[VIDEO] C2 Corvette Grand Sport Replica Preps for East African Rally

Here’s something you don’t see every day – a Corvette Grand Sport (1960s variety) – sloshing its way along muddy roads in the wilds of Africa.

Cars like this are usually seen on a race track competing in motorsport, but this one has been modified by Tachyon Motorsport to be driven by Michiel Campagne and Mike van Thiel on Nov. 29 in Kenya during the East-African Safari Rally, which bills itself as “The World’s Greatest Rally.”

Those side exhausts on the Grand Sport sound just as great in the wilds of Africa as they do on any track in the United States, though. Indeed, the Corvette in this video seems to be enjoying its newfound life playing in the dirt as it roars past bushes lining the road and giant bales of hay lying in fields.

By the end of the video, a closeup of the Grand Sport emblem shows it covered with dirt and water spots.

According to information we found on Afroautos, which calls itself “an auto site for Africa by Africans,” the event is “not an easy affair for the drivers and their navigators. The map involves rough terrain and roads that would otherwise be difficult to drive on even with modern vehicles. But the classic machines machines drivers use in this rally are designed to handle more than just a difficult route. The teams have installed parts that will tolerate the jumps, sharp turns, rocky roads, and the muddy sections.”

Thanks to the modifications already made, the Grand Sport appears to be having no problem making it through the challenging course.

The rally is not just an event “involving new machines with modern technology under the hood and flashy gadgets on the dashboard – no! It is a rally involving classic vehicles that turned heads in their days. They say old is gold and if the oldies are your love and passion, then the Kenya Airways will be more than just an event to you,” Afroautos says.

The African website notes that the rally is all about “tolerance, endurance and skill.” To make it through the course, the participants require a high level of concentration and driving skills, the site says, and “as for the spectators, they can sit, relax, and wait for the main event because this year it is more action packed and the number of participants is expected to be higher.”

Porsches and Fords are the dominant vehicles based on the entry list so far, according to Afroautos, but maybe the Corvette Grand Sport can live up to the current Chevy slogan to “find new roads” and come out on top.

[VIDEO] C5 Corvette Pulled From a New Orleans Bayou

Down in the Bayou definitely takes on a new meaning for this Corvette.

New Orleans Police pulled the black C5 hardtop (possibly a 1999 or 2000 model) out of Bayou St. John early Wednesday morning.

WVUE Channel 8 in New Orleans showed live video of the Corvette – minus at least its left front fender and rear bumper, with the left rear tire dangling – being pulled out of the water about 7:45 a.m. today.

Police found no one in the car, but in a noon statement said they have made contact with the driver, though they did not release his name. They did say he was alone in the Corvette.

Witnesses reported seeing a man climb out of the water shortly after the accident, which happened around 4 a.m. Recovery efforts began at 5:30 a.m., and the northbound lanes of Wisner Boulevard between Esplanade and Desaix were closed until 8:55 a.m.

NOPD is continuing its investigation and won’t say how or why the car made its way into the water.

[VIDEO] Jay Leno and Rick Hendrick Impressed After Driving the 2014 Corvette Stingray

[VIDEO] Jay Leno and Rick Hendrick Impressed After Driving the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Count talk-show host Jay Leno and racing icon Rick Hendrick among the growing legion of fans of the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

The two men got a first-hand look at the Stingray this month during an appearance in Marina, Calif., and came away mightily impressed.

“I think it’s the coolest Corvette that I’ve ever looked at,” said Hendrick, who plunked down more than $2 million (going to charity) to have the privilege of buying the first Stingray coupe and convertible.

“It just grabs you,” he said. “When I saw it, you know, I just thought immediately the first thing that came to mind, this is a Ferrari killer! It’s a great day for Chevrolet and it’s a great day for Corvette.”

Leno, meanwhile, is no stranger to Corvettes, pointing out to reporters that when he got his first Z06 in 2002, it was the most powerful Corvette with 405 horsepower.

“Now the standard Corvette (Stingray) is more powerful than the most powerful Corvette just 10 years ago,” Leno said, excited to get behind the wheel. “I’ve been a Corvette guy for a long time. I’ve got a ZR1, I’ve got a lot of Corvettes, and I’m just anxious to see what the new platform is like.”

Leno had the honor of climbing behind a dark gray Stingray and leading a parade of classic Corvettes.

“Oh yeah, it’s a terrific car, an amazing car,” he said after climbing out, “especially for the value. It’s an amazing car for the money.”

Ed Welburn, VP of Global Design for GM, posed for photos with Leno and Hendrick and admits that there may be some other great cars with incredible capability “that come somewhat close to this, but they don’t have the emotion, they don’t have the passion” of the new Corvette.

“I’m driving one now, and everywhere I go, people – I don’t care who they are, what their background is, what they are personally driving – they just get excited when they see the car.”

[VIDEO] Rossi 66 at the 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise

Via CorvetteVideos.TV

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Rossi 66 sighting, but here is a Pearl White Rossi 66 cruising Woodward Blvd in Detroit during August 2013′s DreamCruise.

Although the concept for the Rossi appeared first back in 2008, it took another two years for an actual car to be built. We believe this is the same Rossi 66 (or SixtySix) that made its debut at the EyesOn Design benefit in Detroit during the summer of 2010.

[VIDEO] Autocrossing the 2014 Corvette Stingray

[VIDEO] Autocrossing the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Last week at the C7 Corvette Stingray Media Drive event in Monterey, Chevy had an autocross course set up on a concrete tarmac just behind the airplane hanger where the entire event was staged. Three Corvettes, all 7-speed Z51 cars, were on the track. I chose the Torch Red Stingray (because everyone knows that red Corvettes are the fastest).

The autocross experience came after we had already completed the three hour road tour, so I was feeling really confident going to the track. The new Stingray inspires to you to be a better driver.

Chevrolet provided a driving instructor who gave tips as I made the first couple of laps around the course. After my second lap, I was more agressive and the Corvette kept responding positively.

The seats were amazing and held me in place through the various turns. Sometimes it felt as if I was melting into them, enveloped by the new thicker bolsters.

The handling of the new Corvette was fantastic. In Race mode, the steering is the stiffest (and most precise) and the exhaust sounds great. On the largest turn in the middle of the track, I had the gas peddle floored. I could hear the tires starting to squeal in protest but still holding strong through the turn. I realized then how much I loved the so-called “nanny controls” that kept me from making a complete mess of the cones on the track.

In the video, I’m driving the Red Stingray in the first three laps and then the instructor does the best series in the fourth and final lap.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray is a beautifully designed sports car with advanced technological underpinnings that is as much at home on the track as it is on the street. The more you ask of the new Stingray, the more she gives back in kind.

I can see why people really love autocrossing. Especially when it’s the 2014 Corvette Stingray providing the thrills!
