[VIDEO] Corvette Racing's Doug Fehan on the C7.Rs Reveal at NAIAS

When the all-new C7.R Corvette race car was revealed at the North American International Auto Show last Monday, a small contingent of personnel from Corvette Racing and Pratt and Miller were on hand to witness the event.

We caught up with Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing’s Program Manager, on the show floor and spoke with him about the new race car and the inaugural race of the TUDOR United Sportscar Championship at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

It’s been nearly a year since we last talked with Doug and it’s always refreshing to hear what the good Dr. has to say.

We start the video with a quick look at the new C7.R and then we jump right into the interview by asking him if it felt like Christmas. Fehan responded “It’s almost like Christmas everyday when your working at Corvette but today was an especially proud day for all of us, not only on the race team but on the production side as well, winning the North American Car of the Year Award at the Detroit Auto Show was an amazing feat.”

One of the topics we were interested in hearing from Dr. Fehan was about the technological transfer between the race and street cars. This was a special moment though as the Corvette Z06 and C7.R were developed in tandem. At least that’s what we thought. Doug straightens us out by talking about what was learned on C6 and then transferring that technology and knowledge to the C7 program.

We were especially interested in how the C7.R would be able to take advantage of some of its new capabilities. Direct Injection is now on the production Corvettes and that means the race team has it on the returning 5.5 liter V8 race engines. Doug says the new DI should eliminate the need for one fuel stop at Le Mans. And if you’ve follow the Corvettes at Le Mans where the action in GT is always super tight and the difference between winning and second place can be just a few minutes, you’ll realize how big of an impact this could make.

Finally we talk about taking the new car the grueling 24 Hours of Daytona and Doug fills us in on the two new endurance drivers that will come on board in 2014: Ryan Briscoe (#3 C7.R) and Robin Liddell (#4 C7.R).

Here’s our interview with Doug Fehan from the floor of NAIAS in Detroit last week:

The new Corvette Racing C7.Rs will take the track for the first campaign at the 24 Hours of Daytona this Saturday. Follow CorvetteBlogger.com as well be posting updates from the race throughout the weekend.

[VIDEO] Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter Answers Our Questions about the 2015 Corvette Z06

[VIDEO] Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter Answers Our Questions about the 2015 Corvette Z06

At the 2014 North American International Auto Show, an informal conversation with Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter turned into a 15 minute Q&A session. Quickly flipping on the camera, we caught a lot of great tidbits about some of the technology behind the all new 2015 Corvette Z06.

When the video opens, we were talking with Tadge about the adjustable spoiler on the back. Now, you’ve probably seen the adjustable bolts that are attached to the wickerbill that allows the clear partition to move up and down, but we learned that the whole spoiler itself has the ability to be rotated to get the desired driving experience. When the camera is turned on, Tadge was telling us about how it was rotated a little to much for driving engineer Jim Mero who asked if someone was trying to kill him. Good times!!

Other things we asked about was the new eight-speed automatic, what the standard options are on the Z06 (all the good stuff is standard), and where the heck is that Stingray Nurburgring video!

Again we thank Tadge for taking the time and talking shop with us. We’ll probably have a few more questions for you next time we meet up!

[VIDEO] 2014 Corvette Stingray Named North American Car of the Year

Here is the video from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday when the Corvette Stingray was named the 2014 North American Car of the Year. CorvetteBlogger spoke to members of the Corvette Team following the awards ceremony for their reactions.

Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter accepted the award on behalf of the team. After the ceremony, we heard comments from Tadge. We also spoke with Corvette Assembly Plant Dave Tatman, Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles and Designers Kirk Bennion and Ryan Vaughan.

The award for North American Car of the Year is voted on by automotive journalists who start with a large selection of cars and then they are widdled down to 25, and then eventually to the top 3. Also in competition for the award was the 2014 Cadillac CTS and the 2014 Mazda 3.

Congratulations again to the Corvette Team for a job well done!

[VIDEO] Hennessey Corvette Stingray Breaks 200 MPH on Texas Toll Road

[VIDEO] Hennessey Corvette Stingray Breaks 200 MPH on Texas Toll Road

A boost from Hennessey Performance proved to be enough for a 2014 Corvette Stingray to crack the 200mph barrier for the first time on Dec. 11.

The Stingray had been upgraded with a Hennessey HPE600 system that boosts the car’s horsepower to 600 from the factory 460, as well as a Nitrous Express 100-hp nitrous oxide system.

Company founder John Hennessey put the pedal to the metal for the record-breaking performance that was held on a closed section of the newly completed segment E of Texas State Highway 99.

It was a great way to break in the road, which connects Interstate 10 with Highway 290 and will officially open to the public on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Hennessey was able to make the run, thanks to the cooperation of the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers.

Those troopers used their radar to confirm that the Hennessey Stingray did indeed reach 200.6 mph, a mark also verified by the VBox GPS-based data acquisition system.
After the drive, Hennessey praised the Corvette’s performance.

“The road is perfectly smooth, and the Corvette was very stable and easy to drive at 200 mph,” he said. “I’d put the Texas highway system up against any other highway in the world, including the German Autobahn. Our roads have proven to be smooth and safe at speeds well above 200 mph.”

Hennessey was quick to point out that “under normal driving situations, drivers should observe speed limits that have been determined to be safe for travel on the road.”

Of course, the factory Stingray is already one of the fastest cars on the planet, with a top speed of 180mph, but the Hennessey additions of long-tube headers, ported factory cylinder heads, high-flow cats, HPE camshaft and HPE tune – plus the nitrous system and improved aerodynamics – proved to be enough for the Corvette to break the hallowed 200mph ground.

If you don’t want to bother with nitrous, Hennessey says its soon-to-be-released HPE700 system can break 200 mph without resorting to that. Installed price for that package is $22,500.

[VIDEO] Instructor Brutally Drives His 2014 Corvette Stingray at Sebring

[VIDEO] Driving Instructor Brutally Drives His 2014 Corvette Stingray at Sebring

While attending an open track session at Sebring International Raceway on Saturday, I had the opportunity to ride with Larry who was one of the instructors for Chin Motorsports, the organization which hosted the event. Larry was very popular this weekend as he was driving an Arctic White 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 Coupe.

Larry’s previous Corvette was a C6 Corvette Z06 which had participated in over 100 track events. Larry says of all the Corvette Stingray Z51s built, hardly any of the owners will really “drive” the car to its limits on the track, which he thought was “just a shame” since it’s on the track where the 7th generation Corvette really shows its true high performance nature.

Larry drove his Corvette hard, diving into corners and allowing that 465 lb-ft torque from the LT1 to power down the straights. The Corvette had nearly 5,000 miles on the odometer and still has its stock Michelin tires and brakes. The Corvette was set up in the Sport driving mode with traction control off and our speeds reached upwards of 140 mph on the long back stretch before turn 17.

Things did get a bit interesting during the third lap around the track when your’s truly was blackflagged for “holding my arm out the window and taking pictures with a handheld camera” but you’ll see in the video that it never happened. We came into the pits and Larry diplomatically suggested to the track official that if I gave her my GoPro to hold, could we do another another lap and she agreed. Nice save, Larry!

The event by Chin Motorsports is a great way to get your Corvette on the track to experience its true performance. Check out their 2014 Schedule as they drive on tracks all across the country.

All in all, the the C7 Corvette Stingray is an incredible machine. The Active Rev Matching was really incredible and proved its full worth on the track. A big thanks again to Larry for the letting me experience a great car being driven on a racetrack by a fantastic driver!
