was inside apparently survived and remains on the loose.

The pursuit started in Opa-locka when undercover officers spotted the stolen car near Northwest 15th Avenue and 62nd Street. Eventually, the Corvette bounced its way over railroad tracks and went airborne before striking the house near Northwest 17th Avenue and 74th Street.

“This vehicle became airborne as it went over a little hill, the railroad tracks, and once it became airborne, coming back on to the ground, it lost total control and started spinning out of control,” Miami Police spokesman Det. Willie Moreno said.

“This is amazing that the occupants inside this vehicle were able to flee on foot, and apparently didn’t receive any serious injuries,” Moreno said.

Police are looking for the occupant or occupants of the car and are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
