The annual kickoff to the 500 Festival was held today at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. Despite the soggy weather, a contingent of 2009 Festival Corvette convertibles made their appearance on the Circle. For the first time in five years Corvette will not be handling pace car duties. Only 500 Corvette ZHZ were ever made for the Hertz car rental company. Now the fleet is down one more after a Corvette rental driver sped out of control within a Philadelphia neighborhood, hitting 8 parked cars along the street curve. The crash occurred Wednesday, April 8th just before 4:00am.

And who might this genius driver be? Well, we don’t know. That individual had already fled the scene before neighbors, police and paramedics even arrived. Injury from the crash must have occurred after blood was found on the driver-side’s airbag.

This is the third Corvette ZHZ from the Hertz fleet to be totaled within an accident. Hopefully the third, and last!  Click here to see our previous coverage of a similar event.  Also, check out the video after the jump.

We’ve always known TV host Jay Leno was into Corvettes, but how cool is it that he invited Alex and Greg from the SmokinVette.com Corvette Forum to bring their Corvettes down to his Garage for a little show and tell. Both these Corvettes are highly modified and Jay seemed to be extremely interested in Greg’s rear mounted turbo setup. After the show and tell, Jay takes the Corvettes for a ride. [More]

Steve Wesoloski, GM Road Race Group Manager addressed a group of car enthusiasts at the 12 Hours of Sebring’s Corvette Corral. He clued the crowd in about the future 2009 season of Corvette Racing.

He also stressed the importance of tying the technology of racing back into production, and ultimately marketing. This methodology is just what GM incorporates into their racing success.

Nevertheless, “racing sells cars”. And the more car sales made, the better the automotive industry is within our economy. Right?
