Sometimes we forget just how unpredictable and dangerous racing can be.

Take, for example, this Corvette C6 ZR1 that was involved in a pitlane fire during the penultimate round of the FIA World Endurance Championship over the weekend.

This Youtube video shows a lot of mad scrambling in the pits as the fire unexpectedly breaks out in the fuel rig during the Six Hours of Shanghai in the LMGTE (European Le Mans Series) Am category.
It was a tough break for the No. 50 Larbre Competition Corvette that looked at one point to be a challenger for a podium finish, but the fire burned up those hopes.

Fortunately, two mechanics in the middle of the terrifying flames escaped injury, thanks to their fire suits and equipment required in the FIA WEC as well as the fast-thinking crews of their competitors nearby.

Click here to see a larger version of this Corvette pit stop that goes up in flames.

In the first three hours of the race, it looked like the No. 95 Aston Martin Vantage V8 of the Danish trio Tiiim-Nygaard-Poulsen was going to cruise to victory. An electrical problem, however, stopped the car in the fourth hour, and the No. 81 8Star Motorsports Ferrari 458 Italia pulled ahead on the way to ultimate victory ahead of the No. 76 IMSA Matmut Porsche of Raymond Narac, Jean-Karl Vernay, and Markus Palttala and the No. 96 Aston Martin Vantage of Jamie Campbell-Walter, Stuart Hall, and Jonathan Adam.

[VIDEO] SEMA 2013: The Corvette Stingray Pacific Concept

[SEMA 2013] The Corvette Stingray Pacific Concept

The third concept Corvette shown by Chevrolet last week at SEMA was the Corvette Stingray Pacific Concept. The Pacific is the bookend to the Grand Turismo and Atlantic concepts we’ve already shown you, and its styling was drawn from the west coast’s unique culture of speed and style.

The track-inspired Corvette Stingray Pacific wears Torch Red paint on the exterior. That bright red paint is set off by a carbon fiber hood and roof panel. The 19 inch front and 20 inch rear wheels are satin black with red accent stripes. Down low there is a satin-black front splitter as well as rocker extensions. The Pacific also sports a rear spoiler covered in Carbon Flash Metallic paint and as well as corresponding Carbon Flash graphics treatment.

The carbon fiber theme carries over to the interior with a snazzy carbon fiber trim kit. Other performance inspired features include Competition Sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel. All that performance and style rides on the extremely popular Z51 performance package.

Like all Z51′s, the mighty LT1 engine gets the dry-sump oiling system. The cooling and braking systems are upgraded and there’s the electronic limited-slip differential mounted out back. The LT1′s 460hp gets to the rear wheels via a 7-speed manual transmission.

Best of all, just like the Atlantic concept, most of the accessories on the Pacific are available for owners to purchase and add to their own Corvettes.

Enjoy our look at the Corvette Stingray Pacific Concept below.

Great job and congratulations to all at Corvette Racing for a great season!

The team will open the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship with the Corvette C7.R race car at the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 25-26th.

[VIDEO] SEMA 2013: The Corvette Stingray Convertible Atlantic Concept

[VIDEO] SEMA 2013: The Corvette Stingray Convertible Atlantic Concept

Chevrolet this week showed 2 other concept Corvette Stingrays at SEMA in Las Vegas. In addition to the Gran Turismo Corvette Stingray Concept we showed you Tuesday, they also showed off the Atlantic and Pacific concepts as well. The cars are intended to represent the differences styling between the left and right coasts of the U.S. We’ll take a look at the Pacific concept a little later, but for now click past the jump to check out our photo gallery and video walkaround of the Corvette Stingray Atlantic concept.

The Blade Silver 2014 convertible is styled after a private jet. Outside the C7 sports a Carbon Flash Metallic front splitter, rockers, rear diffuser, and rear license plate holder. The headlamp buckets and hood accents are painted Fusion Gray. Chrome five-spoke wheels (19′s in the front and 20′s in the rear) with new Stingray script center caps sit at all 4 corners of this C7. Other exterior features include an under-hood liner with the Stingray logo, molded splash guards, and a nifty glass windscreen behind the seats.

The Atlantic’s interior is swathed in suede and includes custom luggage, premium carpet floor mats, custom sill plates, and a very cool embroidered center armrest with the new Stingray logo.

Motivation for the Atlantic concept comes from a stock LT1 engine which is mated to the 6-speed automatic transmission which is perfect for a long cruise alongside the Atlantic Ocean.

We’ll take a closer look at the Pacific concept shortly, but in the meantime enjoy our Corvette Stingray Atlantic photo gallery below.

Hennessey Offers Horsepower Boost for the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Hennessey Offers Horsepower Boost for the 2014 Corvette Stingray

Not satisfied with the 455 horsepower on the standard 2014 Corvette Stingray?

Then you might want to talk to the folks at Hennessey Performance, who are offering two performance upgrades for the new C7.

The Hennessey Performance C7 Corvette Stingray HPE500, appropriately enough, raises the horsepower to 500, thanks to a new computer calibration and an upgraded exhaust system with steel long-tube headers, high-flow cats, and midpipes. Hennessey is making only 500 of these units, with a price of $4,995 installed.

You can up that horsepower figure to 600 by opting for the HPE600 that requires 93-octane premium gas and uses a special hydraulic roller camshaft, along with porting and polishing of the factory cylinder heads, to add another 140-hp to the stock motor. Cost of this package is $10,950 installed.

It’s not all about the engine, though. The HPE cars look tougher, too, with Hennessey H10 forged monoblock wheels that cut 19 pounds off the unsprung weight, a special Carbon Aero body kit with a deep front splitter, a notched rear wing, and carbon-fiber door sills.

You also get a 3-year/36,000-mile powertrain warranty from Hennessey Performance.

And, if that’s still not enough performance for you, word is that Hennessey is working on supercharger and twin-turbo systems that crank out 1,000-hp.

[VIDEO] Edmunds Takes Their Long Term C7 Corvette Stingray to the Track

[VIDEO] Edmunds Takes their Long Term C7 Corvette Stingray to the Track

What will it be like living with a Stingray for months, way past the honeymoon period?

In this YouTube video, Edmunds editors Mike Monticello and Chris Walton offer a sneak preview of their long-term test of a 2014 Lime Rock Green Corvette Stingray that they’ll be keeping a close eye on for the next several months.

Balance is the word that keeps coming up in their early description of the C7, especially as it goes around the skidpad. Monticello compares the new Corvette favorably with a Porsche 911 when it comes to going back and forth between understeer and oversteer.

“This is right out of the box base Corvette with a handling package, and it’s making crazy numbers,” Walton says. He says he can’t even imagine what kind of performance Chevy will wring out of the big-tire Corvettes that are on the way (Z06 and ZR1).

A lot of people are wondering how the C7 compares to the C6, Monticello noted. It’s more of a complete car, a balanced car, he says.

“Where we noticed the big difference really was in the handling,” Monticello says.

The C7 weighs 80 pounds more than its predecessor, “but it’s how it manages the extra weight” that makes the difference, Walton says. “It’s like it doesn’t even exist. The car just feels tighter, smaller, more complete, much pointier I guess is a word that I would use, that I use a lot. When you turn the wheel, it goes right where you point it, right now.”

The Edmunds staff is “pretty thrilled and full of anticipation for the next year with this Corvette,” he concluded, and their preliminary testing at the track proved that this next generation is a real sports car.

[VIDEO] Car Wash Owner Chases Cop Shooter in a C5 Corvette

[VIDEO] Car Wash Owner Pursuits Cop Shooter in a C5 Corvette

Some folks might have left the police work to the professionals.

But not the owner of an Albuquerque car wash, who risked life and limb in his souped-up 2003 Corvette last Saturday to chase a bad guy who had shot police officer Matthew Hannum in the leg and then stole his cop car with the emergency lights flashing.

Understandably, the chaser prefers to remain anonymous after his daring feat but he did talk to a reporter about his decision to chase the suspect, appropriately named Christopher Chase.

“I mean poor guy got shot and he was hurt. I wanted to do all I can to go there and help him,” the Good Samaritan said of officer Hannum.

“When (the suspect) got in the police unit and took off I wasn’t going to let the individual get away especially when no one else was around,” he said.

Interestingly, during the chase, the man used his cellphone to call 911 and was told to back off.

“(The 911 operator) kept on telling me to pull over and stop and this and that. That I’m breaking the law,” he said.

But our hero said he has family and friends in the Albuquerque Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office, “so I’m not going to allow an individual like that to get away and have those individuals suffer for the rest of their lives,” he said.

That means he didn’t take the suggestions of the 911 operator when the chase suddenly turned from low-speed (40 mph or below) into high-speed mode of more than 100 mph, especially not after Chase allegedly stopped in the middle of an intersection to fire more shots at a police cruiser and then got back in the stolen cop car.

The Chase chaser just kept on going to keep a close eye on the suspect until Albuquerque Police were able to catch up with him.
